Any group bike rides near or over the Gothals?

Jersey resident here who is training for a 50 mile ride in October. I live in Cranford and regularly go over the Gothals. Today I went from my house over the Gothals and Bayonne then back. Looking for some hilly group rides

What's the plan with the gravel being spread in the lot on Orange Ave South of rosovelett Park?

Yesterday I was doing my morning 3k steps and I saw mountains of gravel in the little lot where the boy scout trailer is normally parked. People were raking them. Is the town just setting that up fo morer parking?

Smashed all my Straws records at a group ride. How much was drafting vs ego/motivation?

I'm mostly a solo rider. I joined a group ride that was 2 mile circles around a park for an hour where you're supposed to do 20 in the flats.

I've always been able to hit slightly above 20mph for short distances., but never sustained. I've been riding regularly since 2023. My second fastest 20k average is 16.1 mph.. My fastest is 19.0 from the group ride. Does drafting give you 3mph or was I just motivated by imposter syndrome going into a situation I thought was well above my capabilities?

I definitely hurt more than usual the day after a ride.

What are they doing in front of the new apartments on South Ave?

Are they doing work on the street or so they need the street for parking for construction equipment?

Les Amis de Paris-Roubaix but for Richmond terrace?

So Sunday afternoon I biked from Jersey to Manhattan via the Gothals bridge and the ferry. Maybe I'm insane but I don't get why people worry about Richmond Terrace. I'd love more bike lane but it's good enough for the level of traffic.

My one concern was a lot of gravel and glass as certain segments and of course pot holes. But the rubbish correlates with population density and a few people with brooms could solve this.

Anyway, think we can organize something whereby people sweep the street. Maybe pay some bodegas to sweep in front of their block once a day or even just let any do gooder idiot with a bike helmet to borrow a broom and pail.

If we become a big enough presence we could sell merch and raise money and get permission to paint more yellow circles where bikes are allowed on the sidewalk by the Gothals. Maybe even get permission to fill some potholes with cold patch.

But anyway let's start with sweeping up gravel and glass and seeing if sanitation will pick up bags from our efforts.

Who has jurisdiction on Clifton Street to make a reverse direction bike lane on this one way stretch approaching the Gothals

So I live in Cranford and while I'm only going back and forth over the Gothals bike lane for training and not a commute, it's a commonl commute to NYC route and therefore relevant here.

I'm glad there are mixed bike/walk paths on this approach, but I assume most cyclists prefer to stay on the streets rather than that park. That stretch of Clifton that turns one way of wide and mostly empty. A single direction bike land in the opposite direction so I have one less place to dismount would save cyclists time.

Is this an Elizabeth thing or a state government thing?

How does IBM develop new managers from ICs?

I'm a band 9 that joined through an acquisition. I came over as a manager of managers with 3 directs and 4 in-directs. As part of the blue washing my team grew and was flattened. I'm learning that the rule at IBM is a manager needs 5 directs.

I'm a seasoned manager that enjoys developing talent and had the privilege of good training and mentoring as a manager at my acquired employer. However, that also meant starting as a baby manager with only 2 directs and slowly growing organically from there. Can that kind of thing happen at IBM? Also, being a manager at IBM is like being a director at my old company in terms of responsibilities. Being responsible for raises and promotions as opposed to just advocating for them as well as a lot more admin work.

I'm not complaining for myself. I'm a seasoned manager, and I've been trying to move up. I accept the responsibility. However, I feel like if I joined IBM in 2019 directly, as opposed to my company that got bought out, there is no way I could have become the manager I am today under the IBM system. I'm asking because I would like to know how to guide ICs that report to me to become baby managers and grow just like someone took a chance on me during covid. How do I best go about turning an IC into a baby manager under the IBM rules and having them and their directs succeed?

Cannot center rear brake on Peugeot Premier

These are old style non-recessed center bolts. They won't accept a modern recessed bolt style brake.

Basically I can't center them. I centered the front brake and it's basically perfect. The right side always leans close and rubs slightly no matter how many times I take them off and reattach them. I've even companies l completely taken apart the brake separating the two arms.

. I can ride the bike safe enough, but I want better after all the other work I put into it.. I'm assuming I'm missing some hardware that should lock the brake in place when I tighten it.

Is there some trick I should try? Anything to watch out for when I buy non-recessed center mounting brakes? ChatGPT is suggesting Weinmann. The ones on eBay look like they would fit.

Apparently charging up a long climb is a bad idea!

I'm a 45 year old "self taught" road cyclist that has been attempting to be a serious cyclist since summer of 2023. So I do stupid things. Anyway I signed up for a 50 mile multiple sclerosis charity race in October. Not super worried about this distance, totally worried about the climb from the Alpine Marina in NJ to route 9W. I live in a flat-ish area (Cranford, NJ) and its hard to practice on hills.

Anyway, most hills by me are short so I charge and build up momentum to get over them, and it works out pretty great because I don't get winded before the descent. Today I tried that on the Gothals Bridge, which is a climb I generally don't have a problem with because I never attempted it at full speed, since its narrow and I don't want to hit a pedestrian.

So, today I bike to the bridge and really go for it and . . . well I made it, but way more tired than when I normally climb it.

Anyway I'm going to go on a quest to find more hills because I don't have the time to drive to 9w every weekend to climb from the Marina. Next time I do get there I will try that 12% climb on my daughter's Trek 7300 that I setup 3x10 with an 11-36T on the back, because I only made it halfway of that climb with my road bike that is like 28 on the largest read cog and 32 on the front. Hopefully I can get stronger by October because it would suck to have to walk my bike up that hill or drop a couple hundred on a new drivetrain on my road bike when my tight groupset is more than good enough for what I rid the rest of the year.

Elizabethown Gas Portal outage resolved, but needed to manually pay my bill

This morning I get an email that my gas bill payment was rejected. Plenty of money in my bank account. I go to log in on my phone and it looks like I have no ACH accounts setup. Weird. Been working since about June 2014 when I moved in. I try logging in on my desktop because I'm not typing a whole ass routing and account number on my phone. I'm civilized. I get a down for maintenance when I login.

It started working again, and the account was listed. I was able to pay my bill. However, please make sure if your gas bill is due today that it was paid.

I once got into a situation where PSEG tried to take money out of my account and I didn't have it there, and then PSEG just stopped trying to ACH my electric bill for 3 months and I got a letter from then. Then I had to pay my electric bill in person at Walgreens via western union until I had the time to speak to a damn human to ask to be allowed to ACH again. That was my fault, but I would hate for someone who had serious problems and a job that didn't allow them to make 1 hour phone calls during the day getting screwed over. Its one thing to punish my work from home white collar AuDHD ass for being an idiot, but the way PSEG policy is implemented it really hurts the working poor.

Anyway, log into elizabethtown gas and check your bill status and check your email folks.

Staten Island bike lane painting Friday

Friday morning I left my house in Cranford, NJ 6am and biked across the Gothals bridge to buy sometime off Craigslist. I took the left at the port Liberty entrance not the right towards the ferry via the road that runs along they post. Unfortunately the bills have was closed as they repainted it. Can't wait for my next trip to Staten Island but it sucked that day.

I need to spend more time biking that bridge. I need to train for the 50 mile MS bike race and I need to train for the Palisades climb.

Good/cheap 24" rear rim brake wheels?

Long story short bikes were stolen, ridden hard and recovered. One was repaired. One has a wheel away out of true and I suck at truing. I'm going to give it the old college try, but is anytime close to $50 on Amazon or easy to get shipped to NJ going to be available before Tuesday or at least not too far from it so my 10 year old can bike to school if I don't manage to true this way out of true wheel?

Hopefully necessity will help me rise to this task finally but I'd like the option of throwing money/parts at this.

Kids bike stolen from OAS overnight. Found on Birchwood and orange. Any witnesses

Ok my fault for not giving them locks. My fault for not retrieving them when they got rides home. Waiting for the school to call me back about footage before I call the police.

At or around 7:40 am this morning I got to the oas parking lot on foot and found my kids bike helmets on the ground near the bike rack on the west side of the parking lot. Took a few pictures then started walking home. Called my wife to tell her to take the kids to school. At or around 7:50 my wife saw the bikes on the south west corner of Birchwood and orange. One front brake caliper was smashed on one bike and they rear brake lever was broken on the other. Frames look fine. The one we're the broken lever was ridable.

They were ridden hard. Fall damage in the handle and seats. Like incredible wear damage. How do you even break a center pull brake caliper?

Anyway, anyone on orange ave have any ring footage? Anyone walk on that corner of Birchwood Ave Orange and either see or not see the bike at a particular time frame?

Kids will be kids and this is my fault for not securing them. However, this was almost malicious the level of wear. I'd be less mad if I didn't find them and assumed they were stolen to be sold.

Having to cycle in traffic improves my mental health and makes me faster

I took a ride today and I just wasn't feeling it. Could not bring myself to break 76 RPMs. Then I heard a horn behind me. It wasn't actually intended towards me, but still when I looked back there was a Tesla (who was quite patient kept a good distance). Anyway, my brain immediately went into "do your best not to be the problem" and I was able to pedal much faster for the rest of the ride and it cleared my brain fog.

There are just some days where the only things that can make me pedal faster is a driver getting mad at me or another cyclist passing me and setting me into "pursue the predator" mode. Maybe this means I am a dopamine addicted, over stressed person with high baseline cortisol levels, but damn that kick in the ass can set me straight even if its bad for me and soceity.

Any place I can get cash for bikes?

Long story short, the household currently has one too many bikes for my wife's taste, and I had one on Craigslist. However, my 10 year old finally moved up to my 12 year olds bike and now I need to sell two bikes so I can buy my wife a particular used 26" one because at this point my wife doesn't have a bike with my 12 year old using her bike.

These are real bikes from a bike shop, not bike shaped objects from Walmart and they are under 10 years old so I want some cash. If they were older I'd donate to girls in gear or whatever.

So is there a "caxmax for bikes" where I could get $100 for a 2 year old $300 kids bike and $200 for a 3 year old $500 hybrid with a trainer and then they go down them up, replace the cables and brake fluid and sell them?

I want to be able to drive somewhere with two bikes and drive away with 0 bikes and cash
