Investing strategy

I am a Canadian Muslim, new to investing.

I have my reservation about the scholarly opinion about debt/asset ratio for investing in stocks. This is my personal opinion and I’m sure people would disagree.

My question is, are commodity backed ETFs, specifically precious metals, ok to invest in? To my understanding they hold physical metals in vaults which is reassuring. I understand the growth potential is limited by I’m not looking for growth more than just hedging against inflation.

Would love to hear people’s thoughts on this and if these are also problematic.

Thank you in advance.

I am defeated

We invited a family friend on a visitor visa, understanding they’d go back home after. Upon arrival they claimed asylum for political reasons and fear of persecution. This was obviously wrong. Importantly, this woman’s husband is chief of police of the city they live in and if they were prosecuted, it would be by the police that her husband is the chief of. One son also back home.

Anyway we reported the matter to CBSA and provided proof. Seeing that nothing happened, we reached out to our MP. Still nothing.

After being paid 800 per person per month (2 people, mother and the son) for 3 years in addition to other benefit (healthcare, free TTC passes etc) they have been approved for PR today.

I don’t know what else we could’ve done. These judges don’t think how come her husband is still head of the police? A simple Google search would have brought that up.

Anyway, the system is broken and trying to fix it is not helping.

Tourist vis refugee claim

I am seeing this more and more, especially after tightening refugee laws coming to effect whereby people making refugee claim after being in Canada more than a year are rejected. Now they bring their family members (parents of “international student” for example) and they claim refugee upon arrival.
This opens door for them to also stay because they get incorporated into the family’s file.
This gives all of them free healthcare, full job access and free money in all sorts of subsidies.

I think tourist visa refugee claims should be outright rejected unless the person is a well known figure who suffered oppression, or they told the Canadian embassy beforehand about their oppression and plan to claim asylum.

I’m sick of these old people coming to basically spend their retirement on our people’s back while also having lived a comfortable life back home, probably oppressing others. This game needs to stop.
