The King’s Knight
the knight of maidens prepares a poultice for the king
Alas, said King Arthur unto Sir Gawaine, ye have nigh slain me with the avow and promise that ye have made...
- from Le Morte d'Arthur
~
I noticed several parallels between Gawaine and Snape - both are healers, both serve a “king”, and both end up vilified in their respective stories. Both also have enormous flaws - arrogance and wrath - and equally enormous values - loyalty and strength. Gawaine, similar to Snape, was also chosen to be the original successor to Arthur’s throne, and also possibly held Excalibur.
It’s always interesting to see stories that have been “repeated” in a sense - parts that have been taken and adapted in a “modern” context - and still retain the larger than life elements of its most important characters.
The Knight and the Squire (art by me)
I was just thinking about the symbolism, particularly related to the Matter of Britain...hope you enjoy!
