Bittersweet end to my pumping journey

Bittersweet end to my pumping journey

Firstly shoutout to this sub for all of your help and guidance and to whoever had initially posted this meme that I stole for my cake.

My plan was to nurse and I tried on & off for the first 3 months of my sons life. So many visits with my LC & everytime ended in heartbreak as his weighted feeds showed he wasn’t transferring despite them saying everything looked fine with his latch. Grieving not being able to nurse has been really hard and makes me want to cry every time I think about it. I desperately wish it would’ve worked out for me. I know I tried so hard but I still feel guilty and disappointed in myself. Like somehow if I just tried harder I could’ve done it. My tailbone hurt from the amount of time I sat in my rocking chair latching & pumping what felt like nonstop all day.

So I turned to exclusively pumping. I pretty much was pumping 8 times a day plus latching when I could in those first 3 months then stopped bothering trying to latch and pumped only. At the beginning for the first 2 months I was an under supplier and eventually became a just enougher. Then ended up making a few extra oz a day and it was the most rewarding feeling. I have elastic nipples and let me tell you my nipples have been RAW and look terrible since the beginning. I even saw a breastfeeding medicine specialist & when she saw my nipples she looked taken aback and was like oh wow your nipples are blistered. I burst into tears because it had just been an incredibly painful process the entire time and her reaction made me realize just how bad they must’ve looked. I lived off of APNO to be able to tolerate wearing a nursing tank. All the professionals I saw said I was using the right size flanges and right settings. I was hoping they’d tell me I was doing something wrong & give me an easy fix to make pumping less painful. My nipples just suck.

Then once I became a just enougher I started getting incessant clogged ducts. I’d be crying in the shower trying to use the heat before a pump to get the clog out since I was swollen nearly to my armpit. I couldn’t believe how uncomfortable it was. I tried sunflower lecithin 3 x a day and did all the things and I just had them nonstop. Then around 4ish months I got mastitis and WOW. I felt like I had the absolute worst case of the flu. I was shaking so incredibly hard and the pain was unbearable. 10/10 would have taken the cervical dilation balloon again a million times over than the mastitis pain. It was unbelievable. Then I got my period. And it wouldn’t stop. My supply dropped by 5-7 oz overnight. I then had such a horrible milk bleb it was quite literally nearly the size of my nipple. It hurt so bad & I was at work in the hospital so I took a 24G IV needle and popped it myself. That’s when I decided I had to stop.

The amount of money I spent on supplements and flanges and pumps in general is nuts. My goal was 6 months but I just finished at 5 months. Still randomly getting engorged but hand expressing when it gets too uncomfortable. Haven’t pumped in 3 days and hoping this is the end. So much happened in these past 5 months that’s it’s hard to believe I only made it 5 months. It feels like an eternity. My body fought me every step of the way I feel like. I’m trying to be grateful that I pushed through and made it this far but I’m so emotional about stopping at the same time. I can’t believe this is it. And I can’t believe this experience has been this hard and painful. I envy those who can nurse and those who can pump without pain. I would’ve given anything to be able to have made this work. It is what it is and now it is time for me to move on. Sorry if there are punctuation and spelling errors. I’m just kind of letting it all out 😂 best of luck to everyone exclusively pumping. Y’all are incredible badasses. Peace out ✌️

First day back to work in the hospital while exclusively pumping

Had multiple call offs already. I woke up at 4 am to pump and pumped again on my way in. The struggle of putting pumps on and off in the backseat of my car. Off to a great start 🙃😂

Recurrent clogged ducts :(

Just here to rant a little & get things off my chest to internet strangers who will understand. My pumping journey has been an incredibly difficult one. I am now 3 months into exclusively pumping. I always wanted to nurse but his latch has been not great from the start. I’ve been trying on an off these entire 3 months and given up on trying to make it work. We just had another weighted feed a week ago and he took in 10 cc in 20 mins. So it’s just not working to even try to latch him anymore.
I pump 8 times a day and have always incorporated a power pump into my first morning session when I’m the fullest. I started off as an under supplier and am now a just enougher. Some days I’ll get lucky and have an extra 5 oz. I drink a ton of water a day. I take sunflower lecithin daily. I had my LC look at my flanges and flange sizes and re measure here and there to make sure nothing has changed. I have elastic nipples so oh boy was it a journey. A very painful journey. I couldn’t even wear a shirt in the beginning it was so incredibly painful. My OB prescribed me APNO which saved me and eventually now it doesn’t hurt to pump. I got my supply to where it needs to be. Aaaand now I’m getting clogged ducts nonstop. It’s like a sick joke. Finally got to a good place where pumping isn’t painful and I’m making enough and now this. Have had them on and off for the past few weeks. Had a bad one last week. Resolved after a couple a days. Again have one now and my boob feels like exploding.
I guess I’m just venting because I feel like it’s always something and my body fights me every step of the way to do something it’s supposed to do. I couldn’t latch to save my life. Nipples we’re in so much pain nonstop and I fought through it. Now that I’ve been on a schedule and making enough I keep getting painful clogged ducts and terrified of mastitis. I just feel so defeated and so torn up. I have worked so incredibly hard to get to this point so it’s just extra devastating because I can’t go on like this. I wanted to exclusively pump for just 6 months. At this point I think I’m gonna have to cut back and combo feed with formula. Again nothing wrong with that I just put so much time, money and effort into pumping and it just sucks that no matter what I do I have issues.
Thank you for letting me rant 😂😭

Elastic nipples are awful & the worst part of my postpartum experience:(

Just wanted to vent to other people who can understand. I’m in tears because I have elastic nipples and am constantly in so much pain. I’ve done everything I could think of. Met with my LC multiple times. I’ve tried different flanges. Different flange sizes. Different pumps. I have the Spectra S1, momcozy m5’s, baby Buddha 2.0 & eufy S1 pro. They all hurt even on the lowest possible suction. It’s so devastating because I’m willing to pump & have been producing enough milk I haven’t had to supplement with formula in weeks which I’ve worked really hard to do. I produce just enough. I’ve tried spacing out the pumps to give my nipples a break while still managing 8 pumps a day & my supply is dropping just from spacing them out more 🙃

I’ve tried the stretch less milk more setting designed for elastic nipples on my eufy which does give me better output but doesn’t help with the pain still. I’m always icing and taking ibuprofen. It just really really sucks that this has to hurt so bad. I feel like I’ve invested so much time and money into this. My goal at this point is just to exclusively pump for the first three months while I’m still on maternity leave but I feel like everything is against me. I’m currently 7 weeks post partum. I just want to feed my baby while not being in pain 24/7 :(. Sorry I just needed someone to talk to or anyone to vent to who could understand how I feel right now.

Anyone else with elastic nipples? Want to know what ended up working for you.

Hello!
When I decided to exclusively pump I saw my lactation consultant who told me I have elastic nipples and she brought up things like the pumpin pals flanges. I ordered some from legendairy milk just waiting for them to arrive. I use the baby Buddha 2.0 as my primary pump with the eufy s1 pro as my wearable. I did call and leave a message to ask them if I should downsize my flange insert size further.

When we measured my nipples & all of the times I’ve subsequently measured the 15mm is a perfect size. Anything smaller would be too small. However I’m still having so much pain and inflammation. I read online sometimes you need to go 1-2mm smaller than your actual size to prevent more tissue getting pulled in if you have elastic nipples. I’m waiting to hear back before I try this because I’m nervous of going even smaller. However after pumping there’s a red ring around my nipples so I’m thinking with them being more elastic that they’re just stretching too much & pulling in extra tissue even with the correct flange size.

I’m so over my nipples burning all the time :( just looking for experiences others have had & what worked for them. Did you have to go smaller than what your nipples measured? Which flange inserts worked for you? Thanks in advance!

Hi! Sick of looking at reviews because they’re alllllllll incentivized anymore. I have long hair (down to my butt) and am almost finished with my first bottle of the kerastase premiere repairing conditioner and honestly really haven’t noticed a huge difference at all. For the price not sure it’s something I’ll repurchase. I have hard water where I live so I use the L’Oréal metal detox shampoo. Any holy grails?
