Why the recent fixation on something traumatic in the protagonists past?

I say "recent" pretty broadly, like in the last ten or twenty years or so. I've noticed is that a lot of horror/thriller defaults to being centered around some sort of traumatic event in the protagonist past, an event consistently hinted at throughout and finally shown in flashback. The first time I remember seeing it was in Peter Jacksons BRAINDEAD (1992) but back then, it wasn't as overused. On the other hand, there were also Gremlins (1984) which played it for laugh, suggesting that it was a bit old back them.

Personally I'm a bit tired of the trope. What is the appeal? Why did it gain such popularity?

Any juicy supernatural horror with jump scares, solid special effects and stuff?

I was somewhat in the mood for watching Poltergeist, but not THAT, because I already watched it. But something in that vein, kinda over-the-top, but also spooky.

Which films should be seen in the cinema (or in VR)?

I honestly can't remember the last time I was in a physical cinema. Oh, wait, it was that Elvis flick, so 2022. But I watch a lot of movies in VR and it gives sort of the same experience. There is that sense of massive scale, and there is something special about watching it in a (virtual) cinema, rather than in front of my PC at home. There are no other cinemagoers, of course, which can be a good or a bad thing.

Which made me wonder, which kind of films benefits from the big screen?

Without an audience to share the fun with, as is the case with VR, most stupid comedies doesn't really benefit; sitting alone in that grand theater sort of makes it a bit weird. Horror, or more grand and epic experiences, works far better. Wide shots really get the right sense of scale.

THE BATMAN (2022) had an epic gritty feel in VR, even if dark muddy tones doesn't do well in the medium.

BACKROOMS (2026) didn't really felt like it was made for the cinema, somehow, but it is hard to put my finger on it. Some films seem to be intended for cinema, others less so.

Why does a negative perspective feel more truthful?

I'm not always negative. But when I am, it always feels more like, this is the real deal. Positivity, on the other hand, feels more like a shiny surface. A distraction.

Is this a basic foundation in the human condition? Or do others see their life differently? Can it be changed?

Both cognitive therapy and meta-cognitive therapy seem to miss the mark.

As I understand things, cognitive theraphy says that whatever bothers us is simply us looking at it wrongly. It build this argument by using fictive patients without any kind of real-life problems as examples.

Meta-cognitive therapy, on the other hand, say that YES, people actually have actual problems. But in doing so, it ignores any way we might look at things wrongly.

I get the impression that most psychological ideas aren't building on the foundation of others, but instead tries to come up with their own grand concept which is supposed to be wastly superior to whatever the other guys come up with.

Indian adaptations of Danish comedies

I recently noticed that the Danish SORTE KUGLER (2009) had been adapted into the Indian THANK GOD (2022). It had been a good while since I watched it, so I made it a double feature.

SORTE KUGLER is a sort of modern take on A CHRISTMAS CAROL. A thoroughly unpleasant real estate agent is involved in a car crash and ends up in an heavenly game show, where he must demonstrate that he can behave like a decent human being, or else. So it's the classic formula of enjoying the antics of a problematic character followed by some sort of moralistic wrap-up to justify it. Only, this one seems a bit more raw, a bit more honest, a little like it actually mean it.

Anders Matthesen, who wrote, directed, and played the lead in SORTE KUGLER, is an edgy and provocative comedian, but what sets him apart from other edgy and provocative comedians is his humane honesty. It's provocative, sure, but not just that. When he aim to portray an unpleasant real estate agent, the result is a powerhouse of bitterness and bile. THANK GOD, by contrast, goes for less distasteful character, played by one Sidharth Malhotra who I assume had to be shown as a fundamentally charming dude. Which sort of grinds against him supposedly being a bad person with an redemption arc.

While THANK GOD talks about karma and mention the English truism "what comes around goes around" (The english title of SORTE KUGLER just happens to be WHAT GOES AROUND), even with this focus, it chickens out of the ending of the Danish version. But that's not too bad. It is, after all, another movie. Even if THANK GOD basically follow the same story, it has been given the full Bollywood treatment with lavish music numbers and over-the-top sugarcoated feel-good energy, and admittedly much grander production value. Where the game show is kept in green-toned white in SORTE KUGLER, the one in THANK GOD is a lush grandiouse CGI setpiece.

Rewatching SORTE KUGLER right after THANK GOD felt like being thrown straight into cold water. That house sale opening really sets the scene, while also getting the exposition out of the way.

SORTE KUGLER is the better film. Snappier, more focused. But I found THANK GOD to be an enjoyable ride on its own, if one can tolerate the low-stake blatant feel-good overload. It was fun to see how the same story is being delivered in India versus Denmark. Especially since the adaptation follow its source pretty closely. The game show trials the protagonist are subjected to are kept relatively intact in the remake. While the lust trial obviously is just an excuse for a grand musical number (and I'll go on record and say I aprove!) there were also some depth. I really liked the repeated-joke lesson.

Both movies does well on the music front, with THANK GOD bombastic score contrasting wildly with the more somber tone of the Danish one. SORTE KUGLER features 8 Danish songs, among them "Kom Igen" by Kim Larsen, the eighties hit "Video Video" (the only upbeat of the bunch) and "Hun Er Fri" by Tue West, a musician frequently mentioned in the movie.

Sub to talk about metaphors or general language science

r/linguistics don't have discussions, only articles.

r/etymology is specifically about word origins.

Are there any others?

Anyone know how to make a paintable 3D wall?

One way would be to just smack lotsa decals on the wall! Easy! But I want something more refined.

As I understand things, Images have editable data, whereas Textures can't be edited, but can be put on meshes.

So I need to calculate the right spot for each brush dap (position from the walls upper left) add a brush dap to that cordinate of my Image, and then convert the Image to a Texture which I then push to the mesh?

Or is there another way?

I guess I could also let it be a 2D scene, shown as a wall.

What is the down-to-earth alternative to aliens breaking reality to mess with you?

Sometimes, life seem to have sort of white areas. Places where the stories we tell ourselves just doesn't compute. For instance, I ate a lot of baked beans and chili beans in my youth. But I have no idea why I started doing that. My parents never touched the stuff. So why?

I had the same with NemID, which once was how you identified yourself here in Denmark. Basically, you had a laminated sheet of codes, which you had to tell. What bothered me was that I had no idea how I was supposed to keep tracks of which codes were used or not. I don't recall striking out used codes.

But in this case, there's a logical explanation. Turns out you were given a 4 ciffer code, and then you had to reply with the 6 ciffered code matching that. No big mystery. Just my memory playing tricks.

How to stop NordVPN from locking files with punctation in the filename?

My guess is that this is a safety feature in response to Microsoft Windows harebrained decision to hide file extentions from the users. But I have "show file extention" turned on and don't need any protection here.

I want my files back, and the feature turned off. but I can only chose "remove from history" for each file. Anything I can do?

Any experiences with realies within realities?

I just saw a movie in VR, and when it ended I quit out of it, and was back in Skybox. Then I took off my HMD and was back in reality. It sort of got to me, this feeling of first returning to a higher VR world. Are there any experiences or games build around that? I recall that thing in superHOT, although it's more like a gimmick. There is also Zaccaria Pinball, where there the pinball table is placed in a fake scenery inside a studio, giving sort of an illusion within the illusion.

Movie with a trickster villian in the vein of Beetlejuice, but more sinister

It is NOT A Nightmare on Elm Street, although that one sort of fits the trickster archetype too. It was essentially elaborate jokes with deadly punchlines.

The AI prompters anti-art stance is driven by venomous envy

And I don't say that lightly. I think there is a bitterness at their core which cause them to want art eradicated, purely to spite artists.

I had so far thought that what I'd seen was just vanilla internet drama. The AI prompters reacting to anti-AI stance by taking an anti-art stance. But I think it cuts deeper.

I got this feeling when I saw this, now locked, post. While the post is very teen, and from her perspective, obviously, it is still the first anti-art stance I've seen outside the online realm.

Where do I find the deepest, most philosophical takes?

I had a youtuber I quite liked, but after she did a whiny post about how people being genocided was so so horrible, for her, and why she couldn't possibly take a stand against genocide, I kind of moved on. But I haven't found any other youtubers which put my brain through the wringer in quite the same way.

Innuendo Studios was great. I liked how he was able to criticize the left without going centrist. but he left the scene, sadly.

In my youth, I used to draw like all the time. But I slowly fell out of it, to the degree that it is now a skill I must rediscover. I'm old, and learning is hard.

Can I delete .godot/imported/

I still haven't gotten into Git, so I secure against screwing up my projects by crudely copypasting my entire project with a new version number.

Yes, I should get into Git. But I wonder if I can relatively safely delete those really heavy folders?

Anyone know what might be causing this? I tried turning off my VPN, but it still happen. For some reason, opening Firefox in a private window fixes it, but this is a bit of a bother, requiring phone verification.
