Ran Software Update via GUI, repo errors only

Ran Software Update via GUI, repo errors only

Just ran an update using the Software Updater and it is giving errors which looks to be the NVIDIA repos not reachable.

I also tried in the terminal and it gives the similar error.

I don't remember adding or installing custom repos for the Nvidia drivers as I was just using the "additional drivers" tab in Software & Updates via GUI.

I try to run the update again, but this time I unchecked all related to NVIDIA drivers. Which broke the Nvidia drivers (which I believe is because of the kernel update).

Anyone having the issue right now? I just wanted to check if the specific links below is down for anyone else or I have to make changes on my system to get the latest drivers or any Nvidia drivers at all.

How to safely update/upgrade Fedora 44 KDE?

I've had Fedora 44 KDE for about a week now and so far I have been loving it.
Today, I decided to run a quick dnf upgrade and it download a bunch of updates. I rebooted and was greeted by a black screen with just my mouse cursor -- not going to the desktop at all.

Looks like the upgrade updated the kernel to 7.0.9-202.fc44.x86_64 which I guess broke something -- so doing a quick research from my phone these steps fixed my issue

On the black screen with the mouse cursor only

- Press Control+ALT+F3
-Login with your creds
-run the below command
sudo akmods --rebuild --force
-reboot

Now this kind of concerns me and wanted to know if this is a normal thing with linux?
I'm really new to linux and was wondering what can I do the prevent doing such workarounds and lessen my anxiety when doing upgrades.

EDIT: I have an nvidia rtx 5070 which looks like the kernel upgrade broke the driver

How to manage updates/upgrades after kernel install from mainline (Kubuntu 26.04)?

Trying out Kubuntu 26.04 LTS that came with 7.0.0-15-generic kernel and was having issues with playing Dota 2 (native install from Steam). It makes random frame drops and freezing in-game. I have an Nvidia RTX 5070 and tried different drivers from 580 to 595 and still no luck.

After doing some research, I read that 7.0.0-15 was buggy and I had to upgrade to 7.0.1+ for these frame drop issues.

So I updated to 7.0.6 from mainline using the Kernel Manager GUI and this INSTANTLY fixed all the problems. I also saw this fixes the copy fail + dirty frag vulnerabilities which is why I chose this.

But now I wonder how do you manage the updates/upgrades after doing this action?

I usually just go "sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade" whenever I need to update my system. I'm not sure what will happen if I do this in the future. Will it roll back to 7.0.0.-15 or a different version supplied by the distro?

I saw there was a "lock" in the kernel manager GUI which I didn't want to check as I wasn't sure what it will do.

Tips? Thanks!

Notification Setting Keeps rechecking itself

Been using ZorionOS for a week now (from Windows) and I have been lovin it so far.

I setup Zorin Connect and really really like it. I was playing around with the notifications just to see what things will do, and If I don't like it, I can just revert it back.

Except ... after I checked "Show Message Content on Lock Screen" .. which actually worked, but I really didn't like it so I went back to the setting to uncheck it.

It keeps rechecking itself. All other Zorin Connect notifications can be checked/unchecked (it sticks) .. except for this.

I checked the other app notifications too and uncheck/rechecking them works fine. The issue only happens to this specific option.

If I turn off "Lock Screen Notifications" which is right above problematic toggle, it will turn it both off fine. If I recheck Lock Screen Notifications again, both of them gets checked and I'm back to the issue.

Is there a way for me to turn this off? Or can anyone suggest what troubleshooting steps I can do

Fractional Scaling causing Dota 2 (native) to only run at 1440p instead of 4K

Hello,

Testing out Zorin OS 18.1 (wayland) and since I have a 4k monitor, I had to set the scale to 200% which is too big for my liking.

So I enabled Fractional Scaling and set it to 150% and everything looks perfect.

I installed Steam + Dota 2 (native). Upon launching the steam client, I can already tell that it is not crisp and looks off. Opening Dota 2 confirms it, I can only set it 1440p instead of the native 4k resolution of my monitor. No option for me to choose 4k.

So I tried to disable the Fractional Scaling. Set the scale to 200%. Reopened Steam and Dota 2 and now it works at 4k. So I can confirm that Fractional Scaling is the culprit as to why I can't run Dota 2 on 4k.

I really like to enable Fractional Scaling and setting it up as 150%. I'm a very casual gamer and I only play a few games of Dota a day. It would be great not to jump into hoops to disable Fractional scaling to play the game, then enable it again right after.

Is there an easy way to force steam or Dota 2 not to use or bypass Fractional Scaling? Or maybe force the game to run at 4k instead?

Thanks!

My hardware specs:
Ryzen 9700x
RTX 5070
64gb RAM
Samsung G80SD (connected via HDMI 2.1)
Zorin 18.1
Using Nvidia Driver (open kernel) metapackage from nvidia-driver-595-open (proprietary, tested)

I currently have Zorin 18.1 and Windows 11 on dual boot (two different SSDs). I plan to use Vmware Workstation Pro on both of them and would like to have my 3rd SSD to be exclusive for these VMs (.vmdk files).

So when I boot to either OS, I can open VMWare and just use the same exact VMs.

What is the best file system I should format my 3rd SSD? Was thinking exFAT but it looks to be frowned upon.

Thinking of doing NTFS, but I'm not sure if that will work with VMware linux as I need to read/write on those VMs.

Any suggestions?
