How a small Led Zeppelin obsession turned into an infographic.

I was twelve years old when I got Led Zeppelin II.

My father gave me the record. I don't remember exactly why. I only know that he loved music and spent much of his life collecting vinyl records. Maybe it was simply his way of sharing that passion with me. Or maybe he already knew I'd love it.

At home we had a Grundig Studio 111, a wooden turntable console that sat in the living room like a piece of family furniture. I put the record on, lowered the needle onto Side A, and Whole Lotta Love started playing.

At the time, I had no idea what hard rock was. I didn't know who Jimmy Page was. I certainly didn't know that guitar intro would become one of the most iconic openings in rock history.

But something sounded different from that moment on.

The band that stayed

Over the years I discovered new music, new bands, new sounds. Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Rush, The Beatles, and many others.

Much later I found Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and Robert Johnson. That's when I realized how much of Led Zeppelin's musical language came from them. I also discovered the debates about appropriation and the plagiarism controversies that still surround the band today.

Back then, though, I knew none of that.

I only knew I had never heard a guitar sound like that before.

And there was something else.

Robert Plant seemed to sing the word "baby" all the time.

The count

That memory eventually became an infographic.

How many times did Robert Plant actually sing "baby" throughout Led Zeppelin's career?

It sounded like a silly question.

But the numbers told a story I wasn't expecting.

Track by track. Album by album. I used the official lyrics as my reference and counted every occurrence of both "baby" and "babe".

The final tally was 386 occurrences:
318 "baby" and 68 "babe".

What the numbers reveal

The distribution isn't random. That's where the story begins.

The first two albums, both released in 1969, account for 130 occurrences. It's the band's rawest, bluesiest period. Led Zeppelin II alone contains 68, with The Lemon Song repeating "baby" 22 times.

Then comes the surprise.

Led Zeppelin III almost abandons the word altogether. Only twelve occurrences remain. The shift mirrors the band's move toward a more acoustic and folk-oriented sound. As the blues fades into the background, so does "baby".

Years later, the word reaches its highest point on Presence, with 74 occurrences. Candy Store Rock alone contains 36, almost as if the band were consciously playing with the classic vocabulary of the blues.

Even I wasn't expecting that.

What counting can't measure

Counting how many times Led Zeppelin sings "baby" is a completely unnecessary exercise.

Maybe that's exactly why it was worth doing.

The numbers reveal a pattern, but they can't explain what happens every time Robert Plant sings that word. It rarely sounds like a simple term of affection. It's tension. Desire. A language inherited from the blues and transformed into something unmistakably Led Zeppelin.

Four decades after hearing that first LP, I discovered that my memory had been right all along.

Robert Plant really did sing "baby" all the time.

What I never imagined was that one day it would become an infographic.

Como fã da banda há décadas, eu sempre tive a impressão de que essa palavra aparecia o tempo todo nas letras. Era quase uma marca registrada. Mas uma coisa é a impressão. Outra é sentar, ouvir, conferir e contar.

Então eu contei.

Faixa por faixa. Álbum por álbum.

O resultado foi melhor do que eu esperava. A contagem mostrou que o "baby" não aparece por acaso: ele acompanha a própria trajetória da banda. Está por toda parte nos dois primeiros discos, quase desaparece em Led Zeppelin III, volta a ganhar força em Presence e atinge seu auge em "Candy Store Rock", com 36 ocorrências em uma única música.

No fim, uma palavra que parecia apenas um clichê do blues acabou revelando um retrato curioso da evolução musical do Led Zeppelin.

É exatamente esse tipo de pergunta improvável que gosto de transformar em gráfico.
