If you genuinely root for Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa, a disgraced, inveterately incompetent senator and fugitive who continues to embarrass the entire country on the world stage with his desperate antics to evade the ICC over the international crime charges against him, then there’s truly something wrong with you.

It's truly ironic that a former chief of the Philippine National Police, who ought to have been an exemplar of accountability and courage in law enforcement, now appears too spineless to face the very charges brought against him. He would rather endanger the public by using Senate premises to orchestrate his escape just to preserve his own skin. For a man who built his image on bravado, threats, and performative toughness, watching him scramble in fear the moment real accountability catches up to him is nothing short of pathetic.

This could certainly deter corruption, but it could also lead to deadly consequences. Many high-ranking corrupt officials allegedly maintain private armed groups, political militias, or heavily armed loyalists. Attempting to arrest or enforce warrants against them under the threat of execution could escalate into violent resistance, endangering law enforcers, witnesses, judges, and even civilians.

Beyond deterrence, the larger concern becomes institutional integrity: if the justice system is imperfect, politicized, or vulnerable to abuse, the irreversible nature of execution raises the risk of wrongful convictions being used as political weapons. In that sense, the debate is not only about punishment, but also about whether the state possesses enough legal credibility, enforcement capacity, and safeguards to wield such extreme power responsibly.

House Bill No. 11211, or the “Death Penalty for Corruption Act,” is a controversial proposal filed by Khymer Adan Olaso that seeks to impose death by firing squad on public officials convicted of major corruption offenses. The bill covers crimes such as plunder involving ₱50 million or more, malversation of public funds, and grave graft and corruption, applying to all government officials from the President down to barangay officials and uniformed personnel. It also includes judicial safeguards, requiring conviction by the Sandiganbayan, automatic review and affirmation by the Supreme Court of the Philippines, and exhaustion of all legal remedies before any execution can be carried out.
