this is because they thought that lady day or march 25 is the beginning of each year
in 1750 they passed to change the beginning of the year to January 1st
so dec 31 1751 is not followed by jan 1 1751 but by jan 1 1752, making the year 1751 282 days long
in september 1752 eleven days were skipped as the british changed the calendar to gregorian from julian
in scotland the year 1599 is 282 days long since this change was decreed by king james VI
