thestar.comEffect of Alternative Minimum Tax on billionaires in Canada
Recently there's been a lot of talk about how we need to tax billionaires more.
Canada has its fair share of billionaires (87 at last count IIRC) and I understand we have one centi billionaire.
Canada also has the AMT, which has been around for a couple of decades now (since I was in law school in the early 2000's).
I was never a tax lawyer, but I have heard that the way that some billionaires avoid paying any taxes is to borrow against their wealth and live off the borrowed money, instead of receiving income.
This should work to avoid taxes in Canada, but I wonder if the AMT has any impact on it.
Is there anyone who actually understands or works with the AMT here who can comment on this?
Does the AMT extract a fairer share of tax from the wealthiest Canadian or does it have no effect whatsoever?
