A friend of mine got a "nudge letter" from HMRC about undeclared income and asked me to help figure out what to do. How seriously should this be taken? Is it just a routine automated check, or does it usually signal something more serious is already underway?

Anyone had HMRC query a home office expense claim on Self Assessment? What kind of evidence did they actually ask for, and how detailed did you have to get?
