‘I Gotta Go Julia, We Got Cows’: Why Twister Will Live Forever

Is Twister Oklahoma's greatest cultural export? I think there's a pretty strong case for it.

From Dusk Till Dawn 1996

From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) is a cult classic film directed by Robert Rodriguez and written by Quentin Tarantino, known for its genre-bending mix of crime thriller and horror. It follows the Gecko brothers (George Clooney and Tarantino), two bank robbers who take a family hostage to escape to Mexico, only to find their refuge, a strip club called the Titty Twister, is a haven for vampires, forcing them to fight for survival until dawn. The movie is famous for its sharp dialogue, unexpected tonal shift, and iconic performances, particularly Salma Hayek's.

What were the best 90s match ups in your opinion?

We really got spoiled by these action match ups in the 90s!

From upper left to right:

Pacino vs De Niro -

Van Damme vs Lundgren -

Jackson vs Spacey -

Cage vs Travolta -

Stallone vs Snipes -

Travolta vs Slater -

Heat and The Negotiator are favorites of mine, there are so many good ones though.

Why aren't there any of these made anymore? Where are the action stars?

What are your favorites and am I missing some?

Faye Wong/Dreams - Chungking Express (1994)

My favourite Wong Kar-wai movie.

"California Dreamin'" by The Mamas & the Papas plays throughout the film but Faye singing a beautiful Cantonese cover of The Cranberries' "Dreams" is the highlight for me.

Judge Dredd (1995) - Is it a better film if you've never read the comics or seen the character before?

I remember this being panned at the time, and being a fan of the comics it was based on I certainly had my issues with it as well, but friends who'd never read the comics before said they thought it was fun.

There are things I can objectively point to and appreciate; the production values were certainly there, the world-building was great, it had a good cast etc, but then Dredd taking his helmet off early on in the film just started to highlight how different this version of the character/story was and it moved away from being any kind of faithful adaptation and became much more of a generic and sanitized 90s sci-fi/action vehicle for Stallone.

I can't answer this objectively as my bias is built in, but for Dredd "virgins", taking away the baggage of comparing it to the source material, was the underlaying film good?

John Singleton’s death in 2019 at age 51 really hurt me. I saw Boys In The Hood when it was first released in 1991 and I quickly became a fan. I watched all his movies and loved them all. Higher Learning was quite emotional and powerful as well. Which John Singleton movies did you like best?

Wag the Dog (1997) How to Invent a War to Hide a Scandal in the White House. The movie is a satire that contains just enough realistic ballast to be plausible; like Dr. Strangelove. Smart, well-acted, and uncomfortably prescient political satire from director Barry Levinson and an all-star cast

Saw this movie several years back, and it’s a personal favorite of mine to this day. It’s a lighthearted and relaxing watch, and pretty funny as well. Loren Dean does a fantastic job playing the lead, shame he didn’t get the praise he deserved when it came to marketing it. If you haven’t seen it I highly recommend it! The promotional material is very spoilery though, so tread carefully

Anaconda (1997) - Was the cast better than the movie?

Kari Wuhrer and Owen Wilson pictured, but there was also Jon Voight, Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Eric Stoltz, and Danny Trejo.

There were quite a few "creature features" in the 90s, and a lot of them were very good movies. Anaconda seems to hold a more mixed reputation. Should it have been better? Or do the cast elevate it to sit alongside the likes of TREMORS?
