Saw something at the second-hand music shop that I couldn't pass up.

Yeah, I may have a weakness for black and white instruments.

Risa electric tenor. In low-G tuning this thing shreds! Now I have an excuse to start playing with pedals and stuff.

I followed your advice and she looks much nicer now. Can't wait 'till she blooms!

In Portland, Oregon. Unidentified variety.

The other day I asked for advice on caring for this scraggly ol' girl, and you folks delivered.

After lots of careful pruning and deadheading I pulled back the gravel from under the rose and cut back the weed mat. I recovered an old cedar planter frame from the house I am moving from and used that to frame the bush.

The root ball protruded up above the soil line, up to where the gravel was, so I filled the planter with garden soil and mixed in some rose food before topping it with cedar mulch.

I don't have the materials for a trellis yet, but now that she is pruned I am thinking she might do well free-standing, so long as I keep up on pruning.

Thanks again for all the advice! Once she blooms again I may be back for an ID.

EDIT: I am thinking about planting a few shasta daisies in the planter around the rose. Any reason that wouldn't work?

So a guy is getting drug tested for a new job...

The technician points out the positive opioid result and asks the guy if he is on any prescription medications.

"No," he says, "but I eat a bagel with poppy seeds on it every morning."

"Okay," says the technician, "but how does that explain the methamphetamine and benzodiazepine?"

"It's an everything bagel."

Just moved. What can I do with this scraggly girl in the back yard? (PNW)

I am in Portland, Oregon. I do not know the identity of this rose.

Yeah, I know, the gravel sucks, but it is what it is and it isn't going away any time soon. That is a project for another summer.

This rose in the back yard seems healthy in spite of zero care for the last several years. Appears to be a climber but she has nothing to climb on. I have never cared for a rosebush before. What can I to to make her healthy and handsome?

Has anyone thought about how valuable wood would be in any intergalactic civilization?

Think about it. Trees are a resource that are slow to replenish, will often be decimated by the time a planetary civilization develops space travel, would be difficult to establish in newly colonized or terraformed worlds, and are far from guaranteed to evolve on any planet (they have only been on Earth for 400 million years)

In terms of trade, I think wood of all sorts would be treated as a luxurious and rare resource.
