What rack case are you using for Wing Rack?

I have an 8u rack that's about 17" deep (20 with covers on). It holds my Soundcraft UI24r, a sliding shelf with a wifi router and a small UPS mounted to the bottom of the rack in the back. IEM receivers are mounted on band members' pedal boards, not in the rack.

The UI has all inputs and outputs on the front, and we connect directly to it each show. I'll be replacing it with the Wing, so all connections will now be inside the rack, so I'll be reaching halfway in every time I'm making connections. It's probably fine for the 15 or so shows a year we do, but I'm curious if anyone is using racks that are more shallow for this reason.

Matrix for FOH on digital mixers?

Are you creating a matrix for your FOH mix, or going straight to the mains? I'm learning my way around a Wing Rack, and I currently have FOH going straight to mains. I understand about using matrices for livestream, stage center fills, etc (which I did on my UI24), but I'm wondering if I should change my current FOH setup.

Virtual soundcheck file formats

For those of you running virtual soundchecks, do you have a preferred audio format, and is that available on the desks you use? I've had a UI24r for 4 years, and FLAC was a nice balance between file quality and disc usage. I was also able to record only the tracks I needed directly to a large USB stick.

I'm moving to a Wing, which records only to wav and is limited to 64 GB between 2 SD cards. It also makes me record 32 tracks when I may only need 18-24 or so tracks, so I may have 14 blank tracks using up space. That also limits me to 92 minutes max recording time on the 2 SD cards vs getting full 4 hour shows on one USB on the UI, but that's not so much my focus right now. ETA: I could be misinterpreting here - it might be 92 minutes per card.

I'm sure Behringer has already been pushed on this, but I'm trying to figure out whether to run up this hill or just suck it up. I understand I also have the option of recording over USB to a laptop hard drive with more space, but I'm keeping everything as simple as I can for now.

Dear YT content creators

Thanks for sharing. Please turn down your intro music so it isn't 25 fucking dB louder than the speech in your video. Your entire jam is supposed to be about getting a good mix.

Global setting for Send output level on Floor?

I have guitar, bass and vocals running through my Floor, and the guitar output is Send 1. Is there a way to set the Send volume lower for all presets? Not a huge deal to set the level on the send block on each preset, but I'd have to remember for future presets.

This one goes to minus 2.5! (Sorry, Nigel)

Solved! See below.

...

I have a new Wing Rack mixer and noticed today that channels still get signal with the input gain at zero, and THEN I saw that the gain bottoms out at -2.5. These were big surprises after using a UI24r, where gain at zero allows no signal.

I read that zeroed out gain is whatever the manufacturer wants as a starting point, so different mixers may have different amounts of signal allowed through. Still a bit odd to me, but at least it solved the mystery. What I still don't understand is, if that set point is more or less arbitrary, why does the Wing go down to minus 2.5 instead of just making that zero? Are there other mixers with gain settings below zero?

This is also the first time I've seen separate gain and trim controls, but I understand that gain is the priority and trim is for fine tuning.

...

Solution H/T u/Chamberlain-Haller . It's line level vs mic level based on the connector to the combo input, so TRS is much hotter than XLR. Which makes total sense, so I should have realized it. TBF to everyone else here, I didn't specify TRS in my question, so sorry about that.

Problem with resting thumb on pickup

The other bassist/guitarist in my band (we trade off) has a Strandberg Boden, and he rests his thumb on the bridge pickup when he plays. This relieves the tension on the set screw spring and allows the screw to back out, which lets that side of the pickup rise up toward the E string. Just 45 minutes or so of play are enough for it to go from properly set to almost touching the string.

He's trying to learn not to anchor his thumb like that, but it's taking some time. Apart from that, though, I feel like this points to an issue with the pickup screw itself, or whatever it's threading into. Even after he stops anchoring like that, I wonder if it will continue to happen but at a slower rate.

Has anyone else ever experienced this, and is there a solution for the pickup and/or screw? It just occurred to me that he probably hasn't contacted Strandberg support about it, so I'll urge him to do that, too.

Trouble with standard effects

Note: Solved. Effect way more subtle than I thought.

I've successfully set up a few premium effects like delays and reverbs on buses, but I'm having trouble getting some standard effects to work, like Double Vocal and Velvet Imager. I've tried as pre and post direct inserts on my mic channel, and as a bus. I've also tried the Phaser and Tremolo just for testing. In all cases, the effects are set to On, and I have tried extreme settings with no apparent effect. I don't see any meters or activity on the effects, except for the VI meter that shows activity. I've tested through the main speakers and from a monitor output where the delays and reverbs work.

Weirdly, the Pitch Fix works, but is more subtle than I expected at extreme settings for testing.

Any advice?

Fader groups appear to be independent between Rack screen and apps

I've been learning my way around a Wing Rack, Wing Edit and CoPilot. Communications between all have been working well on most functions, including mute groups, but custom fader groups aren't making the jump. Is that supposed to be completely local, or is there a setting to make those changes global?

AAV in crawl space?

A friend of mine has an old one story house (2 bed, one bath) with a drain problem for the kitchen and bathroom sinks that seems to be due to one or possibly two issues - definitely not enough slope for an 8 foot run in the crawl space, and possibly not enough air intake. He's going to replace the 8 foot run and slope properly (and replace the 1 1/2" pvc with 2"), and 2 people (including me) advised a Studor vent.

Both of us recommended adding it in the kitchen cabinet, but he's thinking about putting it on the replaced pipe in the crawl, about 6" up between the joists. I think anywhere in the crawl is too low and may actually fill up with water, plus if it fails open in a few years, it would be better to smell it immediately from the kitchen cabinet rather than however long it takes to smell it in the house from the crawl space.

Am I giving the proper advice? Thanks.

What is the circled component in this monitor bus?

https://preview.redd.it/a4v3z0q3uhfh1.png?width=590&format=png&auto=webp&s=9ba08e6ee6d33284c63f3166420b9d5b9f76f7da

Solved by responses below. Fader. Thanks, all. ...

This is on one of 4 monitor buses, but this is the only one with the blue line coming up to the red dot. I can't find a description in the Wing UG, and if it's a meter, it doesn't correspond to anything on the Meters page.

This bus is using the front headphone jack, so maybe it's something particular to that?

Mix fader view of stereo linked channels?

Note: I found a workaround and added to the end of this post.

...

Is there a way to make the faders move together or make the 2nd fader in the pair disappear for stereo linked inputs? I've created a couple of different stereo channels in the routing page, but those channel faders still look independent in the mix view, whether I'm in Wing Edit or Copilot. The stereo channel works as it should with panning, etc, but it's a little weird that I can pull up either fader for the volume.

Where I could see this being a problem is by using the right and left arrows to go back and forth to set up processing. If I land on the right side of the channel, it would look like I haven't set up any EQ, compression, etc. That's OK if things are fairly static, but I could see it being a time waster with changeovers.

Workaround: By default, when a channel is set to stereo, the right side fader retains the routing to the same source group. Routing the right input to a different source ends that. In my case, I've chosen to send to a "User Signal" source group. That feels a little kludgy, but it's better than having incorrect channel names on unused faders.

ETA: Here's a video of what happens when I change channel 23 from mono to stereo.

How to get effects into monitors/IEMs for live use?

ETA: I got it working with the bus into the bus. The problem was apparently that I didn't have the effects enabled with the "On" button in both the top and bottom of the screen in Wing Edit.

...

I've been working my way through a test setup of a Wing Rack using Wing Edit, and I've gotten signals from my 3 inputs (vocals, guitar, bass) to come through the mains (outputs 7/8) and 2 separate IEMs (outputs 1/2 and rear, and HP jack on front).

I've added delay and reverb effects and can get them through the mains, but not into either of the IEM buses. I understand theoretically that I can route a bus into a bus or use the higher channel inputs (eg, channels 33, 34), or use aux sends, but I can't figure out how to make it happen through any of those and Youtube is a rabbit hole.

FWIW, I have a lot of experience with a UI24r, in case there are any useful analogs for the signal path.

Yes, the front headphone jack can carry a separate monitor mix

Note: This info pertains to the Wing Rack, FW version 3.1.1).

The HP jack question has been answered a few times, but there are still a lot of posts on other sites that say it can't be done, so I figured this info warranted a post here. I assume this was made possible with a firmware update sometime in the past year, but so far I can't find documentation to show which update.

The trick is that, in the Routing page, the front HP jack is in the "Aux Out" group, not the "Local Out" group.

  • Go to Routing>Outputs and choose the Aux Out group.
  • Assign 7 and 8 (only choices) to an unused stereo bus pair.
  • Select "Buses" in the left menu
  • Click the Name/Icon/Color box to set those
  • Click on the boxes under Channel and select the channels for the bus feed (most likely "All Ch")
  • Set preferred options on the right and click "Apply." (ETA - Send mode must be set to "Tap\Pre." My other choices are: Send Pan - Link to ch pan; Send Level - Set to 0 dB; Send Enable - Set On)

The new monitor mix will appear along with the others in the Buses menu

Does Behringer Wing AES50 work with this type of Ethercon connected box?

Will that type of box work connected directly to the Wing with an ethercon cable, or does it require a converter type of box, or would it not work at all?

Wing rack front headphone output for mains?

I'm exploring the Wing rack option for a new mixer, but the built in output limitations might be a problem for a while. IIUC, the front headphone output main mix only and can't be used for a personalized monitor mix. Would it suffice for the mains with this signal chain - TRS>Dual mono>DI boxes>active speakers? I almost hate to write that because it sounds so kludgy, but I'm not sure when I'd be able to justify shelling out for an AES50 stage box.

For reference, we're a bar/small event band lugging around our own PA. 90% of our shows are self contained, the other 10% are just our mixer for IEMs. I've been using a Soundcraft UI24r for 4 years and have been very happy with it, but I've started to see a bit of flakiness. I'm considering buying a direct replacement, but this is my chance to move to a current development platform with upgraded pres and effects.

I'm sort of considering an X32 rack, but it's also out of development.
