Any ideas how the sheer fabric is affixed to the jeans?

I saw someone wearing these on IG and thought it would be a cool way to upcycle some jeans that are ripped beyond repair. I'm wondering the best way to "install" the sheer fabric to achieve this look. The edges look super smooth so I was thinking maybe fabric glue? Or a layer of something fusible in between and then pressed?

This jumpsuit/romper is made from Simplicity pattern S3011 (see last photo for envelope image), but this happens to me almost any time I try to attach a waistband to something. What am I not getting here??

I followed the pattern as written, other than going for shorts instead of pants. You do the whole top "shirt" half first, including the three channels/casings for elastic, which becomes the waistband when you attach top half to bottom half. I used the pattern guide to cut the suggested lengths of elastic for the pattern size I was making.

After I attached the top half to the bottom half at the waistband, I serged the seam to finish it, then threaded the three elastics through the casings. That's when I see that the bottom strip of elastic in particular is kind of warping the seam and the top edge of the shorts part with it.

Just to note, I think I probably made the whole garment at least one size too big - could that be contributing to the issue? I was thinking of going in and removing an inch or two of the elastic to cinch the waist in more, but not sure if that would look even worse.

Or, is it possible that serging the seam made it too bulky to gather properly? I included some photos of the inside for reference. The seam allowance got fairly bulky especially along the top edges of the pockets where there are more layers; I did try grading to reduce the bulk before serging. If this could be the culprit, what would be a better way to deal with this seam - don't serge it, but maybe trim the allowance down super close to the seam? I think I have enough room between the serged edge and the actual seam to shear it off if needed.

Any tips are greatly appreciated! I was so happy with how this project was going until this issue. (Please ignore the slight wonkiness around the bottom part of the zipper and center seam, I know that could be smoother but that's another fix for another day. 🫠)
