Staying in south Bayonne for the WC, best way to get to NYC?

Hey everyone,

We’re coming to the US for the World Cup and we’ll be staying in the south part of Bayonne, near Dennis P. Collins Park. Besides the matches, we’re planning to spend a lot of time around NYC, especially Manhattan and Brooklyn.

When we booked the place, we thought using the Staten Island Ferry would be the easiest option since Staten Island looks really close on the map. But now that we’re checking the routes, we can’t really find a good way to get to the ferry terminal by public transportation from where we’ll be staying.

Is there actually no practical public transit option between south Bayonne and the Staten Island Ferry area? It feels strange because they’re so close geographically.

If there really isn’t, what would you recommend?

Would it make more sense to rent a car and drive to the Staten Island Ferry, park there for the day, and then use the ferry/subway system around NYC or just go north through Bayonne/Jersey City and use public transport into Manhattan?

We’re mainly trying to figure out what’s better in terms of price and convenience, also wondering if parking near the Staten Island Ferry is realistic for daily use.

Thanks in advance.

What are you guys favorite beaches in the summer for Staten Island?

Just curious because with the weather getting more warm, I was considering visiting Staten Island to get a tropical adventure.

Like what I am getting at is that I come from Brooklyn as I was looking for some advice on treasure hunting since I haven’t used my detector in so long that I was looking for a good place to start with again beaches in Staten Island.

What is going on with r/StatenIslandPulse?

So, r/StatenIslandPulse is a sub that belongs to the Staten Island Advance / SILive. They usually post five or six stories per day, but have posted nothing at all for 10+ days. And now they want members to "request to post" beforehand.

So I know that SI Advance catches alot of grief for some of what it puts up there, including for its increasingly out-of-touch editorial disposition. But it seems like they are just giving up, or at least laid off the intern who was posting its stories/monitoring the sub.

Anyone know the back story?

Update: According to SI Advance, it does not actually run r/StatenIslandPulse . My mistake. But it has been their outlet of choice on Reddit, so the local news outlet is not much represented here.

I'm a New Yorker that never posts about politics but Congress is about to vote on a Farm Bill that has a provision that would nullify most most state-level animal welfare protections. This would sentence many millions of farm animals to life imprisoned in cramped cages.

But luckily it's really quick and easy to help prevent this. I called the House switchboard at 202-224-3121, gave my zip code, they connected me to my rep's office. And it took one more minute to email my representatives through https://defeateats.com/take-action/

So I'm posting because I think a lot of people don't reach out to their reps because they assume it's complicated or they need to know everything about the bill. You don't. You can just say you're a constituent and you want them to vote no in under five mins.

Edit: I didn't expect so many positive response so I didn't mention you can find out more on this shared google doc if you're interested in doing more.

  • For example I hate phone calls as much as the average zoomer but it turns phone calls are weighted more heavily than emails by congressional offices, so this is the most impactful action with just a few mins.

Good physical therapy places?

I need a really good physical therapist for athletes. I played college football and have a spinal tear. I went to physical therapy at identity pt back in hs and went to fit club NYC — it was all one and one and the PTs were doctors. No shame but I went to jag one and like it genuinely just didn’t help. I had a place like that in college where everyone was nice and they mean well but after about 8 months of PT still had bad pain and couldn’t run or lift. I just need some good recs. Looking at redefine physical therapy and performance. With my new job I won’t have my time to make the trip to the old ones so looking for something that’s within driving distance of the island.

Is it safe at RUMC?

I just saw a TikTok about a nurse getting shot in a hospital parking lot in Alabama, and it made me think about RUMC.

I’ve considered working there before, but honestly the hospital and area have always felt a little unsafe to me, especially walking to my car once the sun went down. I also feel like the security isn’t the best.

Has anyone had any personal experiences with safety there? Am I overthinking it or is it actually a rough area/hospital?

Anyone know the School band at borough hall this afternoon

Hey all, was around borough hall about noon. A middle school? concert band was on the patio performing. Just writing this post to say you all were great. Saw nothing posted of the school performing, just wanted to shout you all out. Wondering if this is some borough hall series. Would love to support the arts, and more awareness if so.

Look for swimming pool for my retired dad

Hi everyone 🙏🏽 my parents recently moved to Staten Island (10312 / Eltingville area) to be closer to my husband and me. My dad is retired now and swimming has always been a huge part of his routine and health.

I’m trying to help him find a good swimming pool option nearby where he can just go regularly for lap swimming. He doesn’t care about gym equipment, classes, or fancy amenities. he genuinely just wants a clean, reliable place to swim a few times a week and stay active.

We had a pretty bad experience with LA Fitness nearby, so I’m hoping to find better alternatives. My mom doesn’t swim, so it would only be for him.

A lot of the fitness centers I’m finding seem really expensive or require full gym memberships/packages for things he’ll never use.

Does anyone have recommendations for affordable pools, community centers, YMCAs, JCCs, senior programs, or hidden gems on Staten Island (especially near 10312 / Eltingville area)?

Would really appreciate any advice from locals. Thank you! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Mom Passed Away. Questions About What To Do With Her Stuff

As the title states, my mother passed away last Thursday. She lived in a one bedroom apartment in Great Kills. Everything will need to be out by the end of the month. I'm not on the island anymore so unfortunately I can't just hop over there whenever I want to deal with this. I was looking to see if anyone has dealt with this and might have some tips or advice. There's not a ton of stuff and it's not the greatest but I'd hate to throw it out if someone else can get use out of them. I'm on my own dealing with this so it's going to be hard for me to lug the bigger items around. If I can't donate them I guess the next thing would be to throw it all out. If you have any ideas of how to deal with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Advice about a parking situation.

Scenario question:

I had just bought a new home, closed two weeks ago. I’ve Been doing renovation work there almost every day since. A neighbor that lives down the block leaves their old minivan (told by my new next door neighbor that this minivan Neigbor does this all the time) parked in front of my house taking up 2 spots and hasn’t moved it since… I’m not trying to be the new neighbor on the block who causes issues over parking, technically on a public street, but me and my family have 3 cars. I’m also going to have contractors coming in with trucks to do work which would def be a lot easier if they could park in front of the house their working in with the big trucks. 2 of my cars can fit in driveway, and I would like to think that the spot in front of my house or close to it… what should I do to keep things respectful when clearly this person parking their minivan for weeks at a time in front of peoples houses, does not hold the same neighborly respect?

Any advice please =)
