1755 Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg 1/24 Thaler, commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the Peace of Augsburg.

The Peace of Augsburg was an agreement signed in 1555 that ended religious conflict between Catholics and Lutherans throughout the Holy Roman Empire.

This established the principle of cuius regio, eius religio “whose realm, his religion”, allowing each prince to choose whether their territory would be Catholic or Lutheran without any external pressures.

This is a nice example of the small circulating commemorative coins issues across many different German states in the 1700s, will need to dip this in some acetone to get rid of PVC damage though.

AN 13 (1816) Haiti 25 Centimes.

The first republic of Haiti was formed in 1804 after enslaved Haitians defeated the French forces in the Haitian Revolution, declaring independence under Jean-Jacques Dessalines.

The new republic faced international isolation, economic hardship, and political instability following France's forced reparations from Haiti in exchange for diplomatic recognition.

I like the full arms on the obverse, as well as the ouroboros encircling the denomination.

1894A German New Guinea Mark

German New Guinea was a German colonial possession in the northeastern part of New Guinea and nearby Pacific islands from 1884 until Australian occupation during WWI in 1914.

The colony was initially administered by the German New Guinea Company, a chartered trading company that sought to profit from plantations and trade, but financial problems led the German government to take direct control in 1899.

This is probably my all time favourite German Empire design, really cant beat the incredible obverse.

No Date (1909-11) Xuantong Kwangtung Province 1 Yuan / 7 Mace and 2 Candareens, chopmarked.

Kwangtung Province was a major trading region in southern China during the late 1800s and early 1900s, influenced by foreign trade and political unrest.

A very nice and wholesome example of the large Chinese dollars circulated throughout the Qing Dynasty and neighbouring areas for trade, the subtle chopmarks on the reverse hint at how this coin was exchanged for trade throughout its time period.

No date (1577-1595) County of Tyrol Thaler, Hall.

Tyrol was an Austrian estate which served as a wealthy and strategically vital Alpine territory for the House of Habsburg since 1363, prospering from control of key mountain trade routes and being an important defensive and administrative frontier of the Holy Roman Empire.

This lovely Hall silver is an example of the many thalers produced at the county's mint, due to their control of the richest silver mining regions in Europe at the time. The Hall mint was trusted in striking large silvers that were correctly weighted and pure for use across the empire in trade.

1795 City of Bern Thaler, two feathers type.

Bern was a wealthy and politically powerful city state in the Swiss Confederation, governed by a small patrician elite that controlled surrounding rural territories.

By the end of the century, growing revolutionary pressures and the 1798 French invasion led to the collapse of the city's old aristocratic government and its incorporation into the newly centralised Helvetic Republic.

Christian Louis inherited the Principality of Brunswick-Lüneburg upon his uncle's death in 1648 then opted to give his younger brother George William the territory of Calenburg as the Duke preferred ruling the larger territories of Lüneburg.

His reign would end 24 years later dying childless, with his younger brother taking dukedom and sticking to family tradition by giving his younger brother Calenburg

This gorgeous piece is very high grade and lustrous for it's time, llustrating a rendition of the globus cruciger with a detailed nine-line inscription commemorating the late Duke's death.

1704 Leopold I Archduchy of Austria Thaler, Vienna mint.

Leopold I ruled as Holy Roman Emperor from 1658 to 1705, overseeing a turbulent era for the Habsburg monarchy marked by prolonged wars against the Ottoman Empire and the expansionist ambitions of Louis XIV.

After the Battle of Vienna during the Great Turkish War, Leopold's forces pushed the Ottomans out of Central Europe, allowing the Habsburgs to consolidate control over Hungary and greatly strengthen their position within the Holy Roman Empire.

These thalers were minted in large quantities to finance the costly campaign against the Ottomans, highlighting both the immense financial strain of this war and the Habsburg monarchy's vast wealth and silver quantities.

Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover was a German state within the Holy Roman Empire that rose to prominence in the 1700s, especially after George Louis became King of Great Britain in 1714.

This personal union vastly boosted its political influence and economic development, making Hannover a key player in European diplomacy and conflicts of the 18th century even after the end of their Great Britain rule following William IV's death.

This large silver piece prominently features the Saxon Steed, one of my favourite German motifs. The reverse showcases crowned arms representing the state's many unions and territories ruled at the time, offering a level of intricate detail that I find especially captivating on these thalers.

Emmanuel was the 70th Grand Master of the Order from 1775 to 1797. While his magistracy was not regarded as eventful, he created lasting institutions such as the Anglo-Bavarian langue and the Russian Grand Priory.

The last few years of his reign were turbulent as the Order declined following the French Revolution, then less than a year after his death Napoleon invaded and kicked the Order out of Malta.

Minted by the colonial government to compete with the many Maria Theresa Thalers circulating around Eritrea for trade. These used a bust of Italia turrita, the national personification of Italy (which looks similar to Maria Theresa) and minted these coins to have a very similar look to an older Thaler to match the size and look of MTTs, ensuring they were accepted by Eritrean and surrounding traders.

This large 34 gram silver was minted for circulation in the Duchy of Guelders, a territory roughly in parts of today’s Netherlands and Germany that rose to prominence as a duchy in the 14th century. They frequently fought powerful neighbours like the County of Holland and the Burgundian Netherlands before eventually being absorbed into Habsburg control in the 16th century.

The SS Central America was a sidewheel steamship that sank in a hurricane off the Carolina coast in 1857 while carrying hundreds of passengers and a massive shipment of Californian Gold Rush treasure.

The loss of crucial gold needed for the NYC economy contributed to the Panic of 1857, a financial crisis in the US that caused widespread bank failures and a sharp recession. This wreck would not be discovered until 1988, deep in the Atlantic.

One of the many unique commemorative designs made to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Martin Luther's Ninety-five Theses, with this design in particular intended for use on gold 2 Ducats.

Despite being a silver-struck pattern, these pieces would semi-regularly see circulation across the city and neighbouring towns.

Francis Xavier took over the regency of Saxony after his older brother, Frederick Christian, died only 74 days into his reign. While his regency only lasted 5 years, he served to continue the rationalistic reforms of his late brother, until Frederick Augustus II became of age to take the role of electorate.

This piece in particular shows the intricate bust of Xavier, with part of his uniform being detailed down to the individual pattern. The reverse displays a beautiful crowned arms encapsulating the other duchies and territories part of the electorate.

The Imperial British East Africa Company was a company founded in 1888 to advance British commercial, political, and imperial interests in nowadays Kenya and Uganda by controlling their key trade routes.

Due to financial losses in ventures, limited resources, and resistance from local communities, the company proved unable to govern effectively which caused the British government to take direct control in 1895 and establish the East Africa Protectorate.

This rupee was a piece I've wanted for a long time, not only due to it's issuers' unique history but also the beautiful crowned sun obverse design that makes this coin stand out as one of the best looking British colonial pieces ever minted.
