Using my cpap on a long haul flight

I found a lot of information online about whether you can use a CPAP on an airplane, but not much from people who had actually done it. So after using mine on Lufthansa long haul, I figured I’d post the setup and actual experience.

I used a ResMed AirMini with a Freedom CPAP Battery 160 (160 Wh). Lufthansa approved the CPAP and battery ahead of the trip through their Medical Operation Center/Special Service and added it to my reservation.

Their requirements were basically:
-CPAP needed to run from the battery (don’t count on aircraft power)
-Humidifier off (AirMini uses humidity pucks so no issue)
-Battery had to be carried onboard
-They recommended having the AirMini technical manual with me
-The CPAP was allowed in addition to my normal carry-on allowance

Actually using it onboard was much easier than getting through the airport with it.

Leaving Chicago, the international document checker saw the CPAP and battery and sent me over to another group to have them reviewed. Those folks were actually more impressed by how small the CPAP was and how much capacity the battery had than anything else. They looked everything over, said it was fine, and waved me on.

The problem was that the original document checker hadn’t stamped my documents showing that my international documents had been checked. I didn’t find that out until I was in line to board the 747. So I had to get out of the boarding line, go back and get the missing stamp, and ended up at the back of the line.

So the CPAP and 160 Wh battery weren’t really the problem. Getting sent off for the extra review just caused the normal document-checking process to get missed.

Once onboard, it was completely uneventful.
This picture is from Lufthansa 747-8 business class on the upper deck. I made a little 3D printed bracket that hangs the AirMini from the upper deck storage compartment. It wasn’t really about saving space (there’s plenty up there), it just put the machine in a good spot and made the hose much less awkward. The battery sat on the floor below it.

With the seat flat, I slept with it just like I would anywhere else and got actual sleep. I had read that the AirMini was louder than a normal CPAP, but on the plane I couldn’t hear it at all over the normal ambient noise of the cabin. I didn’t actually realize how much louder it was until I used it later in a very quiet hotel room.

One thing I’d change if I were doing this in coach: use a much shorter hose if you can. The standard hose is pretty long and even in business class I found myself dealing with more hose than I needed. In an economy seat, I think all that extra hose would be a pain.

So yes, you really can sleep on a plane with a CPAP. Get the airline approval ahead of time, bring an appropriate battery rather than depending on seat power, and be prepared for the airport process to be more complicated than actually using the thing.
Hopefully this helps someone else trying to figure out what actually using a CPAP on a long-haul flight is like.

Visiting for 2 weeks: first impression

I’m here for two weeks helping my company from the US set up a GCC. Looking to hire a bunch of engineers, some senior leadership.

Staying at the Lela Palace and spent the weekend sightseeing. I am really impressed. Everyone is so friendly. The foods are delicious. The environment is so lush. It’s hard to explain to people who I’m trying to relay it to back home. Pictures don’t do it justice. Looking forward to my time here. Just wanted to say you guys have a lovely city however, traffic is insanity.

On this Day in 1865

OnThisDay in 1865, a legendary shootout between Wild Bill Hickok and Davis Tutt took place in Springfield, Missouri.

Born in 1837, James B. Hickok earned a reputation as a dangerous gunslinger, resulting in the nickname “Wild Bill.” During the Civil War, he served as a scout for the Union.

Wild Bill Hickok was staying in Springfield in the months following the Civil War, and his frequent gambling led to the famed shootout. Davis Tutt, a former Confederate soldier from Arkansas, was a gambler who also resided in Springfield at the war’s end. Tensions between the two boiled over regarding a debt. Tutt claimed that Hickok owed him $35. Hickok claimed it was $25. To cover the difference, Tutt took Hickok’s watch as collateral, an insult that Wild Bill would not let go unanswered. He threatened violence if Tutt continued wearing the stolen watch. Tutt refused to return the watch, leading to the dramatic public showdown.

The shootout itself became the template for the classic Wild West quick-draw duel. Hickok and Tutt stood in the town square, and both men drew and fired their revolvers nearly at once. Tutt’s shot missed. Wild Bill’s did not. He struck Tutt in the chest, and the gambler died at the scene.

Hickok was arrested days after the shootout and stood trial for manslaughter on August 3rd. There was no question as to how Davis Tutt died. The question was whether the shooting was premeditated or if Hickok was reasonably defending himself. After quick deliberations, the jury ruled that Wild Bill was not guilty. The idea that a stolen watch could serve as a justification for homicide fit well in the growing legend of the Wild West.

The story of the shootout spread across the country in an 1867 edition of Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, which turned the gunslinger into a celebrity. In the years following the shootout, Wild Bill served as a marshal in Kansas, got into more shootouts, and, of course, continued to gamble.

In 1876, the Wild West legend met his end at a poker table in the Dakota Territory when another disgruntled gambler, Jack McCall, shot him in the head. The hand Hickok was said to be holding at the time, black aces and eights with a mystery fifth card, is now known as the dead man’s hand.

Second monthly r/springfieldMO meetup results

One more intrepid redditor is missing from the photo. Topics of discussion included cats (or course), community choir, dimly lit garage man cave conversions, moving here, interactions with the police, and cleaning our post histories…

The kids in attendance developed a complicated economy based on flower petals and rocks.

If you missed this one, look for the next one on the fourth Saturday of the month. We are entertaining moving to a different location to see if we get a little more attendance, but we had fun anyways.

Meetup on Saturday (TOMORROW) at 5 PM at Mother's Brewing Company

Reminder: the monthly meetup is tomorrow at 5:00 PM at Mother’s Brewing Company.

We had a great time at the first meetup. We shared a few drinks, met some new people, and proved that local redditors look suspiciously normal in real life.

A lot of folks mentioned they missed the first round, so we’re trying to make this a regular fourth Saturday thing. The plan is to meet on the fourth Saturday of every month at Mother’s Brewing Company.

A few details:

When: Tomorrow at 5:00 PM
Where: Mother’s Brewing Company, 215 S Grant
Look for us in the Back Yard if the weather is nice. If it rains or the weather is gross, we’ll move inside to the main taproom. Either way, there will be a sign so folks can find the group.

Note: it's best to park along Walnut. The entrance can be confusing, it's through the chain link gate on the south west corner of the building. There's arrows painted on the grain silos pointing towards the tap room.

Families are welcome. Mother’s has a great backyard setup with a playground and plenty of room for kids to run around, so feel free to bring the family.

This is casual and low-pressure. No agenda. Drop in, grab a drink, and meet some fellow redditors. You can stay for ten minutes or hang out all evening.

Full disclosure... I am apparently bad at managing my own personal calendar, so I can only host for a short window tomorrow. I’ll be there at the designated time to help get everyone connected, and then folks can keep hanging out as long as they want.

House rules are simple:

Be respectful.

Sharing your Reddit username is completely optional.

Comment below if you plan to stop by so we can get a rough headcount to let the staff know what to expect.

West College Street Corridor Historical Survey Public Meeting, Tuesday 6/23 at 6:30 [public Facebook event link]

The City has engaged Southfield, Michigan-based Loggia Preservation, to conduct an intensive-level historic resource survey of West College from Grant Avenue to Scenic Avenue/Chestnut Expressway starting the week of June 22, culminating with a final report in March 2027.

The survey area falls within the boundaries of the West Central Neighborhood Alliance and the Westside Neighborhood Betterment Association.

The purpose of the survey is to document the architectural and historical significance of individual structures as well as the survey area and to evaluate eligibility for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places and local landmark designation, said Loggia Preservation’s Cassandra Talley.

A public meeting is planned for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 23 at Resurrection Church, 545 S. Broadway Ave., to provide details about the survey process and ask residents and business owners to share photos and memories. Once the survey is complete, property owners and the Landmarks Board have the option to seek historic designation individually or as a district.

Reminder: r/SpringfieldMO Meetup is TOMORROW (Saturday 5/23) at 5 PM!

Just a quick heads-up to bring this back to the top of the feed: the meetup is happening tomorrow. Look for the printed meetup sign (it matches the artwork in this post) to find the group.

The Logistics:

  • Weather Plan: It is definitely going to rain, so we are staying dry inside. Look for us in the main taproom

if it’s raining.

  • If our group gets big enough, we will migrate back into the Barrel Room.

    Otherwise we will be outside.

Bonus Tomorrow: Mother's is also hosting a native plant sale at the same time, so you can grab some local flora while you're there.

The Vibe: Low-pressure, casual, and completely agenda-free. The only official item on the docket is to crowdsource the exact coordinates of the next mysterious boom generator (that's a joke).

Mother’s is family-friendly, username sharing is entirely optional, and the only real rule is to keep things cool and respectful. Drop a comment below if you think you’ll stop by so we can give the staff a rough heads-up on numbers. See you tomorrow!

r/SpringfieldMO Meetup - 5 PM on Saturday 5/23 at Mother's Brewing Company Back Yard

Hey folks, after kicking the idea around for a while, I figured it might be fun to do an actual r/springfieldmo meetup and see what happens.

So here goes.

We’ll be meeting up Saturday, May 23rd at 5:00 PM at the Back Yard at Mother’s Brewing Company (215 S Grant is the address but the backyard and taproom entrance are off Walnut).

Mother’s has a good outdoor setup, yard games, fire pits, plenty of space, and it feels like a pretty easy low-pressure place to hang out for a bit.

No agenda, no presentations, no weird networking exercises. Just a chance to meet some fellow Springfield redditors in real life, discuss the latest mysterious booms, complain about traffic on Glenstone, debate local food takes, and prove we are all actual humans.

Depending on turnout, there may also be a completely scientific tug-of-war to finally settle whether Mexican Villa is good or a crime against humanity. (That's a joke)

Feel free to come by for 10 minutes or stay the whole evening.

A couple quick notes:

  • Be cool
  • Don’t make things weird
  • Public meetup, respectful behavior expected
  • Username sharing is totally optional

If this goes well maybe we’ll make it a recurring thing.

If it goes poorly we'll never speak of it again.

Comment if you’re thinking about coming so I can warn Mother’s roughly how many redditors will be attempting to touch their grass at the same time.

Springfield, we hear you.

Loud vehicles have become a big quality-of-life frustration across our neighborhoods, especially late at night. We're launching a new “Hear Something, Say Something” campaign to help tackle the problem together.

If you catch a vehicle creating excessive noise in violation of City Code Sec. 78-116, you can now report it at HearSomethingSGF.com.

To be considered for review, your complaint submission must include:

• The date, time and location of the violation
• A video with clear audio of the excessive noise
• The complete license plate must be visible and legible

Your video gives SPD what it needs to take administrative action, including issuing a $100 civil penalty based on citizen-submitted evidence.

Chief Paul Williams said it best: “This campaign gives our community a direct role in holding vehicle owners accountable.”

Springfield deserves peaceful streets. Thank you for helping us keep our neighborhoods safe, calm, and livable for everyone.
