Looking for help building my first competitive 2,000-point Necron army

Hi everyone,

I’ve finally decided to start Necrons as my main 40K army, and I’m now looking to build my first 2,000-point list.

I’m still relatively new to competitive 40K, so I’m looking for a list that is beginner-friendly but genuinely competitive. My goal is not just to have a strong list for a few games, but to build a solid core that I can learn with and expand over time.

Ideally, I’m looking for a list that:

  • is competitive at 2,000 points
  • is relatively straightforward to learn
  • has good durability and board control
  • has a mix of strong melee and ranged options
  • gives me enough flexibility to play different matchups
  • uses units that are good long-term investments
  • can be expanded or adapted into other competitive lists later
  • has enough depth that I can eventually become a strong competitive player with the army

I particularly like the idea of durable warrior bricks, powerful characters and a few big threats such as C’tan, but I’m open to different approaches if there are better competitive options.

Since I’m starting from scratch, I’d also really appreciate advice on which boxes/units I should buy first and which units I should avoid buying if they are currently less useful competitively.

I’m not looking for a hyper-optimized tournament list that will become obsolete after the next balance update. I’d rather have a stable, well-rounded competitive foundation that I can build my collection around.

Thanks in advance!

Worriying moving forward with daemons (plague legion)

I've been playing Warhammer 40k for about a year now and have had the chance to try out several different armies through my friends.

Ever since I got interested in the hobby, Chaos Daemons have always been the faction that appeals to me the most aesthetically.

I recently sold my first army and am currently looking for something new. Right now, I'm torn between Death Guard and Chaos Daemons, especially the Nurgle-themed Plague Legion detachment, which I absolutely love.

This brings me to my questions:

While I was happy to hear that Chaos Daemons will remain a standalone faction in 11th Edition, I still have a strange feeling in the back of my mind about investing in them as my only main army. I'm worried that, sooner or later, Games Workshop might stop properly supporting them with new models, rules, or future codex releases.

More specifically, I'm concerned that Daemons could eventually be split up and folded into their respective Chaos Space Marine factions, making them no longer playable as a standalone army.

Because of that, I'm especially unsure about building a pure Nurgle Daemon army (using the Plague Legion detachment), even though that's what I would enjoy the most.

Can you help me put this into perspective?

I'm not primarily a competitive tournament player, but my local gaming group plays at a fairly high level, and I'd like to continue being able to keep up in the future. At the same time, I want to invest in an army without constantly worrying that Games Workshop might eventually pull the plug on it.

What are your thoughts on the long-term future of Chaos Daemons as a standalone faction, and would you feel comfortable investing heavily into a pure Nurgle Daemon army today?
