(Another) trip review

We just did a 1000 mile (1600 tariffed unit) trip for a family vacation with our brand new 2026 SX hybrid. We didn't have a 1000km on it before leaving. We were 6, me, my girlfriend and our 4 kids + luggage.

First I did manually measure the fuel efficiency for the Eco and Smart mode. My cruise control was set to 117 km/h for the entire trip.

Eco mode: 7.2l/100km. The computer was showing 7.3.

Smart mode: 8.2l/100km. The computer was showing 7.3.

Why does the Smart mode seem less efficient? I don't know, maybe I should read the manual 🙂.

Both were 90-95% highway, the rest city or traffic.

Here are the cons and pros

Cons

- The car can't remember my driving settings (drive mode, brake Regen level)

- Sometimes, after starting the car, it takes a long time before the driver profile selection shows up and you can confirm. As long as 10-15 seconds. By default it's the last profile selected, but if you switch drivers, it is an issue because the seat set up for the last selected profile.

- Induction charging doesn't work well with my phone case, so I need to plug it, but doing so my phone doesn't fit in the space, I have to put it sideways. 2 phones don't fit well in the center console. It would have been a good idea to have a space on the passenger side to put a phone, like where there is a led light.

- On the highway, when using the cruise control, it always brings back the lane assist after resume, even if I disabled it earlier. It doesn't do that on other roads.

- The little plastic thing holding the gas cap from falling has already snapped off and is barely holding after snapping it back in.

- After moving forward the passenger side middle row seat to access 3rd row seats, when putting it back in place you have to make sure the middle seat belt buckle is not in the way, otherwise the seat won't go back in place.

- Sometimes auto wiper wouldn't be fast enough, sometimes too fast. The lowest speed for wipers is way too fast for light rains.

- Air conditioning is random. You are freezing in the front and kids complain that it's hot in the 3rd row when set to sync. We found that setting fan speed to 1 or 2 for the front and 6 or 7 for the back was the best for everybody.

- Sometimes vented seats work great, sometimes they don't. I wonder if it's the material of my clothes or the way I sit or both, but I had mixed experiences so far, same thing for my girlfriend.

- Why did they put the blind angle camera behind the steering... I had to put the steering way up to be able to see the cameras.

Pros

- The ride is very comfortable, really smooth.

- It's the first car that I have a HUD and I love it. I just have to get used to check it instead of the dash 🙃.

- Parking assist and 360 cameras were very useful when parking in tight underground spaces.

- I like that it shows in the HUD the detected car and the line where the adaptive cruise is set, it helps to know when you will need to change line before the car slows too much. With my older car I was always disabling the adaptive cruise on the highway because I felt the car was slamming the brake when I was getting close and then hit the gas when I was switching lanes.

- Kids didn't complain that they were tired or that they wanted to stop, so I guess they were comfortable too.

- Even if on the highway the hybrid system is not at his best, we bought the car because on a regular basis we mainly do "city" driving and we are impressed by the city efficiency.

Even if there are more cons than pros we are really happy so far with our choice. There are no major cons, only irritating stuff, nothing major and we mainly notice things that don't work 😀. The next test will be winter driving, my girlfriend fears that she will miss the AWD. Originally our first target was the Sienna, but when we showed up at the dealership we were told "We don't have any, we can sell you one and we should get it in a year.". We don't have Toyota dealers around a lot, I made some calls but it was all the same. The Carnival was our next option, an AWD option would probably make it our preferred choice at first.

For those looking to buy, I hope it helps.
