Has anyone ever heard of the indietronica/synthpop duo I Am the World Trade Center and the story behind the band?
Information about the band and the images below (I’ll try to break this up into sections):
The Two Members of the Band:
- This is the duo, which followed the traditional synthpop format with Dan Geller (left) being on the synth and Amy Dykes (right) being on vocals.
Band Origin:
They formed the band in 1999 with the name I Am the World Trade Center being conceived from them both living in Brooklyn and the two towers being a metaphor for one partnership, they chose the name as it represented the dynamic of them being two individuals who also stood together as one band.
- This is their debut album, Out of the Loop which released on July 17, 2001. The band began touring immediately following the album’s release.
The Event:
Unfortunately while they were on tour, the events of 9/11 happened, so they temporarily changed their name to I Am the World… to remedy the situation and avoid appearing insensitive or cause distress to the audiences they performed to.
They eventually reverted to their original band name as they felt it was more offensive to abandon the band name rather than keep it. Despite this change, and the fact they came up with the band name years before the event, they still faced backlash from audiences and venues that thought they were trying to capitalize off the tragedy.
Aftermath:
The band continued to face issues. In 2004, Amy Dykes was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma before the release of their third and final album The Cover Up with major tour dates being cancelled resulting in a lack of promotion for the album.
They attempted to do a final tour in 2005 but this was cut short when Amy was hospitalized with pneumonia. Later on in 2007, there were legal complications between the bands label, Kindercore Records and Dan Geller.
Unfortunately, this didn’t matter too much as the band had split in 2006 with Dan and Amy also splitting and going their own way.
Where they are today:
Dan Geller went on to become a prominent figure at University of Georgia while also co-founding Kindercore Vinyl, a pressing plant focused on developing sustainable, petroleum-free records.
Amy Dykes went on to study fashion merchandising at Oregon State University and later got engaged where she is now known today as Amy Scarborough.
The Eerie Coincidence:
- Now with that being said, I would like to discuss the album Out of the Loop. The tracklist involves 14 tracks with 3 exclusive ones. However I’d like to point out the title of the 11th track which is “September.”
The album released on July 17, 2001, 56 days before the events of 9/11. This was something that not even the band knew until fans pointed it out.
The two SpongeBob episodes used to create the Crazy Squidward meme were “Someone’s in the Kitchen with Sandy” and “Squid’s Day Off”
