I’ve been “collecting” for a bit over 18 years. Mostly searching for my perfect watch, which is a fun exercise in futility.
My most worn watches tend to be round, 3 or 4 hand (GMT) with date complication, black dials, on bracelets. Mostly sleepers in terms of brand and wouldn’t be noticed.
I have bought and sold maybe another few dozen. Orients (great but 15 years ago didn’t have the same quality feel with things like solid end links and ceramic bezels), Seikos (bad value proposition for), vintage pieces (too hit and miss with movements), coloured dials (tend not to be worn), and a couple custom dial modded watches (interesting, but usually a bit rough) stand out but ultimately I let them go.
I have experimented with all sorts of straps, even making a few of my own when that was all the rage, but ultimately I’m a bracelet guy.
I’d be interested to hear your thoughts!
Images are in the following order:
Top of the box:
Most worn are the Sinn 556i with Steel Reef EasyLink, Steinhart Ocean 39 GMT, and Hamilton KFA 38 with AR coated crystal on the Uncle bracelet. The other 556 has a black MOP dial.
Bottom of the box:
Mostly watches that have been passed down to me and/or have some sort of sentimental attachment (eg Omega DeVille). Mostly never worn.
Chinese watches:
The San Martin SN0116 GMT (blue) is the only one of these that gets worn regularly. The sterile submariner was my beater through 2014-2017 predating when I think Chinese watches got really good.
Watches of questionable authenticity:
Mostly bought as a way to try out different styles early on. They hardly ever get worn apart from the DJ36.
