Irish Free State & UK 1928 Silver Half Crown

The Irish Free State issued its own coins for the first time in 1928. Free State silver coins were minted with 75% silver while British coinage was only 50%, but this didn't make Irish coinage superior as the intrinsic value was still far less than the face value.

British coinage remained legal tender in the Free State for a while, and Free State coinage was quite common in Northern Ireland as well, although the nickel 3 and 6d pieces weren’t compatible.

Somebody spent their collection..

All in the same supermarket till. Been looking out for a deposited collection like this for my 8 years in retail.

I've heard of it happening to one other colleague when a girl was given coins her grandmother collected and sadly spent.

I hope the previous owner of this collection has some good karma coming their way as they've made my day and they've gone to someone who will appreciate them.

I also found football a couple months back so I have the top three Olympics!

Palestine Mandate 1927 Silver 100 Mils(=Florin)

In 1927, the British Mandate officially adopted the pound as its currency, with its value pegged to sterling. However, it wasn’t subdivided into 1000 mils instead of shillings and pence. Therefore, this 100 mil piece was equivalent to two shillings or one florin.

While contemporary British coinage was only 50% silver, Palestinian coins were 72%. However, this didn’t make Palestinian coinage superior, since the melt value of even the pre-1920 sterling silver coins was only about 40% of the face value back then.

Looking for testers for British Coin Atlas

Hi all,

The mods have kindly given me permission to post this.

I’ve spent the last few months building British Coin Atlas, an app covering British coinage with a particular focus on overseas territories and colonial issues.

It’s still in development, but it’s now at the stage where I need some proper collectors to test it, spot errors, find bugs and tell me what could be improved.

If anyone here would like to help, I’ll give you 90 days of full access free.

To take part:
Create an account at britishcoinatlas.com, but don’t start the 14-day trial. Then please send me a Reddit message with the email address you registered with and I’ll activate the tester access from my end.

This tester offer will stay open for one week from this post. After that, any new users will need to use the normal 14-day trial.

Any feedback, corrections or criticism is very welcome.

Thanks,
Steve

From the "States of Jersey" (1870): a 1/13th shilling coin

I always learn something from this sub, including the existence of this oddly denominated coin from Jersey (Channel Islands): a 1/13th shilling coin that reflected the reality that the local currency was aligned with French money; a shilling was equal to 26 French sous, so 1/13 of a shilling was two sous. This is essentially a two penny coin from 1870.

This is bronze coin with a profile of Queen Victoria (designed by William Wyon).

Fake £2 coin ?

I just tried to spend this £2 coin in my local newsagent. The shop keeper told me it was a fake.

I asked how he could tell, and he said because the silver part was so shiny and that it should be dull.

I’ve not heard of fake £2 coins before. Is it a thing?

New 2026 £5 Coin - Legal Tender/Commemorative

Can anyone tell me, are these legal tender and commemorative coins?

Seeing as they have the King on them and they’re dated 2026, I know they haven’t been released into general circulation. They’re not particularly expensive either, and I think they’re a really nice design. Personally, I think these coins should be fully circulated, but that’s just me!

I have about 30 of them, all brand new, which I picked up in a private bulk sale.

I’m just wondering what their actual legal tender status is on these fine £5 coins.

I'm pretty sure i could use these at a Petrol Station no?

Edward 1st Penny?

Hi All!

Not super familiar (at all to be honest!) With coins before 1700.. I saw this at a market yesterday for £18 so picked it up for funs. I believe it's an Edward 1st penny, minted in London? It's about 18-19mm wide. Is this right - or anything else you can tell as it looks like there were quite a few variants minted!

A question around coins this age and value/condition for future finds: how does the clipping impact the "condition" overall of a coin? Obviously we would like a whole coin, but given the choice, would you preference a coin with less wear but more clipping/missing, visa versa, or it really comes down to both and the relative proportion of each? (If that makes sense!). Thanks in advance :)

My first ever COPPER coins.

Got some questions though,

  1. How to remove the ugly rust/oxide?

  2. Please tell me each denomination, as i am not certain, but i think its a cartwheel penny, regular penny, a half penny and a 4 double.

  3. What should this cost? I am checking to see if i got scammed!

  4. Where is a good place to get bulk copper?

  5. Thank you, have a good day. =)
