Thoughts on Solon seeking to subject convicted corrupt officials to death by firing squad?

This could certainly deter corruption, but it could also lead to deadly consequences. Many high-ranking corrupt officials allegedly maintain private armed groups, political militias, or heavily armed loyalists. Attempting to arrest or enforce warrants against them under the threat of execution could escalate into violent resistance, endangering law enforcers, witnesses, judges, and even civilians.

Beyond deterrence, the larger concern becomes institutional integrity: if the justice system is imperfect, politicized, or vulnerable to abuse, the irreversible nature of execution raises the risk of wrongful convictions being used as political weapons. In that sense, the debate is not only about punishment, but also about whether the state possesses enough legal credibility, enforcement capacity, and safeguards to wield such extreme power responsibly.

House Bill No. 11211, or the “Death Penalty for Corruption Act,” is a controversial proposal filed by Khymer Adan Olaso that seeks to impose death by firing squad on public officials convicted of major corruption offenses. The bill covers crimes such as plunder involving ₱50 million or more, malversation of public funds, and grave graft and corruption, applying to all government officials from the President down to barangay officials and uniformed personnel. It also includes judicial safeguards, requiring conviction by the Sandiganbayan, automatic review and affirmation by the Supreme Court of the Philippines, and exhaustion of all legal remedies before any execution can be carried out.

They idolize this psychopath making death threats against the President on live television

When I saw this, I gasped in awe. Why do even people support this clearly psychopathic person. The evidence and the demonic aura of this person is already right on their faces. What the hell, the supporters of such have already lost their wits.

Assumption College has reportedly removed the portrait of Loren Legarda from its Wall of Empowered Women

LOOK: Assumption College has reportedly removed the portrait of Loren Legarda from its Wall of Empowered Women following criticism from the Assumption Student Council over her role in the recent Senate leadership change.

The student body said Legarda’s actions no longer aligned with the school’s values, particularly after she backed the leadership bid that replaced Senate President Tito Sotto with Alan Peter Cayetano.

Thoughts that the “masa” grow tired of intellectualism and turned to a novel way of smart-shaming?

TLDR:

This essay suggests that growing visible inequality between the Filipino "masa" and higher income groups creates emotional tension through the concept of "loob" which develops into "sama ng loob" as a response to perceived lack of dignity and recognition.

This emotional pressure then appears in public discourse as smart shaming where intellectual language and analytical framing are dismissed as a way of flattening perceived social hierarchy. In political spaces like the DDS and Kakampink divide this dynamic reinforces mutual labeling of elitism and ignorance producing fragmented identities within both the "masa" and intellectual groups shaped by recognition, resentment, and disengagement.

*****

This is an observation and not in any way conclusive or dogmatic.

Long post ahead. This was stuck in my notes since early this year.

The "Filipino masa" generally refers to the broad working class and lower income majority in the Philippines. The term comes from the Spanish word "masa" meaning masses and is commonly used in politics, media, and everyday conversation to describe ordinary Filipinos especially those outside elite or highly educated circles.

It is not a precise demographic category. Depending on context it can refer to:

  1. Workers farmers drivers vendors laborers

  2. Lower and middle income households

  3. People seen as "common citizens" versus elites

  4. The voting majority in populist political discussions

The term can sometimes sound neutral affectionate political or even patronizing depending on how it is used.

The gap between the "masa" and the rich can be seen in how many low income Filipinos still struggle to afford basic needs while those with surplus income comfortably spend on non essentials like travel gadgets and leisure. Over time this divide has become more visible as wages for essential workers lag behind the rising cost of living while higher income groups benefit more from economic growth investments and asset gains.

We can connect this through the Filipino concept of "loob" where the inner self is shaped not only by personal identity but by lived social reality. As the gap between the "masa" and those with surplus income becomes more visible especially when basic needs remain difficult while others freely spend on non-essentials it produces "sama-ng-loob" a bottled up moral and emotional weight formed by perceived imbalance in dignity recognition and fairness.

This "sama-ng-loob" does not remain purely internal. It leaks into discourse as a reaction against perceived intellectual and social hierarchy. One of its observable expressions in Filipino public space is what is now commonly recognized as smart-shaming.

Smart-shaming appears when intellectual framing itself becomes the target of dismissal rather than engagement. Examples include "eh di ikaw na matalino", "overthinker lang yan", or "pa-intellectual", where the argument is flattened not through counter argument but through rejection of intellectual posture itself. In other cases English or technical speech is reduced to "nosebleed", and detailed explanation is dismissed as "pinapahaba lang", signaling resistance to perceived superiority in language or reasoning.

In this framing smart-shaming is not simply anti-intellectualism in isolation but a social leveling mechanism emerging from accumulated "sama-ng-loob" within unequal conditions of speech, status, and recognition.

From here the political dimension becomes clearer in the contemporary DDS and Kakampink divide. The DDS narrative often positions itself as the authentic "masa-voice" while framing Kakampinks as elitist, academic, or disconnected. On the other hand Kakampink discourse often leans heavily on institutional critique, data, and moral intellectual positioning while framing DDS supporters as misinformed or lacking analytical rigor.

This produces a loop:

Perceived elite framing leads to "sama-ng-loob" that leads to rejection of intellectual posture through smart-shaming; then

Perceived dismissal of reasoning leads to reinforcement of "masa-representation" identity; then

Reinforcement of opposing intellectual identity on the other side

Simply:

Perceived elite framing

leads to sama ng loob

leads to smart shaming or rejection of intellectual posture

leads to stronger intellectual identity on the other side

leads back to perceived elite framing again

The result is not a simple binary of intelligence versus ignorance but a feedback system where "loob" is continuously shaped by perceived recognition or dismissal.

In this structure we can describe a split within the "masa" itself:

"MASA-sama-ang-loob" politically expressive identity reactive more likely to align with populist representation

"MASA-walang-pake" disengaged exhausted or depoliticized by repeated cycles of frustration

At the same time intellectual identity also fragments:

"matatalinong-mayabang" perceived as socially detached or condescending

"matatalinong-tulog" disengaged despite awareness

"matatalinong-loob" rare alignment of intelligence with empathetic grounding in "loob"

From this perspective what is unfolding is not simply a decline in intelligence or a rise in anti-intellectualism but a structural emotional cycle where inequality produces "loob" tension which then reorganizes discourse identity and political alignment.

This in turn results in the institutionalization of the "masa" as "masasama ang loob" which results in the popularity of what the intellectuals vehemently oppose.

That's what's happening now. For me.

Bakit maraming traydor at magnanakaw?

  1. Mura at masustansyang pagkain, mura at disenteng bahay

  2. Matalino at Mababait na anak

  4. Mga mamamayang nag-iisip at iniintindi bawat naririnig at nakikita

  12. Isang Pilipinas na may respeto sa manggagawa

My observations before, during and after the Senate Chaos

These are just my observations regarding the recent gunfire incident at the Senate and the strange events happening all at once. I could be mistaken on some details, and this is simply based on what I personally saw, heard, and followed through various live feeds and reports.

This is the timeline as I remember it:

  1. Initial reports circulated that the OSAA was going to arrest someone at the Senate, but no clear details were given.

  2. The Senate complex became flooded with media personnel and civilians. Armed individuals were visible around the area, presumably government forces. Reports mentioned the presence of the NBI, Marines, PNP, and OSAA.

  3. Suddenly, there were reports and visuals of drilling into a wall, though it was unclear who was doing it or why.

  4. Sporadic gunshots were then heard, not a single burst, but scattered shots over a period of time. Panic spread quickly, and some uniformed personnel instructed media and civilians to fall back.

  5. Even reporters covering the scene appeared unable to confirm what was really happening.

  6. Senator Cayetano went live on Facebook and stated that they were “under attack.”

  7. Senator Padilla later emerged from the direction where the gunshots were reportedly heard. He appeared calm. Reporter Victoria Tulad followed him, but according to her, Padilla warned that it was dangerous to continue to the next floor, so she retreated.

  8. Reports then came out saying SILG Remulla was on his way to the Senate to secure the area.

  9. Cayetano went live again and mentioned that the President had spoken with him.

  10. PNP Chief Nartatez later arrived with his escorts.

  11. Media personnel were eventually instructed to leave the Senate premises, while several vehicles were seen exiting the vicinity.

  12. The NBI Chief publicly denied that NBI agents were inside the building, saying no official order had been given for deployment there.

  13. Remulla arrived, entered the Senate building, and met with the Majority Senators inside.

  14. Multiple live feeds were circulating online. In one feed, Remulla could be seen talking with senators, although it was difficult to understand the discussion.

  15. Eventually, everyone came out and an impromptu press conference was held, but many details still remained unclear. Authorities said an investigation was underway.

  16. The President reportedly assured Cayetano that the perpetrators were not government forces.

  17. The situation gradually calmed down.

  18. Shortly after, security at Villamor Airbase was reportedly tightened.

  19. Reports claimed that Senators Bato and Padilla were staying in their quarters, although I did not personally see visuals confirming this.

  20. Some reports also claimed that live ammunition, not blanks, had been used.

  21. The President delivers his statement about it, reiterating that the government had nothing to do with it.

  22. SOCO arrives at the scene.

Again, this timeline may not be perfect, and I may have missed some important details.

What also stood out to me was that widespread brownouts were reportedly happening across different parts of the country during the incident due to a supposed red alert on energy supply. At the same time, Trump had reportedly arrived in China, and protesters outside the Senate were attempting to breach barricades near the perimeter. Senator Sotto was reportedly harrased while he got out alone to his vehicle, furious that despite the police visibility, no one assisted or protected him.

There are also reports saying that someone warned the Senators ahead of time that an incident will happen soon. Some said their were helicopters hovering around the building.

The Articles of Impeachment are reportedly now at the Senate.

Maybe these events are unrelated, maybe not. But taken together, the entire situation felt surreal and unusually chaotic.

Did I miss anything important? Did anyone else notice details that didn’t seem right? How did you personally make sense of the chaos, and what theories do you think are plausible based on what we currently know?

Statement of Senator Risa Hontiveros after Senate Ruckus

The Senate is going viral for the wrong reasons. That affects everything and everyone: majority and minority, Senate employees, and most of all, the work that we do for the Filipino people. Walang panalo sa ganyan.

Nanawagan ako sa bagong liderato ng Senado: We must protect the dignity and reputation of the Senate. Nawawala ang paggalang at tiwala ng taumbayan sa Senado when our powers and traditions are being misused to avoid accountability.

As always, we can disagree. We must challenge each other. But the Senate must not become a mockery in the face of the Filipino people, especially when the public is looking to us to faithfully perform our Constitutional duties.

There is always a way. There is always hope.

May krisis ngayon.

We owe the Filipino people much, much better than this.
