Did the 700r4 have a mechanical speedo cable or is it only by wire?

I'm restoring a 64 C10 and want an overdrive transmission and would like to use a 700r4, at least I think I do. It is a 4x4 truck as well. I have a NP 241 transfer case. Are they either junk or highly in demand? I search marketplace for ones and there are very few listed. Are they a mechanical or electronic speedo or did it vary by year. My other option is a friend of mine has a 4x4 th350 but I would prefer to cruise at a lower rpm. Thanks for the insight.

Edit to add. I do also have a 4L60E green plug but I'm putting a 327 in the truck. Would I be able to run this with a stand alone and be happy with it? I figured a mechanical trans would just be easier and not excited about having to shim the flex plate or torque converter, whichever one it is.
