Teens throwing stones in Vondelpark

Anyone else experienced male teens, guessing around 14/15 throwing sizable rocks at people from their bikes? it happened to us walking back from the cinema Friday.

We’ve also experienced them spitting on us and others the last couple years.

there seems to be a bit of a pattern of male violence in the park perpetrated by this age range.

(and before anyone makes the comment - they were seemingly white Dutch kids)

City of trash

I sometimes wonder if this is a secret campaign by city of Amsterdam to chase the tourists and locals away so they can lower the prices of housing (at least this seems to be easier, because real solutions would require effort).

I WFH most of the time but I go to the office once a week on different days. I get to Amsterdam around 7am and holy shit this city always looks like a trash-bomb exploded on every street and square (except Dam, that place is always clean).

Its big trash, small trash, trash stuffed behind things. If you stop for 5min anywhere in the center and start paying attention you will find (and smell) a lot of trash.

ps. I post this because I mostly feel bad for ppl living in Amsterdam, I cannot imagine paying taxes in this city so I get to see trash while commuting and clean city for the tourists to enjoy during the day. Many cities around the world clean in the night, Amsterdam thinks that starting at 7am is reasonable.

Looking to connect with other single dads in or around Amsterdam

Hi everyone,

I'm a 35-year-old dad of two kids (7 and 10). Since becoming a single dad, my kids are with me every other weekend, and I'm looking to meet other single dads in a similar situation.

The main reason is simple: I'd love to arrange playdates so the kids can make some new friends while we grab a coffee, head to a playground, visit the zoo or just spend a fun afternoon together. It would also be nice to get to know a few dads who understand co-parenting and hopefully build some genuine friendships.

I live in Amsterdam Zuid. My kids live with their mum just outside Amsterdam and go to school there, so they don’t have a social circle in Amsterdam yet. I do but all my friends don’t have kids. My kids mainly speak Dutch (my daughter knows some basic English), so it would be great if they could easily connect with other kids.

When the kids aren't with me, I enjoy CrossFit, running, watching football, trying good restaurants and grabbing a beer.

If this sounds like something you'd be up for, send me a DM. If there's enough interest, maybe we can start a WhatsApp group and organise a first meetup.

Cheers!

The whole Stadionbuurt closed off

I get there's a festival, but why do they have to close off a perimeter of 1km around it?
It's just plain stupid. Can access my office and can't get to my house.

Opinion on sportheldenbuurt

Hello, we are considering living in sportheldenbuurt for 1-2 years. Can anyone share whether this is a nice neighbourhood? Are there proper amenities (supermarkets, small shops, market, coffee places) around? And how is the connection with the rest of the city?

Canada <-> Netherlands

Hi everyone

I'm based nearby Amsterdam (South) and since I've been moving in Holland I really miss one specific brand of maple-based cigs called " Matinée Subtle ".

Just a single pack would make my day !

If by any chance someone is headed to the Netherlands this summer, I'd be glad to treat you for a lunch, a coffee, share some tips with you or find a fair way to make it worth your time and friendliness.ND

One Star Reviews For Establishments That Refuse To Serve You Tap Water

Inspired by the recent post I saw on here about leaving one star reviews for places that show a tipping option when paying by card.

I do the same but for places that flat out refuse to serve you tap water. We went to a pizza restaurant recently and ordered a few pizzas and beers and wine. Like having water with my meal for digestion and to keep hydrated whilst drinking alcohol. Refused to serve tap water and came up with some feeble excuse. The food was good, but wouldn't return because of this. I left a review on Google maps and the owner went off on a big rant.

It is well known nowadays for the detrimental effects of bottled water and tap water is perfectly fine and drinkable in Amsterdam, it is about time it became mandatory to serve it like is the case in other countries. Is this a pet peeve of anyone else.

What is wrong is Amsterdam ZuidOost?

Pretty much the same view every day for the last 5 years or so: municipality cannot fix the bin, people cannot put their rubbish into bin (making birds happy), residents have parties and in the public yard but dont bother to clean, dumping the rubbish onto kids playground…
been around but have never seen such mess

Looking for house cleaner

I’m looking for someone who can clean bi-weekly, around 60 euro for 3 hours in Amsterdam zuidoost (female). Does anyone know where I can find someone? When I look it up online I only see professional cleaners who charge way too much. I need someone who can mop floors, clean the kitchen and bathroom, etc. (not all in one day of course)

Landsmeer insights

Hi everyone,

My husband and I are considering putting an offer on a house in Landsmeer, and we'd love to hear from people who live there or have lived there.

A few things we're curious about:

- How do you like living there overall? What is the best part about living there?

- Does it feel too quiet or isolated, or is it a good balance with Amsterdam being nearby?

- How's the community? Is it easy to meet people, especially as expats or young families?

- Are there enough shops, restaurants, cafes, and other everyday amenities, or do you find yourself going into Amsterdam a lot?

- How reliable is public transport, especially in the evenings and on weekends?

- Is it a good place for raising children?

- Any issues with flooding or water management that locals think about?

- Are there any downsides you wish you'd known before moving?

We're currently deciding between Landsmeer and Amsterdam Noord, so any honest experiences, both positive and negative, would be really helpful!

Getting harassed by kids

I live in Noord and had a really bizarre experience this week. My girlfriend and I (both adults) were out for a run when, completely out of nowhere, two kids, maybe around 10 years old, started harassing us.

It started with them riding on a fat bike right behind us, making weird noises, shouting at us, and generally trying to get a reaction. I told my girlfriend to just ignore them and keep running because I figured that's what they wanted.

They kept it up for more than 5 minutes. They only backed off briefly when someone else noticed what was happening. Then I looked over my shoulder to see if they were finally gone, and I heard one of them shout, "He looked backwards, go brake check them!" They immediately rode in front of us and started cutting us off.

Just to be clear, we hadn't said a single word to them at this point.

Since it didn't seem like they were going to stop, the only thing I said was, "Please be nice." That somehow triggered a whole rant about how we weren't responding because they were Moroccans, followed by something about Geert Wilders. After almost 10 minutes of this, they finally rode off.

I'm honestly wondering what you're even supposed to do in a situation like this. If you react, that's exactly what they're looking for. I'm obviously not going to get physical with kids, and yelling back doesn't seem like it would help either. If anything, I worry they'd just call more friends, and then we'd have to deal with that every time we go running in the neighborhood.

Did we handle this the right way by ignoring them? Or is there something else you would do if this happens again?

Indian food conspiracy theory

Hey all,

I while back someone mentioned something in a thread about the best indian food spots in Amsterdam that caught my attention. The person basically said something in the line of all Indian restaurants just being fronts, and the food is actually made in one place and then being distributed to all the "restaurants".

We order indian take out maybe once per month and have done so for many years. We like it BUT it actually does taste exactly the same regardless of where you order it from. We switch restaurant pretty much every time and it never fails. It is the same food. None of them seem to deviate even a little from the ingredients. I've tried suggestions from Reddit and other places. Always the same.

Is there any truth to this claim or is it simply a coincidence most dishes taste the same wherever you go? Surely there must be places that are making their own food, with their own chefs .. with their own versions of dishes? Curious to hear your thoughts.
