Last-minute getaway ideas from Winnipeg?

Our plans for this weekend (Fri–Sun) are a little up in the air, and I’d love some recommendations!

We’re a small group of friends/family leaving from Winnipeg. We’re open to either staying 1–2 nights somewhere or just doing a really good day trip if accommodations are hard to find last minute.

Ideally looking for somewhere with a mix of:
-Beach/lake time
-BBQ/picnic
-Water activities or boat rentals
-Nice scenery / hidden gems
-Maybe a cruise
-A good hike for me - the rest of the group may or may not join :(

Somewhere that actually feels like a little getaway rather than just another day in the city.

I’ve been working extremely hard lately and really want to use this weekend to get out of Winnipeg, relax, have some fun, and enjoy summer before it disappears.

I was originally thinking Clear Lake/Riding Mountain, but I’m very open to Whiteshell, Falcon/West Hawk, Gimli/Hecla, Pinawa, Kenora, or somewhere I haven’t thought of. More votes in the group for Kenora!

If you had Fri–Sun free this weekend, where would you go? Would truly appreciate specific cabins/hotels, beaches, hikes, waterfalls, boat rentals, activities, or places to eat!

Have Winnipeg restauranteurs lost their minds?

This is just an example of the greed and I also guess the stupidity of people paying these prices. The Nathan's dog featured costs about $2.75 at a retail level nevermind wholesale. It's not even a question of whether or not you can afford it or not but value for money. I understand that prices have gone up all around the world but this is out of control and needs to stop.

Food off my crusty old BBQ has never tasted better.

Clear Lake weekend

I’m planning a little weekend getaway from Winnipeg with a friend this coming Friday and Saturday, and we’ll be heading back Sunday. We’re hoping to stay at a hotel, cabin, or Airbnb and have a relaxing but fun couple of days.
We’d love to spend some time at the beach, maybe BBQ, go hiking, take a cruise, and try some water activities like motorboat rentals. We don’t have a set itinerary yet, so we’d really appreciate any recommendations for places to stay, things to do, trails, waterfalls, beaches, activities, or hidden gems worth checking out.
I’ve been working extremely hard lately, so I really want this weekend to feel like a proper little getaway and a chance to relax, have fun, and treat myself and my friend.

Winnipeg municipal election: disability community consultation

I am working on a project to amplify the voices of Winnipeg’s disability community this election. Comment below with your thoughts about what our mayor and city council candidates should prioritize to make Winnipeg accessible.

To get things started, here is a list of topics we want to ask the candidates about. How has city hall measured up since the last election in these areas? What should candidates include in their campaigns to get your votes?

Affordable and accessible transportation options

Accessible sidewalks, crossings and public spaces

Accessibility of municipal facilities

Accessible recreation and community programming

Disability-inclusive emergency planning

Accessible communication and City information

Employment and economic inclusion

Consultation and meaningful participation of people with disabilities

Childcare Crisis

Hello,

Like so many other families, mine is struggling to find childcare. I'm on the wait lists and have been for years. Calling them doesn't generate more spaces. We had wonderful care that my children aged out of when they started kindergarten and now we cannot find anything that works to get them to and from their catchment school. Luckily we've been able to use Schools of Choice and make it work, but it really is a band-aid solution and won't work longterm. I've reached out to members of government to share my concerns, and received very diplomatic responses ("Thank you for your advocacy"). I'm going to take an alternative approach to my advocacy by posting on the internet. Here is a screenshot west Winnipeg from of the Manitoba Child Care Search showing daycares with school-age vacancies. There are two.

*note that the address listed for one of the two only options shown is actually in West St. Paul, and the other option doesn`t service my catchment school.

It seems to me like there needs to be some partnerships and communication among schools, the province, and daycare providers to help align day care spaces with projected enrolment. The data exists!

I am so frustrated and needed to rant, so thank you for providing a platform for my "advocacy."

Where to buy decent amount of chain link fencing

I'm building a decently sized chain link fence, and only need about 60 ft of fencing (just the chain link itself). Home Depot only sells them buy a roll of a few hundred feet, which is too much. Does anyone know where I can buy just a small qty of the fence and have it installed?
