iOS 26 helped end my System Data nightmare: 61 GB recovered, no factory reset
System Data was eating a huge chunk of my 128 GB iPhone, and I was stuck on an older iOS version because I couldn't free enough space to update. My storage screen showed 105.59 GB used, even after I'd already removed a bunch of apps.
I went down the Reddit rabbit hole and tried the suggestions, starting with the easiest:
• The 4K camera trick: didn't work for me.
• Moving the date/time forward: helped clear a few GB.
• Aggressively deleting apps: combined with the above, I eventually got to roughly 28 GB free—enough to attempt the update.
A factory reset was the big remaining option, but I really wanted to avoid the hassle of wiping and restoring everything.
I was worried that installing iOS 26 would eat up the space I'd just clawed back and leave me unable to reinstall my apps. The upgrade took about 30–45 minutes.
Then I checked storage again: 44.37 GB used out of 128 GB. That's 83.63 GB free! The enormous System Data section had shrunk dramatically.
Across the cleanup and upgrade, total used storage dropped by 61.22 GB. I can't separate exactly how much each step freed, but the jump after updating was a huge surprise.
I'm so relieved I avoided a factory reset. Sharing my experience in case anyone else is stuck in the same 'not enough space to update' loop.
