The Birthday Guest
Every year on my daughter’s birthday, we set a plate for her at dinner.
She died when she was six.
Tonight, the plate was empty, but a note appeared beneath it:
“Thanks for keeping Mom distracted while I buried her.”
I looked at my wife.
She was smiling.
And suddenly I realized I’d never had a daughter.
