Do night SLs do the PM checks too?

As per the title. I just realised we don't, and figured out that it's a bit weird (especially for 24 hour stores (mostly petrol stations now)

Why do the nights team not get the luxury of having the fridge emergency release buttons tested? Fire escape routes clear? Floor free from slip and trip hazards?

Feels like nights is a bit of an afterthought already, but I hope we have this wrong and we should actually be doing these checks

Paper Labels

I just had the misfortune of doing labels for the first time in a minute, I swear they used to be thicker.

Have they started skimping on the grammage of the label paper? It just feels like I'm either ripping or folding them so easily when trying to crease and tear them up

Stock control questions

I have a couple questions for stock controllers. We lost ours and she knew literally everything, so now the department is a bit lackluster

I have noticed we have stopped counting cages off deliveries. We don't even get the delivery note anymore. Is this a problem for you? What time do early cages hit the bookstock? If a cage says Tuesday on it, but was delivered on Monday, will it hit the bookstock at 10am Tuesday? If it gets split or worked early will it need to be marked E on 161 before you do your stock routines?

A store near me had every single fresh product transferred out because they were getting new chillers (this was a while ago). Is there a way on the stock control screen to zero all stock records for pc, mt, py etc?

And lastly is there a way on the stock control screen to change a chiller to be 4 shelves instead of three?

Customers dumping things on my blue top

One of the most infuriating things they do. I want to find their desk at work and dump a bunch of stuff on it for no reason

At least it's better than the middle of the floor I guess

Slightly weird question

Do you have drivers on standby at your depot/DC/etc? Do you ever have shifts where you just sit in the break room and do nothing?

I'm wondering because surely drivers go off sick/etc at short notice, demand can change plus or minus a few wagons depending.

Or is this what agency is for? Do they have a pool of drivers who are "on-call" or do they pick up work at short notice?

Merchandisers vs store staff

I live in the UK and I find it a bit weird that Pepsi, and other companies, merch their own stock in the US.

Over here, we might get a rep in to sign off a plan or check for availability. But the replenishment is almost all done by store staff.

I guess the difference is that almost all of our stock goes through distribution centres (warehouses/depots). But in the US your stores are massive, you get more deliveries direct.

Is the issue staffing? I'm guessing staffing a full replenishment team for a store that large takes a village, literally

Air con override

I am aware the air cons in premier inns are a bit gimped to save money. E.g. they automatically turn off (and don't turn on again) either after a certain time or at set points throughout the day/night.

I'd put it on when it's roasting, go out, and come back to a room that is still uncomfortable because the air con only stayed on for 30 minutes to an hour.

I have seen that there are ways to override the air cons (or enter "VIP" mode) on some models, usually by holding down a combination of buttons for a few seconds. I was unable to do this at my last stay. Does such a combination exist for the models premier inn uses?

How f**ked are you at the moment?

I'm seeing a lot of complaints on this subreddit recently about completely insurmountable workloads. Less from Express and seemingly more from larger stores right now.

I saw someone say their night shift handed over 40 cages that were not worked. I don't think it was a late delivery or anything, just that much not getting done and backing up.

And then at the same time, I hear some stores are moving grocery on to twilights and having nights for fresh only.

It just seems like everything is hitting the fan at the moment. And they're (not very subtly) phasing out the night shift wherever they can. I know it's hot and people are buying lots of frozen, pop/water and booze but this feels a bit different.

General sentiment among colleagues is as bad as it's ever been. People leaving and not being replaced, etc. What's happening?

Question for people who work in Extras

I attended a training course in a massive Extra store recently. I know this might seem a bit boring but it sparked a couple questions:

There was a whole "backdoor desk" in the warehouse/colleague area with keys, logbooks, I think a phone for transport etcetera. Who's on this desk? Backdoor? Team support? How big does a store need to be to have one of these? I'm guessing this is only manned at shift change or when there are deliveries/visitors

You have multiple Shift Leads on at a time, each with their own areas of responsibility (grocery/fresh/dotcom etc). Which one is duty? As in who picks up the phone, who does the mpro check?

Are there multiple phone numbers for the store? I imagine there would have to be one for the desk I mentioned. But also wouldn't it be useful if checkout staff phoned whichever person was responsible for checkouts, rather than the Shift Leader in Grocery for example?

I am a SL in a smaller store (not tiny but quite small) and it made me realise just how much time I spend signing out keys and doing all the other stuff that comes with being duty. But at the same time it seems insane coming from someone who used to be 1 on 1 in an Express regularly

The Spinners Rest or the AI Sloppers Rest?

Super disappointed with new pub The Spinners Rest as it finally has its sign up… and it’s AI generated slop.

There’s so many artists in this city, even just in ancoats, that I’m sure would have took their arm off to create a sign. There Instagram talks about “paying tribute” to the mill workers of the area, but immediately fucks over current workers in the area. Now we have to look at that piss filter chat gpt slop whenever we walk past.

What are the lights at the top?

Signals are fairly self-explanatory. What are the diagonal line of lights for? Do they indicate how points are set?

My experience with mental health and alcohol in Scotland

Posting here because you guys, and people who live near me in general, are very nice and accepting of this kind of thing. And parts of it are probably relatable to a few too many of yous.

I have not marked this post as NSFW as I feel visibility is important. But this covers some things that are quite sensitive and personal. If you are already having a bad day, this might not be the post for you.

For a multitude of reasons, my drinking has become unmanageable. Up until recently, I felt I was mostly "functional".

But when things kept happening like cancelling plans because I was drunk, sending incoherent messages, making poor financial decisions and doing other embarrassing/destructive things while drunk, I realised it's time to wake up.

And the feelings of being out of control, being unable to make and keep strong relationships, constantly saying things that are upsetting or confusing added up to where I started to resent myself. I felt like I hated the person I'd become and I wasn't deserving of any of the things I wanted.

This is when I started having quite detailed feelings that it would be easiest, or best off, if I wasn't here; and how I could go about making that happen.

If you've noticed one of your mates is missing things, is drinking much faster or much more than the rest of the group, is withdrawing or seems absent. Please just check up on them privately and openly. It won't help everyone, but it would have helped me.

I think I will miss having drinks with friends. I think I will miss having a glass of wine with my roast dinner. But alcohol isn't romantic, at least not for me. I'm not going to romantiscise it any more.

I think it's time for me to put the bottle down.

Question about "give way to oncoming traffic"

I am a full license holder but I wanted to make sure I was in the right here.

I was coming up to a somewhat narrow bridge that said "give way to oncoming traffic" with the appropriate sign. The bridge however looked wide enough for both my car and the oncoming vehicle to make it through.

I proceeded, hugging the inside, and we both fit through the gap without incident.

I am wondering however if this was the right thing to do? Should I treat such signs as "wait for oncoming traffic to pass"? Would this be the same for cyclists or motorbikes?

But on the other hand, my understanding of "give way" is basically "don't get in the way". So I should be okay? In the event they didn't stay on their side of the road and there was an accident, would I be at fault?

Sickness Absence

Question for SLs/Managers

Colleague had an accident at work, if I put a part shift under "Accident at work - excluded from %" it says "please select part shift absence"

But they obviously had an accident in the middle of their shift, and it shouldn't count against their % because it was an accident at work. It won't let me put it through though?

Next one is for a part-day sickness absence, I often select the latter end of their shift but it says "exceeds contractual hours" or similar. I think it's to do with breaks but it's not letting me put it through

I can "fix" it by doing a temporary schedule change and splitting their shift into two, so it is a full shift, but this can't be the right way and could cause issues with payroll surely

Any answers to the two questions would be good because managers are off until the end of my week

Recycling questions

How are we meant to recycle cans from the canteen and (non-confidential) paper from the offices?

We separate them into bags and put them in a general waste cage, I assumed the RSU would separate them unless they were contaminated.

But then I asked someone who works in an RSU and they said it all just goes with the general waste most of the time (unless it's like a whole cage of paper I'm guessing).

Are we meant to put (plastic) bags of labels from the office in the cardboard cages? I've seen people use whoosh bags or sandwich stuff between cardboard but it often results in a bunch of labels blowing away in the yard.

What about leaves from the yard, I've put them in a brown bag before but I'm not sure that's right?

We don't have glass boxes at my store so the contractor bin ends up full of leaves, glass, cider and wine etc and it gets manky really quickly
