School-Affiliated Flag Football

School-Affiliated Flag Football

Hoping to spread the word about some of the struggling enrollment counts for D65/Evanston Park District for fall flag football. I signed my son up to help with the integration into his new school after he was a victim of Kingsley's closure.

Unfortunately, there may not be enough kids signed up for his new school to have a team. So I wanted to share it here in case others were interested in registering their kids and didn't know it was an option.

Some more details from D65/Evanston Park District:

Each school needs a minimum of 9 enrolled participants to have a team. Schools with fewer than 9 participants or without a coach in place risk not being able to field a team.

If a school does not meet the minimum enrollment by August 20, we will do our best to keep all registered participants in the program by transferring them together to another school team that meets the requirements.

We understand that transferring to another school may not work for every family. If this is the case for your child, please let me know, and we will cancel the registration and provide a full refund.

Current Enrollment

Baker: 1 enrolled — Coach secured

Chiaravalle: 1 enrolled — coach needed

Dawes: 4 enrolled — Coach secured

Dewey: 5 enrolled — coach needed

Foster: 1 enrolled — Coach secured

King Arts: 11 enrolled — Coaches secured

Lincoln: 4 enrolled — coach needed

Lincolnwood: 11 enrolled — Coach secured

Oakton: 11 enrolled — Coach secured

Orrington: 12 enrolled — Coaches secured

Walker: 6 enrolled — Coach secured

Washington: 6 enrolled — Coach secured

Willard: 2 enrolled — coach needed

This program is beginner friendly. So, if your child has even a passing interest in playing, I hope you'll consider signing them up.

Incident Yesterday at Home Depot

Yesterday, around 10:15am I pulled into the Aldi/Home Depot lot with my seven year old son.

As we pulled in, there was a group of guys across the way from us in the Steak & Shake parking lot. There was one guy standing outside their van and two or three others in the van itself. They began shouting at us and told us to stay there. They were smiling and laughing. It felt playful but weird. Abruptly, the other guys got out of the van and all began running towards us without explanation— fanning out and seeming like they were going to surround our car.

It startled my son (and me too.)

I didn't know where this was headed and it went from just feeling confusing to feeling scary. So, we gunned it. In doing so, I nearly hit the guy who was originally standing outside the van.

My son and I just left the parking lot after that and he's been talking about it regularly since. And, obviously, I'm thinking about it too as I post about it 24 hours later.

Curious if others have encountered this and, if so, what it was all about.

And, if any of the guys from the van are on here, sorry I nearly hit one of you but consider the optics when you shout at a car and then abruptly try to surround them. It's just asking for a fight or flight response from the car's occupants.

Nazareth Speedway 2026

While out at Pocono I took my drone to check out Nazareth. You can make the name out on the wall by the finish line still.

Power definitely made a new fan today

Took off work and headed to Road America with my son for a day of IndyCar testing. He got to meet Will Power (among a ton others) and Will was incredibly gracious— letting my son see the car up close, hold the wheel, and venture into the truck for a couple goodies.

My son hasn't stopped talking about it since. And now he's pumped for next weekend.

FYI Tuesday's IndyCar Test at Road America is open to the public

Haven't seen it posted here yet so thought l'd put out a little PSA that if you have some disposable PTO or an obligation-free Tuesday, you can go watch IndyCar for the day.

Tickets are $20 online plus a $6 service fee. You can probably buy them at the gate too but haven't seen that confirmed. Kids under 16 get in free.

Maybe see some of y'all on Tuesday!

How young is too young for biking downtown?

Live in Evanston. Unexpectedly got two tickets to Saturday night's Chicago Fire game. I'm really considering taking my bike and my son's bike on the Metra and biking over to Soldier Field from Ogilvie.

The route looks to be 77% protected bike lanes. Where it's not, I would make us walk our bikes.

Part of me is screaming internally that it's foolish because he's only seven. But, on the other hand, if we only ride in protected lanes... Is it *that* foolish?

So I'm curious if others have done this with their kids or if a consensus emerges that he's too young still.

Recommendations for replacing window motor?

My old, but paid off, Hyundai has a stuck window. Tried replacing the fuse but this seems to be a motor or something electrical within the door panel.

Does anyone have any decently priced recommendations of shops/persons that have been trustworthy and reliable with repairs like this?

I took it to Heart Auto and was kind of flabbergasted at the amount they wanted to do it— over $1200. Maybe my expectations are off though. So, if anyone here has relatable experience, I'd love to hear it.
