NYC law school graduate and former journalist looking for public interest/policy-type work

Hi everyone,

I graduated law school May 2025 and am still looking for work and am hoping folks here might be able to help me with ideas or leads. Thanks in advance!

I am primarily looking for JD-advantage/public interest/policy-type roles in the New York area, but am getting desperate and honestly am open to many different options.

I am waiting on July 2026 bar exam results, but scored a 263 on the bar exam a year ago, so just three points shy of passing in New York but high enough to pass in other states. For various reasons however, I’m not trying to move to another state right now.

I was a legal journalist for several years before law school, which sparked my interest in changing careers, so have much experience in writing about and analyzing the law. Ideally, I’d like to find a role utilizing my legal and journalism backgrounds, but I also recognize that some of those roles may be hard to come by.

Lately I’ve been struggling and very stressed trying to find something, even if it’s short term or document review, which I’m also open to.

Please let me know if, especially if you live in New York, have thoughts or suggestions on what my approach should be, any help would be greatly appreciated.

33M, just found out my Lp(a) is 229mg/dL and I'm worried

Hi everyone, I just found this sub today after getting my blood test results this morning and I'd love to hear from others who are in a similar position and get any advice or insight I can.

My doctor referred me to a cardiologist and I made an appointment for a few weeks from now.

I only just learned about lipoprotein (a) today after getting the results so I'm pretty new to this realm of heart health. But what I am reading about this measurement is not so great and has me pretty concerned...

To be clear, I'm a big believer in modern medicine and I'm sure my doctor will be able to tell me more concretely about what any next steps look like and what to do.

In the interim though, I'd love to hear from others who were able to lower their cholesterol to maybe put my mind at ease and learn about what to expect as I enter what looks like will be a pretty dramatic change in how I see my overall health and what to do about it.

My mother just had her Lp(a) tested and hers is in the 140s, so the fact that mine is dramatically higher is another reason for concern on my end.

These days I exercise a few times each week and walk some each day, but that's a relatively newer development (within the past six months).

Please let me know if I need to provide any other info and thanks in advance!

Height: 5' 7"

Weight: ~210

Results copied below:

Lipoprotein (a): 229

Cholesterol Total: 201

Triglyceride: 142

HDL Cholesterol: 47

LDL Cholesterol: 129

Non-HDL Cholesterol: 155

Chol HDL Ratio: 4.3

After years of CRHing, finally found silver!

After casually coin roll hunting for years, I finally found a silver quarter! Also found a Jamaican coin and a few album fillers so altogether happy with this box.

For the old heads who failed before: how much is test performance a mental thing versus preparedness?

Hi Krusty Krew, like the title says I’m hoping to get some perspective from those who took the test at least twice. More specifically, by how much was your test performance a result of calmness and being level headed, as opposed to relying solely on your preparation?

Put a little differently, if you eventually passed, to what degree do you credit that with being less stressed as opposed to knowing more this time around?

Obviously we all need to have a solid understanding of what’s being tested, but beyond that, I’m wondering to what degree not being anxious will have on me and hoping if I can be more zen so to speak, I can avoid making dumb mistakes, pace myself well and perhaps even pass.

If you drive a silver SUV parked on the street in western Astoria, you left your trunk wide open

Edit: crisis over, owner came and drove off. Back to your evening doom scroll everyone.

Not giving more details about location in case a bad actor sees this but yeah.

The vehicle’s trunk has been open for the last 90 minutes at least and no one is nearby (I can see it from my bedroom window). Car is big enough that someone could crawl from the trunk to get inside the car.

Posting this here on the off chance my neighbor is on Reddit as I don’t know who the car belongs to and don’t want to touch someone else’s car.

I hope the right person sees this!

Rediscovered this half dollar from my childhood collection

I was digging through an old box that used to contain my childhood coin collection and found this one at the bottom of it. I know it’s 40% silver, I’m just appreciative of finding collectible coins I had clearly forgotten about!

Any advice on how to get a JD advantage job?

Hi everyone, like the title says I'm looking for advice on how to get a decent job in New York post-law school.

I graduated a year ago and unfortunately just barely failed the bar exam twice (came within five points of passing both times). I'm registered for the July exam, but am also thinking of withdrawing to instead focus on getting an income again and letting my finances recover somewhat. Needless to say, I'm in a bit of a unique (and deeply frustrating) set of circumstances at the moment.

Unfortunately, I think I need to focus on getting a job over studying right now. However, I've been applying for jobs for months and am getting nowhere. Law clerk jobs feel closed off to me, I'm getting rejected from paralegal roles, and now am looking at any JD advantage jobs in the NYC area. I didn't go to a T14 school, but also have about six years of somewhat relevant work experience from my career before law school.

If anyone has career advice, encouragement, or just good vibes to send my way that'd be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hi neighbors! Like the title says, does anyone know what this is in the East River near Socrates park? I first noticed it last night and it appears to be anchored in the water.

To be clear, I’m not salty about it by any means, just curious!

Hi all, can anyone please help me better understand my score breakdown and where and how I need to improve? First image is from F26 in New York, second image is from J25.

I'm probably not understanding how the scores are put together, but it appears that my MEEs alone increased noticeably, MPTs dipped somewhat, but my written score decreased from July to February.

Basically, did the curve mess up my score? I don't want to count on that to pass the bar exam, but it'd be reassuring going into July that I know a thing or two and don't have to reinvent the wheel in terms of studying.

Any insight would be helpful, thanks in advance!
