Tree dieback

Is it just me or do the local trees look sickly.

Drove from PA to the border today and saw many leafless deciduous trees. And all of the spruce down to the border look brown and dry.

All around Boulevard as well, you can see through the trees and see the lake.

And not sure if it was just my eyes, but around Loch ski hill, from a distance anyway, things looked pretty bare.

I also golfed at Chapples last week and half of their trees are also dead.

Any foresters want to chime in?

Mud room addition cost

Looking to get a price on adding a mudroom to the back of my house. Unheated, no bigger than 100sqft

Anyone had work like this done recently? Who did you use and what was the cost?

Public Elementary Schools

Looking for some opinions from parents whose kids go to school in PA.

How did you decide which school to send your kids to, and how has your experience been?

I grew up in Toronto and walked to my neighbourhood school every day. All my friends lived within 5 blocks of my house and the school was my community growing up.

Here it seems neighbourhood schools can be highly influenced by economic wellbeing of the area and I just don’t know anything about bussing. And it scares the crap out of me to send a little one on the bus because whenever we went on a bus growing up it was a free for all.

And then of course there is the pressure of projecting my own failings on not learning French in school and thinking about sending my little one to immersion.

What has your experience been with north side schools? Is French immersion worth it? Is bussing safe or is that where the bullying happens? How are schools like St James, Gron Morgan, Vance Chapman? How impactful is it that your kids can walk to the school?

No junction box behind ceiling light

I discovered that there is no junction box behind a ceiling light in the home.

Is there a ceiling light I can purchase that has its own junction box that can be mounted to the drywall.

I do not want to cut a hole in the ceiling due to old popcorn ceiling. Previous home flippers drywalled over old popcorn, and likely plaster board even deeper. So I don’t want to disturb what may be asbestos.

Current wires are connected directly to the fixtures wires and the fixture is held on by a small flat bracket with two loose screws.

What are my best options to replace that fixture and add in a junction for the wires?

I didn’t have a lot of time so no interior photos.

Lots of asbestos siding though!

I hate my floor

Was installed by a home flipper.

Cheap laminate. Not waterproof.

They framed on top of it in some spots. There is an island on it as well as cabinets and appliances.

I also have cast iron rads that can’t be removed (no shut off valve).

What can I do here? Received a quote to rip it out and level some low spots and bumps. Was quoted $28k for 750sq ft. Obviously cant afford that.

Is there anything I can do to fix the really bad spots? Can I put any type of flooring over top of this flooring?

I can’t find a matching product at any local stores that would even fit the dimensions. I believe last time I measure they were a width of 4.5 inches.

Needless to say, it’s a nightmare

How is your elm tree doing?

Trying to decide if my tree is dead and or dying or is it just late to get leaves this year. North side. Close to the lake

Not finding many options through Google. Wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to repair a hole in some stucco. Typical late 70s early 80s Northwood style stucco.
