Walnut shooting board

Design from the book Minimalist Woodworker. The fence sits in a wedge-shaped dado and is removable with a mallet tap so you can put a long board on it and plane edge grain.

Learned a ton making it. First time cutting a dado with saw + chisel + router plane, first time laminating (for the fence) and edge gluing (for the deck). Also my first project where flat and square really mattered, so I had to get a lot better at planing (and got a second blade to put a camber on).

Boy does having a shooting board make a lot of things easier! If I did it again I would probably screw on the fence for easier adjustment instead of using this dado approach - this way adjusting the angle between the fence and the track requires recutting the dado wall, and in fact I'm 0.22° off square as is, but I called it good enough for end grain.

Simple dovetail tray

Second one of these I've made, and really happy with how it turned out. I lucked out and the base piece turned out to be naturally chatoyant. It's a small tray in ¼" walnut, intended for organising small fiddly board game components.

Still early in learning the hobby, and doing the same project twice was a great learning experience, and very satisfying to be able to directly compare and see improvements. Between the first one and this one, I leveled up my hand planing skills, built a shooting board, discovered (thanks to the shooting board) that planing end grain wasn't impossible, and got a lot more accurate with my sawing.

Double Stitch Needle: two fun interactions

  1. It stacks with Belinda, so with a gold Belinda you can 8x a minion every turn.

  2. You can use it on gold minions and farm triple rewards.

(Final board not even that impressive because my biggest minions were in my hand.)
