If you got 0 replies from 500 sends, stop rewriting your copy
Seeing a lot of "sent 500 emails, zero replies, how do I fix my copy" posts. Quick reality check: at even a 3% reply rate, the odds of 500 prospects all ghosting you are like 1 in 4 million. That's not bad copy, that's something broken upstream.
(One caveat: if that's 500 sends across a 4-step sequence, you only emailed ~125 people. Zero replies there is way less crazy.)
I work on Sendvanta, a cold email sending tool, so we see a lot of campaigns flow through, and the zero-reply ones almost always break at the same layers. Debug in this order, not the reverse:
- Are you even in the inbox?
Dead simple check: how many auto-replies did you get? OOO messages, "no longer with the company," etc. Across campaigns on our platform, a normal B2B send gets automated responses on 1-4% of emails no matter how bad the copy is. Zero auto-replies = you're in spam, full stop. Rewriting your opener does nothing while you're in the spam folder.
- Is your list actually good?
Pull 20 random prospects and be honest: do they actually have the problem? Can they buy? Any reason to care right now? If most fail, your "list" is just a broad Apollo filter dump. Best email ever written still gets 0 replies from people who don't have the problem.
- THEN copy.
Under 125 words, change one thing at a time, and don't judge anything on less than ~150-200 prospects or you're just reading tea leaves.
Bonus tells from our data: hard bounces over 2-3% = dirty list. Bounces under 0.1% on an unverified list = catch-all domains, your data is fake-clean.
Zero replies is actually a gift. It tells you exactly one layer is broken, so find it before touching the words.
