Rolling Stone - Signals review

Here is Rolling Stone’s 2-star review of Signals when it came out:

On their twelfth album, Rush makes a strong argument for the view that advanced technology is not necessarily the same thing as progress. Unfortunately, they do so largely by screwing up. Although Signals is chockablock with state-of-the-studio gadgetry, ranging from the requisite banks of synthesizers to the latest in digital recording and mixing, none of these electronic add-ons enhances the group’s music. If anything, Rush emerges from this jungle of wires and gizmos sounding duller than ever.

The band’s chief error seems to have been emphasizing synthesizers at the expense of Alex Lifeson’s guitar. Because Rush’s concept of synthesized sound is so narrow — consisting mainly of the vague whooshing sounds that are the aural equivalent of dry-ice fog — the band tends to sound like it is trapped in wads of lint. With no edge to work against, Geddy Lee’s congested vocals float through the songs like swamp gas. Ultimately, it’s up to drummer Neil Peart’s hyperkinetic thrashing to hold the performances together.

Ironically, Rush falls into this technological morass on an album that is otherwise their most poppish yet. By and large, the songs on Signals are tuneful and unencumbered by the sort of gratuitous flash that made previous albums seem like clearinghouses for worn-out art-rock licks. Even so, it’s mostly a wasted effort, and nearly all of Rush’s Signals come across as static.

What is the point of offering free member tickets for specific dates and times

New member here. On member FAQ at https://rockhall.com/membership-faq/ it says ”no advanced admission ticket is required” for members, which to me means I can just show up at any time without any reservation, flash my digital id, and walk straight In.

I had the following email exchange with membership dept that confirms this:

me:

>can you please confirm, if two unrelated members show up at 11am on a busy day, there will be zero difference in their experience getting into the museum, even though member #1 has done nothing in advance, and member #2 has “secured their ticket” by logging onto your ticketing site and ordering a free ticket for 11am

membership dept response:

>Correct.

So my question is, why does the ticketing site have an option for free member tickets which requires specific dates and times to be selected, if those tickets are 100% unnecessary ? Is it so you can print it out as a souvenir of your visit ?

First hand account of Hunter West chairlift accident Feb 5, 1978. A runaway lift.

I was on the chairlift at Hunter Mountain on Feb 5, 1978 when there was a brake failure on the Hunter West lift. The chairlift stopped and then reversed direction and went backward faster and faster until it finally stopped. It traveled at least the distance between two towers before it stopped, gaining speed each second. I don't know if the brakes finally caught, or if the cable jammed and caused it to finally stop.

We were lowered to the ground with ropes by the ski patrol. I skied to the bottom and saw the carnage. There was blood on the snow. Chairs at the bottom were all bent up because they whipped around the bullwheel at high speed. The back roof of the lift under the bottom bullwheel was torn off. We heard sirens and saw ambulances. They had a bus there to take us around to the front side of the mountain. There was only one lift on that side of the mountain in those years.

My two best friends were also on the lift, on the chair in front of me. We were two thirds up the lift, so not in immediate danger of being whipped around the bottom bullwheel.

Hunter West was closed the rest of the season.

Twenty years later when my brother skied there and mentioned this accident, the employee adamantly denied it even happened.

Here is the only news report of the incident I was able to find. I take issue with the statement in this news report that says no one was seriously injured. If the hospital lists a patient in "fair" condition, that's a serious injury. I heard some people broke bones jumping from the lift.

Someone reported on here they were knocked unconscious going around the bullwheel at the bottom, and another tore a kidney.

I'd love to hear from others who were on this lift at the time.

Chairlift Accident Injures Dozen At Hunter Mountain Ski Resort

SPECIAL TO THE NEW YORK TIMES FEB. 6, 1978

A chairlift accident injured more than a dozen people yesterday at the Hunter Mountain Ski Resort in the northern Catskills, according to the State Police in Hunter. N.Y. None of the victims was seriously injured. Seven of them were taken to three hospitals in the area, where they were reported as in fair to good condition.

The police said that chairs on the resort's 3,800-foot "Z-lift" apparently rolled backward, tossing a number of skiers to the snow below. A spokesman for the resort, Paul Pepe, said the lift was capable of carrying 1,000 skier an hour up 1,400-foot rise. He added he did not know how many were on the lift at the time.

recs for ski mountain (anywhere in the world) with good week-long freestyle programs

Normally our kids are in a season-long freestyle program, but we can't do that this year for various reasons. I was hoping to find two or three ski mountains that have high quality, week-long programs that aren't insanely expensive. We will have the IKON pass so a preference for IKON mountains, but doubt we can be picky.

We did this a couple of winters ago in Laax, Switzerland, which was awesome but expensive (though ski lessons even in Switzerland seem much more affordable than the US). Can anyone recommend places we could try? Kids are young and neither expert or beginners, e.g., the 11 year old can backflip and has done front flips on airbags, but hasn't tried corks. The 9 year old is solid on 20ft jumps, can do 360s on smaller ones, and was sliding his first rails last season.

Grateful for any tips or pointers of hills/mountains to look into.

Seeking passport photographer who makes house calls

My elderly father is house-bound in west side of Vancouver and I am trying to find an inexpensive passport photographer who will come to his house and meets all the requirements of stamping the studio name on the back of the photo, etc. (He needs the passport for identification not travel)

Was Fly By Night LP ever issued on Anthem records with lyrics ?

My understanding is 200g reissue in 2015 had cool sleeve with Neil’s hand drawn lyrics as in the attached picture, but my old Anthem LP I bought new around 1977 came with a plain white sleeve. Was this record ever issued with lyrics back in the day on Anthem (not Mercury) records ? Paper sleeve or gatefold ? Gatefold would be so cool …

Interpretation of the end of 2112

Couple things I have wondered about the end of 2112 for many decades now

  1. Is the narrator dead ? In the Soliloquy section, there is the lyric “my lifeblood spills over” which seems pretty definitive, and the liner notes say “I can no longer live under the control of the Federation, but there is no other place to go. My last hope is that with my death I may pass into the world of my dream, and know peace at last”. However in the official animated video, the narrator is seen alive and emerging from the cave in the subsequent Grand Finale section.

  2. Are the new overlords who have overthrown the Solar Federation going to change things for the better, or is it going to be a case of “meet the new boss, same as the old boss”. The ominous chant of “we have assumed control” makes me think they have the same authoritarian tendencies as the regime they have just overthrown.
