Moving to Atlanta from Europe soon — anxious about safety + looking for advice on best areas to live

Hey everyone! My husband and I are moving to Atlanta in a couple of months for his job in Midtown, and we’ve never been before.

I’m honestly pretty anxious about safety because most of what you hear about Atlanta online/the news can sound intimidating, so I’d really appreciate some honest local opinions. We’re from Europe so safety is not something we often worry about, hence why I’m so anxious about it.

We’re mainly looking for:
- Areas that generally feel the safest and most comfortable day-to-day
- What the daily commute into Midtown is realistically like

We’ve been looking at places like Buckhead, Brookhaven, Sandy Springs.

Also — even if some of those areas are “safer,” is it still worth living closer to Midtown because of traffic? For people who live/work there, does Midtown itself feel relatively safe day-to-day?

Would really appreciate any advice from locals. If you have any apartment recs we would appreciate it also (flexible budget). Thanks!!

EDIT: To clarify, we are a couple in our 20’s, so we only need a 1 bedroom. Max budget is 2000$. I have autism so I tend to prefer the quiet, we don’t go out at night a lot, we much prefer a outside day-time activity like a walk, gardens, zoo, things like that. My husband will be working 3 days a week in office. Thank you everyone for your responses!!

Home buying in Cobb/Cherokee county GA

HI, I’m a 25 and single and want to purchase a home. I’m curious to know if that’s even possible to do alone in Cobb county, I make about 60k a year. I have decent credit in the range of 680-720. If you were in a similar situation and were able to purchase a home. How much were you able to get a loan for approx.? How much did you put down? adid you have to pay closing cost?

TIA, a girl yearning for a place of her own :)

30M - Midtown or somewhere else?

Hey everyone! I’m 30M and planning a move to Atlanta later this year from NYC. I work remotely, so I have some flexibility on where to live, and I’m trying to figure out which neighborhood would be the best fit socially and lifestyle-wise.

I'm looking to live around other young professionals around my age and I also have an active lifestyle so looking for places close by where I can go on runs as well.

Right now I keep hearing about Midtown and Old Fourth Ward, but I’d love some honest opinions from people who actually live in the city. I also looked up Sandy Springs and Brookhaven since they are right outside the city but worried it might be too sleepy for me.

Budget is around $2k for a 1BR if that helps.

Would love to hear the pros/cons of different areas and where you’d recommend for someone in my situation!

How do I get rid of old furniture

I have some old couches in my apartment that I’m trying to replace with a new one but I don’t know how to get rid of the old couches. They are old and nasty and cannot be resold. I tried the Atlanta department of solid waste services but they said they cannot pick it up because it’s an apartment. They suggested CHaRM (center for hard to recycle materials) but from their website it dosent look like they take furniture. I called 1-800GOTJUNK and they can take it but I’d need to pay $300 and I’d rather not do that.
So yeah, any ideas on a cheaper way to get rid of these things?

Catalyst Midtown vs Paloma West Midtown?

Some friends and I are currently looking at getting a lease for about a year at their 4x4 options in both. We’ve been reading a lot of reviews for both places. For Catalyst, it seems like most of the negative reviews came during the construction period, and for Paloma, we saw that they’ve changed their name multiple times. Honestly, we were close to signing a lease with Paloma until we heard that.

From someone who has lived at either place, what are your thoughts? In terms of safety, is Paloma really worse? I know both places have had issues with car break-ins. Only one of us is planning to bring a car, so we’re also wondering how parking and overall security feel on a day-to-day basis.

Also, have either of the places had any noticeable pest problems like roaches or bugs?

What’s really happening in the Alpharetta real estate market right now?

I’m curious what everyone is seeing in Alpharetta right now because the market feels very different depending on the price point, neighborhood, and condition of the home.

From the latest market data, Alpharetta is not exactly “crashing,” but it is definitely more selective than it was a few years ago. Zillow shows Alpharetta had 368 homes for sale at the end of April 2026, with a median list price around $714,950 and homes going pending in about 38 days. Redfin’s March 2026 data showed a median sale price around $724K, down year over year, with homes taking about 43 days to sell. Movoto reported an April 2026 median sale price closer to $799K and about 41 days on market, so the exact numbers vary by source, but the trend is pretty clear: buyers have more choices, and overpriced homes are sitting longer.

What I’m noticing is that the best homes are still getting attention, especially if they are updated, well-located, and priced correctly. But buyers are being much pickier. They are comparing homes more carefully, watching interest rates, and pushing back on price when a home needs updates or feels overpriced.

For sellers, I think the biggest mistake right now is pricing based on what a neighbor got in 2021 or 2022. That market is gone. Today’s buyers are looking at value, condition, layout, schools, commute, and monthly payment all at once.

For buyers, this may actually be a better market than people realize. There is more inventory, less panic, and more room to negotiate on some homes. But the good ones still move, so waiting too long on the right property can still cost you.

My take: Alpharetta is still one of the stronger North Atlanta markets, but it is no longer a market where every listing sells instantly just because it is in Alpharetta. Strategy matters again.

What are you all seeing? Are homes in your neighborhood still moving quickly, or are you noticing more price reductions and longer days on market?

Aspire Lenox Park - Apartment to Avoid (Rat Infestion / Poor Cleanliness)

Putting this out there for anyone looking at Aspire Lenox Park in the Brookhaven area. I didn’t see too many bad reviews last year prior to moving in so I expected a well kept, renovated community. For the past several months there has been a rat infestation and various buildings have been left without reliable water/HVAC for days. Screenshots attached are from our community app for residents, I’ve blocked out names for privacy. It’s laughable that most units are being leased for $2000 and up and the bare minimum is not being done by the property management company to maintain cleanliness. AVOID if you can.

Moving in July, Need Advice

Hi everyone!

I will be moving to ATL for my job, which is on Peachtree. I want a luxury apartment close to my job, but I have had a hard time finding apartment locators who actually respond in a timely manner. I am studying for the bar, so visiting a bunch of apartments right now is not feasible.

Does anyone have any recommendations for apartment locators or great buildings in the downtown area for young professionals?

Free Help Thread

If anyone is moving to Atlanta soon and feels overwhelmed trying to figure out neighborhoods/apartments, feel free to ask questions here. I work in Atlanta real estate/apartment locating and tour properties across Midtown, Buckhead, O4W, West Midtown, Decatur, etc almost daily, so I’m happy to give honest opinions on buildings, pricing, commute considerations, walkability, etc.

Atlanta’s super block-by-block and a lot of apartment reviews online can be misleading, so sometimes it helps to hear from people actually in the market every day.

Happy to help however I can.

Looking to purchase a home in Georgia

Looking at areas like McDonough, Riverdale, Jonesboro, Locust Grove and Griffin. House I'm looking for is about 325k FHA, over 3000 square feet, 4+ bed, 2+bath. Any suggestions besides redfin, and Zillow? There's got to be more options then houses that are TLC or mold ridden. No manufactured homes, condo, etc. Only residential or multifamily.

Any suggestions please!

Thanks in advanced

More than 1,100 artists have signed an open letter calling for a boycott of next month’s Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, Austria, over the inclusion of Israel “despite its ongoing genocide in Gaza.”

The letter was produced by No Music For Genocide, which calls for a cultural boycott of Israel in line with the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement. Among the signatories are Brian Eno, Roger Waters, Macklemore, Hot Chip, Peter Gabriel, Paul Weller, Sigur Rós, Kneecap, Paloma Faith, and Massive Attack. Former Eurovision winners Emmelie de Forest and Charlie McGettigan have also signed.

Moving to Atlanta-recommendations

Greetings,

I accepted a good job opportunity in ATL, and though I have some experience with the city I have never lived here. I’m wondering if anyone has suggestions for where to live. I hear great things about VA-Highlands & Midtown for young adults, but wonder about safety. Wondering if you have any input, and apologize if this topic gets old.

Moving to apartment, upper 20s, single man. Love the outdoors & walking & the occasional pint at not-so-crowded places.

Appreciate any input. Take Care.

Edit; more info. Nurse working at Emory University Hospital. Plan to drive to work for convenience or walk/bike if close.

Any Advice for Moving to ATL with Limited Resources?

Hi! I’m 23F relocating to Atlanta by the end of August due to some abrupt changes in my living situation.

This will be my first time living on my own, so I don’t have rental history yet, and I’m currently in the process of building my credit (so it’s limited right now).
I’ll have about $3k saved when I move, so I’m trying to figure out realistic options with that budget.

I’m mainly looking for advice on:

- finding landlords or roommates willing to work with no rental history

- areas in/around Atlanta that are more affordable

- any tips for getting approved

I’m open to anything safe and reasonable, just trying to get on my feet. Any advice or resources would really help, thank you!

Advice on Condo Rental

Hi there. So after 12 years of renting our 1BR in a Buckhead high rise, our tenant is moving away and we are debating to rent again or sell. The condo market seems soft, so we are leaning towards renting.

Where do folks these days look for quality rentals from private landlords? Zillow? FB Marketplace? My days of posting on Craigslist are long behind. Hahah.

And is there a resource to test our proposed rental rate against what’s market for our area?

Thanks!
