Is anyone else WAY better at playing original riffs than they are at playing other people’s songs?

Within the past year or so I picked up the guitar again after not playing for almost a decade (Since high school really). I was pretty good back then, but not out of this world good. When I would play in HS, I would almost always just practice playing Bullet for my Valentine, or Avenged Sevenfold songs (to the best of my ability) and never really wrote much of my own stuff.

Since I started playing again, I have mainly been focusing on writing original songs and riffs as well as playing a lot of the same songs from artists I liked back then. One thing I noticed is that I can’t really play super advanced songs that well when it’s another person’s music, however with my own stuff I can write pretty intricate/advanced riffs and play them perfectly pretty quickly. I reckon there is no way in hell I’d be able to play these riffs if I was reading tabs off of a website or something.

I’m guessing it has a lot to do with me spending more time on my own stuff this go around, but I still find it interesting. Anyone else experience this? Does anyone have any tips on how to get better at covering riffs? I have a metronome coming in the mail and hopefully that helps me hone in my skills.

First big purchase after a rather grisly drug addiction 😊

I spent the last almost two years chasing opioids/7oh. Everything of value that I owned eventually went to the pawn shop to fuel my dependency, including all of my old guitars, amps, etc. This purchase marks the start of me rebuilding my old life, and slowly getting back to normal after a traumatic couple of years. I gotta say, it’s going to feel great pinching pennies this next week because I spent my funds on a guitar and not because I spent it on poison like every other paycheck.

Time to turn pain into art!

All of them voted against same sex marriage last year for those who are wondering.

Specifically for my North Fargo/Harwood/Reile’s Acres peeps.

I know that it was a hot button issue last year when it came up, with the most popular rhetoric around the topic being “Vote them out.” Well the time is here, and we really need to follow through when it comes to these people, and show them that we will not tolerate them taking away our rights.

Even my conservative Dad claimed he would vote against anyone who voted for HCR3013. Now it is time for me to have the conversation with him to encourage him to stick to his word. I encourage anyone else who is sick of these politicians trying to take us backwards to do the same with their loved ones.

Remember just because it’s not your freedom they are coming for does NOT mean you should stay silent. Because eventually these people will come for something that affects you and your loved ones.
