Christians who are also masons

I am not a member of a Masonic lodge or the like, and nor am I intending to explore doing so, but I have heard different views on whether being a Mason is compatible with being a Christian.

I have been pondering the question because of a particular musician whose work I have always liked, including one particular album dedicated to his Christian faith. I was a little surprised later to hear that he was also a Mason and, as I understand it, he was later subjected to criticism from Christians as well as Masons.

Any views here that members are open to expressing and discussing?

AI use to assist in Bible reading

Just to see what it would come up with, I prompted Claude AI (Sonnet 4.6) to produce a modernised paraphrase of Matthew 23:1:36.

I’m not suggesting that this is any way a reliable translation or that it should be considered to be God’s word, but it has prompted my thinking in considering the passage’s relevance and application in a contemporary setting.

This is most definitely NOT intended to be read as a personal message to anyone here. I’m just interested in whether others have used this approach in conjunction with their regular Bible reading to explore passages?

Here it is, if anyone is interested:

Matthew 23:1-36 — A Modern Paraphrase

Jesus addressed the crowd and his followers:
“The religious scholars and church leaders sit in positions of legitimate authority, so follow their correct teaching — but don’t copy how they live, because they don’t practice what they preach. They pile crushing expectations on everyone else but won’t lift a finger to help carry the load. Everything they do is for show — they wear the biggest crosses, carry the most prominent Bibles, grab the front-row seats, love being called ‘Pastor’ or ‘Doctor’ on social media.

Don’t let titles define your identity. You have one Teacher, and you’re all equals as brothers and sisters. Don’t put any human being in the place that belongs to God alone. True greatness in my kingdom looks like serving others. Promote yourself and you’ll be brought low; humble yourself and you’ll be lifted up.

Woe to you, religious performers — you slam the door of God’s kingdom in people’s faces. You won’t go in yourselves, and you block others who are trying.

Woe to you — you’ll cross an ocean to win one convert, then shape them into someone twice as spiritually toxic as you are.

Woe to you, blind guides — you build elaborate theological loopholes around your promises, as if some oaths count and others don’t. Every oath ultimately points back to God, so take your words seriously.

Woe to you — you obsess over minor religious details while ignoring what actually matters: justice, mercy, and faithfulness. You’ll debate theology all day and walk past someone being treated unjustly. You filter your coffee through a fine mesh and swallow a camel whole.

Woe to you — you look polished and put-together on the outside, but inside you’re consumed by greed and self-indulgence. Clean up the inside first, and the outside will follow.

Woe to you — you’re like a beautifully decorated mausoleum: impressive from the street, but full of death inside. You perform righteousness publicly while harboring corruption within.

Woe to you — you build monuments to the prophets your ancestors killed, saying, ‘We would never have done that.’ But you’re already plotting the same thing. Go ahead then — finish what your fathers started. You snakes. How do you expect to escape God’s judgment?

I’m sending you messengers — teachers, truth-tellers, faithful witnesses. You’ll fire them, slander them, drive them out of your communities, and hunt them down. And so the account will be settled — from the very first innocent blood ever shed, all the way to the last. I’m telling you plainly: this generation will answer for it.”

I have heard it said my Orthodox brethren have a different conception of ‘Hell’ than that which is commonly understood in the Latin and western churches. I was hoping that someone could share their understanding? I’m not wishing to challenge anyone’s views or start an argument, I’m just interested in whether what I have heard is correct.
