All American Girl (1994-1995)

I wasn’t even born when this came out, but I ended up watching the whole thing on YouTube one day… and listen. This show is funny as hell. Margaret Cho had me cracking up for real.

What gets me is how nobody talks about it, even though it was literally the first network sitcom centered on an Asian American family. Like… that’s history. ABC really put a Korean‑American family on primetime in 1994, and somehow it just disappeared from the conversation.

The show follows Margaret Kim, who’s just trying to live her American life — date who she wants, be grown, mind her business — while her traditional family is like, “Absolutely not.” It’s culture clashes, family drama, and that classic ‘90s sitcom energy, but from a perspective TV had never centered before.

Was it perfect? Nah.
Did the network do too much? Absolutely.
But it was funny, it was bold, and it deserved better than being forgotten.

Anybody else remember this? Or did you also discover it way later like me?

Teech (1991)

Started streaming this show today. This show is obscure because,

  1. It only had 13 episodes produced.
  2. Outside of the episodes themselves, there is nothing more about it on YouTube.
  3. I have never heard about this show until recently.

This show is about a music teacher named Teech who comes from a lower-class school who gets a job at a prestigious all male college. "Teech me everything you know."

Remember when shows taught life lessons and morals and was still entertaining and made you laugh?

Berrenger’s (1985)

NBC rolled out the big guns for Berrenger’s, as the network made one final attempt to jump on the 80’s primetime soap bandwagon. Produced by Lorimar (the company behind Dallas, Knots Landing and Falcon Crest) Berrenger’s shared a number of behind the scenes staff with the aforementioned shows (Dallas creator David Jacobs was a producer).

Set in the titular New York department store, the show followed the intertwined lives of the super wealthy Berrenger dynasty and their various staff and business rivals. Taxi’s Jeff Conaway and future Dr. Quinn star Jonelle Allen were among the more notable names in the cast.

Despite the show’s high calibre production team, the show flopped and was taken off the air after 12 episodes (David Jacob’s later described it as a “fiasco”). Too many characters and a Saturday night timeslot didn’t help the show’s cause, in addition to the ongoing decline in interest in new primetime soaps in general.

October Road (2007 - 2008)

I watched episodes of the show, and the show wasn't bad. I know Bryan Greenberg from One Tree Hill, Laura Prepon from That '70s Show and Orange Is the New Black, Penny Johnson Jerald from Castle, and Sean Gunn from Gilmore Girls. I know they did a wrap-up episode to finish the show, which is great because the finale episode ended on a cliff-hanger, and they destroyed one couple's relationship. Did you watch the show?

Amen (1986 - 1991)

I could only find some episodes to watch. I wish all the episodes were available to watch because it's a good show, and the acting is good, and the dynamics between the characters are good as well. I'm only familiar with Sherman Hemsley and Anna Maria Horsford from other projects. I haven't seen the rest of the cast in any other shows except this one. Did you watch the show?

A Different World (1987 - 1993)

I rewatched some of the episodes, and the show still holds up. I think the show is one of the spin-offs that has actually turned out good, and is iconic. I know Lisa Bonet was the lead and left the show, and that's when the show got better. I think Boyz 2 Men's version is better too. I have nothing against Aretha Franklin, but I just think their version is more memorable and fits the theme of the show. Did you remember watching the show?
