How and why?

I promise this post isn’t rage bait. I’ve only been listening to AFI for about 6 months. I am a middle aged punk enthusiast who feels like I found treasure when I discovered their earlier work (everything up to The Art). How I missed them initially is a long story and not interesting. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy everything prior to Sing The Sorrow. For most, everything from then on is peak AFI. I just can’t seem to wrap my head around what they put out the last 25 years. They are gifted artists and I don’t feel that’s even debatable. But, it’s almost like they turned on a dime and just, didn’t really sound like AFI anymore. Their most recent album is interesting to say the least. It couldn’t be further removed from what they sounded like in 1997 with the same members. I guess where I have difficulty understanding the transition is although I am much older than I was in 1997 I essentially love the same music. I’ve evolved. Gotten older. Became a more mellow and introspective person. But, fuck. Punk rock is just in my blood. Until I fall off this mortal coil. As a non musician, their last few albums kind of, I donno, feel atmospheric and meandering. Just curious about what others feel as they have been on my radar for such a short time.

To preface this, I am a long time punk fan firmly entrenched in middle age. Loved the genre since I was 13. Recently, I discovered early AFI (how the fuck did I never listen to them?). I can go into a long boring story on how I was busy with life from 1992 until the early 2000s but that’s not the point of where I am headed with this. What band and/or albums have you recently discovered which for whatever reason you never gave a listen to then thought, where the fuck has this been my whole life?
