Need some advice on the roofs of my Tortuga build

I’m making progress on the second part of Tortuga using pieces from my spare parts, and I’ve had to modify quite a lot because I didn’t have the right pieces.

I’d love to get your opinions on the roofs, especially the black one. Maybe adding some vegetation would help break up that “big black block just sitting there” look?

The problem is that I’ve already had to add vegetation to the roof on the right because I ran out of cones, so I cheated a bit by using modified bricks to attach some foliage and actually finish it.

I’m worried that adding more might make the whole thing look too busy. Or maybe I could use a different colour for the vegetation? I currently have coral, yellow, dark green and olive green leaves available.

I’d really appreciate some opinions because I’m not completely happy with how it looks right now, but I can’t quite figure out exactly what’s bothering me.

Finished rebuilding Bag End from my LEGO bulk... what's next ?

Another rebuild from my LEGO bulk. This time I recreated Bag End using only the parts I already own. It's not a perfect copy, but I tried to capture the feel of the original.

I actually decided to build it because I randomly came across a copy of The Hobbit while shopping. I'd never read any Tolkien before, and it made me want to finally give it a try. Then I remembered there had been some LEGO sets based on Middle-earth, so Bag End became my next project.

This summer I've rebuilt the Alchemist's Shop, Tortuga, and, just to change things up, the Stranger Things set... despite never having watched Stranger Things.

Now I'm starting to run out of ideas. What set would you rebuild next if you only had a big collection of random LEGO parts ? I'm mostly into medieval, fantasy, pirates, and classic adventure themes, but I'm open to any suggestions !

Tortuga challenge : no BrickLink, no problem

Rebuilding BrickLink Tortuga with only my own bricks

After rebuilding the Alchemist's Shop using only parts from my own collection (you can see it on my profile), I decided to tackle Tortuga to go with the pirate minifigures I made at the LEGO Store.

I had to modify a few sections because I was missing some pieces. So far I'm happy with the result, although I do regret using sand green on the tower. Dark bluish gray might have looked better, but I don't feel like rebuilding it all right now.

My biggest disappointment so far is the water. I don't have enough blue plates, so I just had to work with what I had.

The roof was an absolute nightmare to build, but after changing the design a bit, it became much easier and sturdier.

If I make good progress, I'll post an update if you're interested.

Undead pirate faction

My undead pirate faction. While stopping by the LEGO Store, I instantly fell in love with these torsos and heads. There weren't many available, so I grabbed what I could. Now all that's left is to build their hideout !

And that's it... I've finally finished my spare-bricks version of the Alchemist's Shop

It may be less spectacular than the original, but building with what I already had was the whole point of the challenge.

I replaced the missing potion bottle with some vegetation to break up the large grey roof, and huge thanks to the LEGO Store employee who found the last grey roof tiles for me !

It seems to be a hit with my friends, even though I'll keep improving a few details over time whenever I find better parts.

I think I'll try recreating another BrickLink Designer Program set with my spare bricks. Another adventure built on compromises, creativity, and making the most of what I have 😊

My Spare Parts Alchemist's Shop

My spare-parts version of the Alchemist's Shop is making good progress (thanks to 15 years of collecting LEGO pieces... 😅)

The second floor, however, was a real challenge. I was missing a lot of parts, or simply didn't have enough of them, so I spent about three hours building, taking things apart, searching through drawers, and trying different solutions.

Here are a few photos of the current progress... and that's it for today.

The next update will probably be the roof—if I can come up with something decent. I already know the giant potion bottle is probably impossible to recreate without buying extra parts, but I've decided not to buy a single piece for this personal challenge.

At worst, the roof won't look much like the original, but that's okay. I've had a lot of fun, rediscovered plenty of forgotten pieces, and that's really what this project is all about.

I also realize I never could have made this much progress if I hadn't spent the last few weeks sorting almost all of my collection. As a bonus, I've included a photo of my storage setup !

Has anyone else here tried building this set using only the parts they already own ?

I already know which set I'll tackle next with my spare bricks. Even though it forces you to make compromises, I find this kind of challenge incredibly satisfying.

Tortie or calico ?

This is Potiku, a little female cat who was rescued from a trash bin when she wasn't even a month old. She's now 2 years old, and I'm still wondering whether she's a tortie or a calico !

My previous queen of the cats didn't have a single white hair, she was a 100% long-haired tortie. My heart broke when she left us after 14 years of love. Then, just a few weeks later, Potiku came into my life with her tiny white paws.

Thank you in advance for your thoughts !

Update: Building the Alchemist's Shop with Spare Bricks

Some of you may have seen my previous post where I explained that I was trying to recreate the Alchemist's Shop using only the LEGO pieces from my own collection.

I've made some progress, the half-timbered walls were an absolute nightmare because I was missing so many specific pieces. Sometimes I found a good substitute... sometimes I just couldn't. 😅

Oh well, I'm sticking with the challenge. I want to see how far I can get before I genuinely can't continue without buying more parts.

From spare bricks to Alchemist's Shop

I decided to build the Alchemist's Shop using only the LEGO pieces from my own collection. So far, it's going pretty well, but I think it's going to get much more challenging later on !

I'll probably make a quick trip to the LEGO Pick a Brick wall for a few specific sections. Funny enough, I stopped by just before starting this project without knowing what I'd need, and it actually helped me with quite a few parts !

I have a feeling recreating the big potion bottle will be impossible, but overall I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out. There are still a few mismatched details to fix (like the window cornices at the back of the building), but so far the build has been incredibly satisfying.

Has anyone else tried building this set using only their own spare bricks?
