What was the deal with 70s movies dealing with esp, psychic, telekinetic and paranormal phenomena?

e.g. Carrie, The Fury, the Medusa Touch, and the Eyes of Laura Mars? Was it just the fad of the time like New Age religions or the social and cultural revolutions happening in America at the time? Was it just Hollywood trying new things and being experimental or did they get a sense that the public might be interested in them?

[TOMT] [Television] Black and White Anthology episode about a woman coming in to an audition.

The episode is about a woman who comes into an audition I believe for a television series or possibly movie the cast and crew turn into zombies or ghouls, and then she's chased by ghouls and at the end of the episode she disappears.

Firehead (1991) | Action Sci-Fi Military Cyborg-Superhero Bonanza

There are differing descriptions of a cyborg or "mutant". But he is a person with pyrokinetic abilities. And that's rare for paranormal/psychic movies.

Top Kids (1987)

TV Movie; VHS.

I discovered this when I was scrolling through Crud Buddies. It had a certain kind of low rent Goonies quality to it.
