Ease of travelling with wingfoil

It is often mentioned that one of the advantages of wingfoil and inflatable boards in particular is that it is easier for travel.

Flying with Wizzair 32kg sports equipment is same price as 23kg normal luggage. Loaded it to the max with gong xxl pack, all clothes and extra gear.

Just thinking, it could easily be rigid board there instead or even a full windsurf kit.

As someone who normally travels with small backpack, assumed sports equipment was much more expensive and inflatable wingfoil would fit into a regular 20/23kg bag (mine does not, but I can see it being feasible when I move to a smaller board - still no reason not to take sports option instead for extra 10kg)

Am I missing something ?

Has anyone been to Obidos lagoon (Foz do Arelho, Portugal) ?

Beginner without reliable local spot, want to crash course it somewhere with close to ideal conditions in Europe in July.

I am slowly overcoming all the usual challenges, what really annoys me is drifting downwind, with onshore wind I swim for 10 min and then lose all that distance in 10 seconds that it takes me to flip the wing and get on the knees. With other fails and recovering position I get maybe 1-3 successful starts in an hour which also don't last long. I assume it is not much of a problem once you start flying but it feels like it would take much longer to get to that point in these conditions. I would rather keep trying and then just walk back.

Obidos looks ideal, reliable wind from the ocean, flat water, safe and sandy, cooler water so you can keep wetsuit for protection.

Just wanted to hear actual feedback before I commit to 2 weeks there? Thanks

Any way to pay Parcel Force customs fee proactively?

Had a parcel from France delivered to PF depot a couple of days ago, I assume next step is getting paper card by regular post, can I expedite it somehow, pay online / by phone and maybe even collect as it is needed ASAP? thanks

Did anyone regret getting board too big for learning?

Decided to get my own kit: https://www.gong-galaxy.com/en-gb/products/gong-pack-wingfoil-inflatable-hipe-first-26 but not sure whether to get 6.6 (155L board) or 7.1 (175L).

Price is almost the same, weight difference is only 0.5kg, both should fit into 20kg checked in luggage.

I am 6.2/100kg, 10-15 knots inland or choppy sea. Only had a few sessions and 180L rigid with waves was much more manageable than 160L on flat water.

Based or Gong recommendation and numerous forum posts that I went through it should be 155L. AI is absolutely sure on 175L.

I have no reliable local spot and it is very hard to organise time on water. My concern is that while 155L may be the right size I will lose valuable time fighting balance issues, but it is not clear how much I sacrifice by getting a board too big

Thanks

Beginner - balance issues before wing is powered

I have some windsurfing background, but no local spot to practice and therefore no equipment of my own. Because of that, the learning journey has been harder than it should have been - irregular lessons in different conditions with different gear, and forgetting the basics in between sessions.

I want to do it properly with wingfoil now and get my own kit (thinking about the Gong HIPE First), so I can take it with me on holidays and practice consistently.

I had some lessons this week. Conditions were around 10 knots with waves, using a 6.5 m wing, a 160 L Vayu learner board (I’m 192 cm / 100 kg), and roughly a 1700 cm² foil. Lots of falls at first, but after a couple of hours I could ride comfortably in the standing position. The soft‑top board was nice, although I still managed to burn the skin on both knees and elbows.

I assumed that without waves I’d be totally fine with the same setup. I moved to another spot with no waves, slightly stronger wind, same 6.5 m wing, a 2000 cm² foil, and a 160 L board - but this time it was a basic white/blue hard board, similar to 230 L windsurf boards, and definitely not as wide as the Vayu.

It was a disaster. Standing up and riding with the wing powered was fine, but everything before that took many attempts - falling backwards/forwards from the kneeling position, lots of micro‑balancing to get the front leg up, then falling again while trying to lift the wing into position. Once standing and using the wing for counterbalance, I had no major stability issues. Even with knee pads, kneeling on that board was unbearable after a few seconds.

I assume an inflatable board should be easier on the knees and more forgiving, but I’m not sure whether the Gong‑recommended 155 L will be manageable for me. Does it need to be 40L bigger than a rigid board as Gong FAQ says? Should I choose the 175 L instead, or am I overthinking it and just need more practice with the recommended size?

I also have a local spot where only SUPs are allowed. I was thinking about putting a SUP fin on the Gong board (if that’s even possible) and practicing balance there between holidays. Does that make any sense?

Any advice from Rhodes, Greece?

Comfortable on windsurf, far from a pro though, sailed 50m on kitesurf twice. Really want to learn wingfoil basics/intermediate and buy a kit to continue practicing locally in worse conditions (UK).

Going to Rhodes end of May, will have 2 full days, then 4 days mornings 9-12, then 2 full days again.

Initially planned to go to Prasonisi for all days, loved this place for windsurf. But only single expensive hotel at the spot, no group wing foil lessons and prices are generally higher.

Did some googling, and it looks like it makes sense to take 2 day course in Theologos, then go to Prasonisi for 4 days, private or rental there, then Ixia for 2 days for more group lessons.

Can it be done better utilizing the time I will have ?

Thanks
