Just starting out

I’ve been told I’m getting the family heirloom treadle Singer (unknown model at this time but I hope to fix that soon). So before that I’ve wanted a practice machine and finally found this one. 1922 99k with knee bar. With a little cleaning it works beautifully! I think the biggest things will be a little wood work and rewiring the electrical components with Chicago pins.

Biggest question I haven’t found online… is even the longest stitch length ridiculously short by today’s standards? It looks like the feed dogs move through their full range but the stitch length is still short compared to my modern machines.

Small rant

I’m happy to find this subreddit! I got my sewing machine to repair camping gear but then quickly jumped into MYOG.

Now I’m trying to get back to (or actually get to in the first place) repairing things it has been so hard to find anything about simple, hidden, and strong repairs with most everything focusing on visible mending. I’m happy for people that like the visible mending appearance but I just want to repair my clothing simply.

Anyways happy to see there is a subreddit. I’ve already darned some pants (not invisible because I used the thread I had).

If anyone knows good resources from books (probably preferred) to YouTube channels or blogs I’m here for them!

Prewash Cordura?

I’ve been going back and forth between making bags and making quilts. Quilters love to argue about prewashing cotton because it shrinks. That got me thinking…would that be a consideration for technical fabrics especially cordura which is my preferred bag material. I’m starting to make more bags for friends and if someone washes it… would it change how it looks from shrinking?
