r/MovieSuggestions

I just watched Heat, Thief, & Collateral for the first time in a back-to-back marathon. I need more movies like this, please!

Fucking hell. What an experience. I cannot believe that I've never seen these beautiful works of art. Mann is a true master of filming cityscapes at night. I was enthralled the entire time & couldn't take my eyes from the screen.

The score for Thief in particular was mesmerizing. The visceral sound of Heat was unlike anything I've experienced. I watched it with surround sound & those gunshots felt like they were going off right next to me. And I'm still not over the ending of Collateral, Cruise gave one of his best performances.

I definitely need more movie suggestions that fit this vibe. If anyone has anything that hits these notes, please let me know! Thanks for any replies. 🫡

What movies have the best fall/spooky vibe?

Looking for movies that feel like fall or October—Halloween atmosphere, chilly weather, changing leaves, small towns, haunted houses, supernatural elements, cozy-but-creepy vibes, etc. They don’t necessarily have to be straight-up horror.

R-rated movies are definitely preferred, but I’m open to anything. What movies would you put on the ultimate fall/spooky watchlist?

Romance movies with a good "running for the train" moment?

I mean this more in the thematic sense than the literal one: where their lover has already made their choice to leave and it's a last-minute dash for them to get there in time to stop them. For a seemingly cliche trope I'm struggling to think of any really impactful instances. The best I can think of rn is 𝘞𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘠𝘰𝘶 and that one 𝘍𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴 episode

Movies featuring cultural traditions

I’m doing the September scavenger hunt on Letterboxd, and one of the prompts is “Watch a film that features cultural traditions.”

All the movies I can think of I’ve already seen (Coco, Prey, Sinners, The Gods Must Be Crazy, etc), so any suggestions you have are welcome.

I’m also doing a horror challenge, so horror is preferred (but absolutely not required).

Edit:

Thank you all for your suggestions! I’m checking them all out to see what’s available here.

More films that I’ve already seen:

Drag Me To Hell
Midsommar
The Wicker Man
Your Name

Requesting: happy Anne Hathaway movies

Fairly recently I've seen three movies of hers (The Odyssey, Interstellar, and Les Mis) and she's great in all of them, but her characters in all three are completely miserable lol

Is there anything more light-hearted or comedic where she plays a substantial or lead role?

Movies where the protagonist proves everyone wrong

Something like a CEO of a company is pretending to be a janitor and everyone treats him like shit. Or people laugh at a fighter thinking he is a bum. Basically a movie where everyone underestimates the protagonist and he shows his true power.

Any movies with a similar vibe to “Stand by me”?

I really like the outside “older” vibe of the movie Stand by me and was wondering if there were any movies with a similar vibe.

Any juicy supernatural horror with jump scares, solid special effects and stuff?

I was somewhat in the mood for watching Poltergeist, but not THAT, because I already watched it. But something in that vein, kinda over-the-top, but also spooky.

What movie to see in IMAX?

I love this community. This is why I'm asking for all your opinions, please 😊

I won a free Regal IMAX movie for 2026, and we're in August already. I haven't used it yet because IMAX is about an hour away from me.

What movie would \*\*YOU\*\* choose to see in IMAX, going forward? It can be \*\*any movie\*\* you want. I'm just looking for suggestions what movie would be best.

I don't know anything about IMAX, so I don't know what movie I should see in IMAX.

Thank you so much!!

Movies that heavily reference other movies, total pastiche

By reference I don't mean Deadpool style pop culture references in dialogue. More like Kill Bill, which you could probably reconstruct from thirty other films shot for shot.

Modern movies exploring estranged siblings and complicated family dynamics (Golden child brother vs. black sheep sister)?

Hey everyone, I’m looking for some movies recommendations that feature a very specific kind of family and friendship dynamic.

Basically, I want something centered around an older sister and a younger brother who are estranged, but not in a dramatic kind of way. They just genuinely don't care about each other. The brother is the analytical, calculating type who stayed in their hometown and is definitely the mom's spoiled golden child. The sister (preferably the main character) got out of town as soon as she could because she felt completely suffocated by them.

I’m looking for a protagonist who is deeply lonely but fiercely independent because she’s never had anyone to rely on but herself. I really want a film that explores how the parents treat them differently, like the contrast in the mother/daughter, father/daughter, and parents/son dynamics, and how that unequal upbringing shaped who they became.

Bonus points: If there is a subplot involving a fading female friendship. I'd love to see a dynamic where the main character is envious of a childhood best friend who has the "perfect" opposite life (good family, put-together, etc.). They are drifting apart because the friend just doesn't get her struggles, and there’s a quiet, mutual feeling of resentment or being wronged by the other.

Any genre works (drama, thriller, etc.) but prefer dark comedy, no feel-good movies. I know it's pretty specific so really, anything that comes close is good.

(Already seen lady bird and was not a fan of it, liked the edge of seventeen, This Is Where I Leave You, Frances Ha)

Thanks!

The Red Shoes (1948)

If you want to see something that feels truly cinematic, and utilizes incredible editing, filming, production design, music, and dance, you simply must watch this British classic about a ballet company adapting the Hans Christian Andersen tale of the same name.

Not only does this movie feel modern, despite being 80 years old, but the technicolor film processing makes all the colors look absolutely amazing. The ballet sequences use film techniques to transform dancers and sets into something that’s only suggested at by a live dance performance. Furthermore, while many big, song-and-dance movies from Hollywood’s golden era are extremely romantic and optimistic, this movie has a darker side, exploring pursuit of art at all costs, jealousy, and self doubt.

It’s a fantastic film!

Alien franchise fan

I’ve recently rewatched everything including Alien Earth and the cross overs with predator (meh). I’m looking for some amazing alien movies, but only ones that show the aliens, as a monster movie fan I can’t stand when they hide the monster

The Three Musketeers

The idea of the three musketeers is very intriguing. I never watched any film with them in it except the Disney Donald, Mickey, and Goofy one. If I were to choose a musketeer movie, which movie would you recommend me watch?

Non-English Surreal Films (With easily accessible English subtitles)

I'm looking for NON-ENGLISH films, I've got quite a lot of English films on my plate and I feel like I want more outside of that sphere. And I like surrealism.

Non-English Surrealist films that I have seen are

- Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders

- Paprika (2006)

But for some more, I guess, English Surrealist films that I have seen are

- Being John Malkovich

- David Lynch Goodness (Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead, etc.)

- Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas

And just incase, films that are on my list but I haven't seen yet. (Both Eng & Non-Eng)

- Birds, Orphans and Fools

- The Bed Sitting Room

- Pi (1998)

I also quite like Surrealism mixed with Crime, not a requirement, but I do quite enjoy my crime media. Either detectives or criminals.
