Thoughts on Cecil B. DeMille?

I feel he is regularly criticized and disliked by cinephiles as a filmmaker who has big spectacle but not much substance. While I don’t necessarily disagree, I really like the big spectacle he brings to his films. I feel he is a big unfairly criticized in this regard, as there are many filmmakers who have made big-budget spectacles in Hollywood, not just DeMille. I really enjoy Unconquered and Union Pacific, and obviously The Ten Commandments. I disliked The Plainsmen, and thought I liked some parts of The Crusades, certain parts are pretty ridiculous and haven’t aged very well. I also disliked the way that Richard the Lionheart was portrayed in the film. What are your thoughts on DeMille? Do you enjoy his films despite their faults? Or not really?

Do you recommend The Cobweb (1955)? (No Spoilers)

Vincente Minnelli is very hit or miss with me. I find that many of his films are style over substance. I liked The Bad and the Beautiful, Home from the Hill, The Clock, and Meet Me in St. Louis (except the Halloween parts, which felt out of place to me.) I dislike musicals, and I wasn’t a big fan of Some Came Running, Madame Bovary, and Two Weeks in Another Town, the latter of which I couldn’t even finish, and the other two I struggled to finish.

However, I love this cast. And the story seems complex and interesting. Would you recommend? How do you feel it compares to his other films?

Do you recommend this boxset for someone who loves historical epics?

I love historical epics, as they have so much sweep and scope and really immerses you into another time period and setting. Like David Lean’s films, for example. I understand this particular filmmaker makes films that also combine martial arts types of action sequences in these films. Often I find that these films have weaker characters and emotions than what are in a usual epic film. Sometimes the fight scenes are a bit unrealistic as well. I don’t necessarily want accuracy, but I want the film to feel authentic. For a lover of historical epics such as myself, would you recommend these films? In other words, do these films feel like historical epics or do they use the historical framing to tell a martial arts story? Please let me know your thoughts with no spoilers, and thank you in advance.

What does the pending Paramount-Warner Bros. merger mean for the future of the Warner Archive Collection?

The trial is set for March 2027. I am a huge fan of the Warner Archive Collection, and I am not privy to the details regarding rights, licensing, distribution, and all of the intricacies behind these mergers. Would this merger mean the end of the Warner Archive Collection releasing films on Blu-Ray? Please let me know, and thanks in advance.

Do you recommend Johnny Guitar (1954)? (No spoilers)

I love Nicholas Ray’s noirs, such as In a Lonely Place and They Live by Night. I also love Westerns. However, the story doesn’t seem to intrigue me. I love the more traditional John Ford westerns, and the more revisionist Westerns of Mann and Boetticher. It’s pretty expensive, since it’s OOP. For those who have seen it, what are your thoughts? In regards to female-led Westerns, I really like Forty Guns by Sam Fuller. I wasn’t a fan of Rancho Notorious, which is a Western Noir in Technicolor that seems to look similar to Johnny Guitar.

What is the likelihood that some of the Gainsborough Melodramas will be released on blu-ray?

I recently read about these films. I love melodrama, and I love historical costume dramas, so these films sound like they will be right up my alley. I noticed the Eclipse DVD set. Do you know if these or any others will be released on Blu-Ray, by Criterion or another label?

Underrated Western Gems on Kino Lorber?

They have many Westerns I haven’t heard of. I have some of the major releases and some minor ones, like The Gray Fox. Any others you would recommend?
