1/8” gap around new door

How do I fill the 1/8” gap around the sides of my new door?

Wall has Safe’n’sound batting and 5/8” Quietrock drywall on both sides. Solid core door, but the jamb is sitting here with big open sides. The top is about 5/8 actually, so may just fill that with scrap quietrock.

GC recommended spray foam. Are there sound proofing spray products?

Quietrock on just one wall?

Room subdivide is in the works with a new wall. To save money, what if we just did 5/8” Quietrock on one side and regular 5/8” drywall on the other?

We’ll have Rockwool Safe’n’Sound batting.

5 pcs should to give coverage so would maybe do 3x QR, 2x basic 5/8”

Wall construction

Got a wall going up tomorrow and I want to add extra blocking to mount my future TV.

Haven’t decided on a Frame or Canvas or TCL, but very likely 55”. Right now I have a 2020 50” and it’s only got the single wall mount.

I guess I’m gonna add some 1/2” ply in a wide broad strip across three 16” OC stud bays. That sound about right for future proofing?

New wall, add a media box?

We’re subdividing the living room to add a small master bedroom. Family TV will mount on the living room side, with a soundbar and a sub. Safe n Sound Rockwool batting going in.

Will an in-wall media box behind the TV totally kill my efforts, or will the TV itself act to block some transmission through the box?

Mainly want to dull kids TV watching while we watch our own stuff (or try and sleep in a little).

Hiding the One Connect Box

Where are people sticking the One Connect?

This is the media wall I’m going for (undecided on the uppers, def not at first, anyway). I don’t really want to put it in one of the open shelves if I can avoid it (rather put my CD changer and something else there). Thinking of rigging a way to under mount it to the floating cabinet. Trying to avoid putting it in the wall (also that thing gets warm, no?)

Best deal for a 55”

Yesterday I got a 2020 50” off Marketplace for $325. It’s okay. Haven’t fully dialed it in yet by any means, but art mode isn’t impressing me much (still just looks like a TV showing me art).

I think I want a 55” after all, and newer matte display.

I had seen 2025 55” models for $699 around Beat Buy and others yesterday, and today they’re $799. Grrrr.

Anyone seeing any deals I’m missing?

Thanks!

Good deal?

How’s this deal? $500 for 55”

New to the Frame world. How’s this deal? Right size I’m looking for. Is it old old? I guess I don’t mind a deeper TV, but is it glossy? I’m only starting to differentiate the different eras and learn about edge/screen burn.

Alternatively, I know there are deals for 2025 models for about $699+tax for a 55”. Was hoping to get this one down to $400.

Building a wall, what should I plan for?

I’m subdividing my open floor plan ‘great room’ into a small mini-great room and now I’ll have a wall to mount a TV onto. Pretty set on a 2025 or earlier Frame 50-55” unit and I’m fuzzy on which years have a One Connect and which have rear ports.

To hide the wire(s) I want to plan for a channel or perhaps a small media box behind the TV, but how big and where, relative to the TV placement?

Caveat, this is a ‘temporary’ wall that may come down in 8-10 years so I won’t be running power thru it. But I will add some conduit to fish through Ethernet, speaker wires, HDMI, etc. Power will probably be supplied by some kind of extension cord through the wall that I feel good about. Edit:: would just run the device power thru the channel down to an extension soon I hide well.

Is hiding the One Connect behind the TV an ideal placement? And then I’d run HDMI extensions in-wall to the media console below? Would be nice to have one less box taking up space on a shelf or behind a cabinet door.

Slow WiFi in ADU

We’re on a family property with my family living in the ADU behind my sister’s family in the front house.

I recently fixed the shorted out cat5e running between the houses so now I’ve got us back up on the gigabit LAN running from the fiber drop in the front house.

WiFi has been one shared network using a set of original Google WiFi pucks, with the main transmitting unit upstairs at my sister’s house. Line of site is about 50ft in the air to our receiving unit in our loft. WiFi speed in our back house is only 40mbps on a good day.

What can we do to get better WiFi speeds? We like being able to go from one house to the middle shared yard and to the other house with continuous coverage. But I would be willing to go another route if it meant we’d have better speeds in our house and central yard.

Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

Budget soundbars for new home theater config?

I’m trying to level up our TV watching with a budget-friendly soundbar & rears in our small “great room”.

TL;DR: Should I bother getting a Playbar for $175 on Craigslist? Will my hardwired Amp+speakers be delayed compared to the soundbar?

Context: We’re subdividing our great room (kitchen + living room) into a smaller one to create an extra bedroom. New great room will finally have a bare wall perfect for a mounted TV and sound bar. On a budget because of the minor construction, and buying a TV. New room will be 15’x20’.

Current system has been an Amp with a pair of Kplisch bookshelves on top of the kitchen cabinets, and a powered sub next to my record cabinet. System has been entirely for music, but now I’m excited to get a good/decent TV setup in the mix. Because of the new room configuration I’ll probably swap my powered sub for a Sub Mini, but could still keep the Amp/Klipsch set up. TV wall is directly opposite the kitchen cabinets w/speakers — about 19’ away; speakers are 5’ above sofa level.

I’m eyeing a Samsung Frame 50” TV. I’ll finally be able to watch while cooking, and the smaller room I’m hoping will have better, fuller sound for music.

Couple questions:

  • Any issues grouping the Amp system with the soundbar I get? either for TV or music? Any sound delay issues?

  • I’m seeing Craigslist ads for older Playbars for $175, possibly a Beam (gen 1) for $185, Beam (gen 2) for $400, Arc (not Ultra) for $400. $200 budget sounds great for me right now, (considering I’m probably in for a Sub Mini and a pair of Ace headphones for late night solo watching.) Which is better, old Playbar, Beam gen 1, or a new Ray? Not opposed to upgrading later.

  • Any reason I should ditch the Amp + bookshelves and swap for a used set of Play:1s or Play:3s, or Symfonisk bookshelf or lamp, or Ones? Not gonna spring for Eras just yet.

  • I want my wife and kids to be able to turn on the TV and start watching easily. The Amp never worked well for that with our older setup. I’m trusting a soundbar will just do that, no app needed?

  • Anything else I should consider?

NxD Roots

Wife and I went Wednesday 6/10 and I'm so glad we did. Was a '90s ska kid and loved the pop blend of Tragic Kingdom, but I really fell in love with No Doubt listening to the first album and Beacon Street. I traded bootleg tapes on early newsgroup forums, hunted for old shows and TV spots, collected old songs – I was super into them. I was always so sad about John Spence, and about Eric leaving. Even up to going this week and walking the Experience, I was hunting for snippets of the older lineup(s). The old show fliers were amazing to me, and I used to go see all of the same bands on the bills with them – Skeletones, Let's Go Bowling, Blue Beat Stompers.

I love that Total Hate has stayed on the set list for years and years. And during Gwen's selfie-hug fest with the fans, one session went so long that the band got all the way through playing Ghost Town, looked at each other, then Adrian started banging the intro to Squeal and I couldn't believe it. Even though it was a 25 second interstitial version, it was a bucket list moment to hear my favorite ND song live.

Later in the show, there was a video of the band reflecting on their nearly 40 years together and Tony talked about how hard it was early on – "John died in our first year together, and Eric left a few years later." But all the years since then have been the real story of the band and their friendships and their bond. I spent a lot of time being nostalgic for a version of the band that was foundational, but John and Eric left the band, and Tony, Tom, Gwen, Adrian, Gabe and Stephen pressed on and did amazing things.

I still love the first albums and what they meant to me as I became a big fan, but I found a new, deep appreciation for everything the others did since then.

So glad I got to go. So special for an old fan like me.

No fees at box office?

Planning to see No Doubt on Wed 6/10. All pics I’ve seen make it look like there is tons of space on the floor (ie, floor does not sell out?). We want GA tix.

Won’t tix be available at the box office? And are there still fees? Face value says $111 (TM adds $28 in service fees).

Anyone tried this for any non-sold out shows?

Help planning our quick 6/10 there and back trip?

Pretty pumped we pulled the trigger on Southwest flights for the Wed 6/10 show! Hoping for some tips about our tentative schedule - 17hrs in Vegas!!

Touchdown at 5:50pm, planning to stay at Linq for the tram access, $65 room and walking distance to the Experience & Sphere. We’re mid 40s, generally active, frugal, pretty sure we can make the walk, no problem.

7:30-8 Experience tix reserved, no interest in merch, just the displays.

Need a quick bite on the way to Exp/Sphere (burgers, tacos, ??)

Planning to get GA tix on StubHub (instant download), or just walk up to box office? Wife would get motion sick from the seats, we’re tall, don’t mind being in the back and moving up.

After show, walk back, take in the sights? Bellagio fountain? More late night eats? Experience pt.2?

Breakfast around 8:30am (simple/tasty/fun recommendation?)

10:50am flight — When should we catch the airtram back to the airport?

Traveling light, clothes on our backs, maybe backpacks. Or do we go ultra light, skip backpacks, go straight to dinner/Experience/Sphere from airport?? (Hotel toothbrushes?)

What am I not thinking of?

TIA!! Pumped to see NxD for our birthday-versary after 26+ years!!

We live in a 845 sq.ft. house behind my sister's 1.5 story home. New construction (both houses) with 1Gbps fiber running to the front house. The ethernet line running between the houses failed and I've had no luck repairing from either end. I have a spool of Cat 5e direct-bury I could try and rerun, but it would be a pain to get into her crawlspace and up into the network closet, and again into mine.

For the last few years my house has inched along with an old Google Wifi (AC1200) gen 1 set up. No idea if it's configured optimally or what (doesn't seem to be much to it). I've got the distributing base in the front house upstairs landing, and we're picking it up in our upstairs by a window facing that landing (more or less). Wi-fi in my house is about 40mbps, wired 60mbps. That's livable, but it can drop to a crawl – sometimes we can fix by restarting our base but occasionally I need my sister to restart hers.

>> Would appreciate some tips on how to improve the system to be more reliable for us and ideally get us some more speed with the least headache. Even when the wire between houses was working, I doubt things were set up great for us. I'll say, I like that the signal covers the patio between the houses now on the same wireless network (for streaming, Sonos control, etc). Couple scenarios in my head:

Scenario 1: Live with it

Scenario 2: Buy a newer set of bases to replace the existing, and set them up how?

Scenario 3: Suck it up and run the 5e again, but still need to replace the bases in my house?

(Captions on photos give relative placement of bases)

FWIW, the extent of my networking knowledge ends just *before* people started talking about mesh networks, generally. But as an A/V guy, I'm pretty good at plugging stuff in. Thx!
