Starting my journey rebuilding a 2 stroke 717!

Ok story time! So earlier this summer I decided to do something incredibly stupid but awesome. Buy a jet ski. Second to last obligatory pic of the old gal. Double whammy too, never owned anything 2 stroke before either. Judging by the first couple pics, I know what you’re thinking. I blew the thing up already. Nope! She’s a beautifully running machine. 150 psi on both cylinders, motors got oomph and the rest of the machine was well taken care of. Couple little things here and there but overall really solid.

First couple pics is my newly acquired and assembled $20 Goodwill work bench- and the 90’s craftsman box my grandma got for my dad that he never used. I’ve always wanted to tear down an engine. When I discovered this guy on fb marketplace had two 717’s he didn’t have listed, I figured it would be a perfect opportunity to learn more about the machine I own. The motor you see torn apart I already knew was completely blown up. The other one turns over smooth and I can hear compression. Compression #’s? I have no idea. But I figured that one would be the perfect candidate for a rebuild after I got some experience tearing apart the blown up one. I got both motors for $100, so even if I royally F it up, who really cares. Finally got the case apart and am starting to feel ballsy enough to crack into the second one.

Now what will I do if I actually get lucky enough to end up with a spare rebuilt 717? I actually have no idea, just doing it for fun and the experience of it. If you guys #1 have any tips for me along this journey, please let me know #2 what should I do with the motor if this all actually works out in the end? Thx!
