For those who dont know, which is most people, Rueben Guss was the first manufacturers of insanely overpriced 'audiophile' speaker systems. Their speakers potentially went up to 100,000 USD in the 80s and early 90s.
Their systems were wild with 20+ drivers in each cabinet. The 'System 1' had 12 15 inch drivers in each cabinet with 102 drivers total. For reference the biggest vintage speaker that actually has proof of its existence is the Electro-Voice Patrician 800. It stands at 51 inches tall and 300+ pounds and that only holds 1 30 inch and 1 12 inch woofer, so imagine 12 15 inches in one cab.
There is also the 'Custom Monitor' Model. It supposedly had 24 15 inch woofers, 48 5 inch midranges, 32 inch domes, and 100 peizos. Weighing in at 2200 pounds per channel. This is the model that went for 100,000 USD
In Lindenhurst, New York there is what looks to be a pawn shop with a pair in relatively good shape. I dont know the exact model but it seems to be missing a pair of satellites that sit on a stand next to the system (img. 2)
I believe this to be the only existing pair of rueben guss speakers today and the only proof of their existence other than a few catalogue posts
Does anybody have any experience with this brand? Ever heard them?
This guy had incredible music taste and digging through his bins of cds was awesome. im assuming bros dead since its an estate sale so RIP
11 Speakers in each cabinet. 2 12 inch woofers, a horn piezole tweeter and 8 papers tweeter. These are the ultimate American kabuki speakers
Got this from someone who didnt use them for 20 plus years. They were sitting in a cool dry place for that time but old tech is still susceptible to damage even when not in use and stored properly.
The scott linear turntable and other cheap linear trackers are a nightmare to work on. Thankfully the turntable gods blessed me as this unit only needed new grease as the old grease turned to glue and prevent it from running at all.
MCS works completely fine other than the occasional pot scratch which is impressive for not having been cleaned for so long. Also the tuner buttons are completely frozen, ill get around to fixing that later but not many people, including myself, don't listen to radio so it doesn't matter too much to me.
Also yes these receivers were sold at JCpenny but i promise they are absolute beasts.
Hey yall. Got these off FBM for $150. Also got some weird audiophile speaker cables with them that i may or may not post about.
-Paradigm Monitor 9 v.5
-Paradigm CC-190 v.5
Paradigm is a Canadian brand that makes bright and detailed speakers, their lower end stuff is mainly focused on home theater units. They always look very nice and sound good given you have a nice sub.
This particular line of units was released in the late 2000's.
They feature a very prominent condom-esque midrange. These towers are a '2.5 way' design, meaning the condom woofer will dig as deep as the LF dedicated drivers but will also reach the midrange frequencies needed to make a full range speaker.
The midrange is in its own ported enclosure separate from the bottom two drivers which i think is pretty cool, you dont see that too often.
These sound incredibly detailed in common paradigm fashion. They are tall and the tweeters reach ear-level in most listening positions. The 3-way center channel does incredible work pushing out dialogue even with its current terrible placement. The grills are also magnetic which eliminates ugly grill pegs on the face of the speaker.
If you can find this series and you need good towers id get them, Paradigm doesn't disappoint
Had an incredible find at an estate sale recently. 2 barzilay speaker cabinets in box with everything needed to assemble it. Plus a stereo console with untouched cutouts. Speaker grills, speaker cloth, port tubes and insulation all there.
Feeling conflicted if i should sell or build them myself. i would never have the opportunity to make my own barzilay ever again... but the selling price may reflect that point aswell... dont know. But its so cool having this piece of audio history
I for sure have my work cut out for me. Missing the amplifier thing that has the VU meters, Somebody else bought it without even thinking i guess. Has cables and case, though.
How bad are these heads? Apologies if my question seems dumb. I tried getting a sense of what bad and good tape heads look like online but i don't know much about to reel to reel equipment.
Looking forward to getting this up and working as ive been trying to get into reel to reel for a while.
Also, im assuming the amplifier is essential for playback so i am sourcing one off ebay.
There were more upstairs i didnt get pictures of.
Sansuis, kenwoods, JBLS, Acoustic researches, realistics, pioneers.
Not even tested. Got them down to $130 but i didnt have a multimeter so i didnt bother
They werent kidding when they said germans over-engineered things.
Telefunken TL-700, Made in germany in the 70s. Wont be redoing these crossovers anytime soon as it costs nearly $200 to do it right.
Stereo only amp at 120 watts into 8 ohms, 0.05% THD and Damping factor of 50. 5 disc changer and quartz lock tuner. Plus a cassette deck.
Power meters, motorized volume, full remote control of all units. And my favorite- a yamaha loudness knob 😍
